Some people are lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they have just visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later.
I am one of those unfortunate people who have a very poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time but I still manage to get lost on my way there.
When I was young I was so shy that I never dared to ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hoped that by some chance I would get to the spot I was heading for.
I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive replies that puzzle me.Often people do not like to admit that they do not know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their hometown very well, will give you a long list of directions which you cannot possibly hope to remember; and still others do not seem to be able to tell between their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction to that in which you should be going.
If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I always tell him/her that I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid giving him/her wrong directions, but even this can have embarrassing results.
Once I was on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct him to the Sunlight Building.I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building. However, at this point, I decided it was too late to turn back and search him out of the crowd behind me, as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting.
Imagine my embarrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for directions to my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked.
24、The author seems to be very frustrated(沮丧的)by the fact that________.
A、he is poor at giving directions
B、he is too shy to ask for directions to improve his sense of direction
C、he is jealous(嫉妒的) of those who have excellent sense of direction
D、he is not born with an adequate sense of direction
25、The author prefers not to ask the way now because________.
A、he knows many people are just like him
B、he has been used to getting lost
C、he finds it hard to trust strangers
D、few people can give effective instructions
26、An example is given to show the author’s ________.
A、embarrassing encounter(遇见) B、successful escape
C、poor sense of direction D、stupid response
27、The tone of the story is________.
A、helpless B、proud
C、anxious D、humorous

American writer Toni Morrison was born in Ohio in 1931. She was raised in an African American family filled with songs and stories of Southern myths, which later shaped her prose(散文). Her happy family life led to her excellent performance in school, although there was an atmosphere of racial discrimination(种族歧视) in the society.
After graduating from college, Morrison started to work as a teacher and got married in 1958. Several years later, her marriage began to fail. For a short term escape, she joined a small writers' group, in which each member was required to bring a story or poem for discussion. She wrote a story based on the life of a girl she knew in childhood who had prayed to God for blue eyes. The story was well received by the group, but then she put it away, thinking she was done with it.
In 1964, Morrison ended her marriage and devoted herself to writing. One day, she dusted off the story she had written for the writers' group and decided to make it into a novel. She drew on her memories from childhood and expanded upon them using her imagination so that the characters developed a life of their own. The Bluest Eye was eventually published in 1970.
From 1970 to 1992, Morrison published five more novels. In her novels, Morrison brings in different elements (要素) of the African American past, their struggles, problems and cultural memory. In Song of Solomon, for example, Morrison tells the story of an African American man and his search for identity in his culture. The novels and other works won her several prizes. Self driving cars (无人驾驶汽车)might make your future travel a lot more pleasant, but they won’t reduce(缓解) traffic.
Car producers have mentioned that traffic reduction is one of the many advantages of having self driving cars on the road. The idea is that self driving cars will reduce accidents caused by human mistakes. But experts say self driving cars’ influence on traffic will probably be bad.
Lew Fulton, a co director at UC Davis’ Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), said that self driving cars won’t fix traffic problems unless a pricing system is put in place that discourages self driving cars. For example, many companies are interested in programming self driving cars to do something, which could increase traffic on the road, Fulton said.
Massachusetts lawmakers have already suggested introducing a tax on driverless cars.It calls for at least $0.025 per mile.
Traffic jams could also worsen as companies like Lucid Motors try to produce self driving cars with reclining seats (可躺座椅).People may choose to live farther outside of cities if they can travel in cars that allow them to sleep and relax. But that increases the number of people travelling in and out of cities during rush hour, Fulton said.
Without the cost of a driver, Fulton said he worries self driving Ubers or Lyfts will become so cheap that it will be hard to push people to choose car sharing services like uberPOOL.“I think it’s going to take some kind of pricing system that discourages cars without a single passenger,”he said.
Some cities have already started programmes that discourage people from taking car trips alone. For example, Chicago and New York City have set up lanes (车道) that single passenger cars must pay some money to use. That money increases during rush hour.
32、What do car producers think of self driving cars
A、They are safer.
B、They are faster.
C、They save buyers’ money.
D、They increase traffic slightly.
33、What do Massachusetts lawmakers suggest
A、Introducing a tax on car producers.
B、Increasing the selling price of self driving cars.
C、Pushing up the running costs of self driving cars.
D、Calling for drivers to avoid travelling during rush hour.
34、What will happen if there are self driving cars with reclining seats
A、More people will live in city centers.
B、People will spend less money on transport.
C、People are likely to travel longer distances.
D、There will be lighter traffic during rush hour.
35、What’s the best title for the text
A、What Cars Will We Drive in the Future
B、Where Will We Travel with Self driving Cars
C、How Can Self driving Cars Solve Traffic Problems
