Not all bodies of water are so evidently alive as the Atlantic Ocean,an S shaped body of water covering about 29.6 million square miles. The Atlantic has,in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization.Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic is rich in oceanic liveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets.
“Storm at Sea”,a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind's earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic.
When the wind is from the west
All the waves that cannot rest
To the east must thunder on
Where the bright tree of the sun
Is rooted in the ocean's breast.
As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull.It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise—it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling.
It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath perhaps not so noticeably out in mid ocean, but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It mimics(模仿)nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic existences, too:unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat,a kind of sub ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities:sometimes peaceful and pleasant,on rare occasions rough and wild;always it is strong and striking.
4.Unlike real inland seas, the Atlantic Ocean is .
A.always energetic
B.lacking in liveliness
C.shaped like a square
D.favored by ancient poets
5.What is the purpose of using the poem“Storm at Sea”in the passage
A.To describe the movement of the waves.
B.To show the strength of the storm.
C.To represent the power of the ocean.
D.To prove the vastness of the sea.
6.What does the underlined word“symbiotic”mean
A.Living together.
B.Growing fast.
C.Moving harmoniously.
D.Breathing peacefully.
7.In the last paragraph, the Atlantic is compared to .
A.a beautiful and poetic place
B.a flesh and blood person
C.a wonderful world
D.a lovely animal

Grown ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since.A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away.He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son.A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins“Twinkle, twinkle, little star”or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them.We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as“Twinkle, twinkle, little star”and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade,is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course.By cramming,a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned.A little overlearning,on the other hand,is really necessary for one's future development.
8.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1
A.People remember well what they learned in childhood.
B.Children have a better memory than grown ups.
C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D.Stories for children are easy to remember.
9.The author explains the law of overlearning by .
A.presenting research findings
B.setting down general rules
C.making a comparison
D.using examples
10.According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is .
A.a result of overlearning
B.a special case of cramming
C.a skill to deal with math problems
D.a basic step towards advanced studies
11.What is the author's opinion on cramming
A.It leads to failure in college exams.
B.It's helpful only in a limited way.
C.It's possible to result in poor memory.
D.It increases students' learning interest.

William Butler Yeats,a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13,1865.His childhood lacked the harmony that was typical of a happy family.Later,Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered“little of childhood but its pain”.In fact,he inherited(继承)excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama(戏剧)and poetry.
Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s.His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn't lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works,Yeats's poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging.Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms,he brought modern sensibility to them.As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.
He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923.Yet,he continued writing almost to the end of his life.Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40,he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75.After Yeats's death in 1939,W.H.Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:
Earth receives an honoured guest:
William Yeats is laid to rest.
Let the Irish vessel(船)lie
Emptied of its poetry.
12.Which of the following can describe Yeats's family
A.It filled Yeats's childhood with laughter.
B.It was shocked by Yeats's choice.
C.It was a typically wealthy family.
D.It had an artistic atmosphere.
13.According to the passage, what do we know about Yeats's life
A.Yeats founded the first Irish theater.
B.Yeats stuck to modern forms in his poetry.
C.Yeats began to produce his best works from the 1910s.
D.Yeats was not favored by the public until the 1923 Nobel Prize.
14.What kind of feeling is expressed in W.H.Auden's lines
A.Envy. B.Sympathy.
C.Emptiness. D.Admiration.
15.What is the passage mainly about
A.Yeats's literary achievements.
B.Yeats's historical influence.
C.Yeats's artistic ambition.
D.Yeats's national honor.
Ⅱ.阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Secret codes(密码)keep messages private.Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.
People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 16 Code breaking never lags(落后)far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography.
There are three main types of cryptography. 17 For example, the first letters of“My elephant eats too many eels”spell out the hidden message“Meet me”.
18 You might represent each letter with a number,for example.Let's number the letters of the alphabet,in order,from 1 to 26.If we substitute a number for each letter,the message“Meet me”would read“13 5 5 20 13 5”.
A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases,or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 19 For example,“bridge”might stand for“meet”and“out”might stand for“me.”The message“Bridge out”would actually mean“Meet me.” 20 However,it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long.So codes must be changed frequently.
A.It is very hard to break a code without the code book.
B.In any language, some letters are used more than others.
C.Only people who know the keyword can read the message.
D.As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them.
E.You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out.
F.With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words.
G.Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.

Once, when I was a teenager,my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me.There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well behaved, all of them standing in line, two by two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be.The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say,“You are my knight in shining armour.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say,“You got that right.”The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded,“Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked,“How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understood how the kids would feel.I felt sorry for them.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Seeing what was going on,my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.
That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets.

Dear Peter,
I am delighted to hear that you are going to take a trip to China next year and want to learn some Chinese first before coming.I suggest that you choose Chinese daily dialogues as a start, like greeting people, asking for directions and so on,which can help you a lot during your trip.
Learning Chinese needs great effort.I'd like to be your teacher and send you an e book with my teaching schedule later.Besides, let's have an online class over the Internet every weekend.I am sure you will be able to speak some fluent Chinese before your arrival.
Looking forward to your early reply.

Seeing what was going on,my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said,“Excuse me,sir, this fell out of your pocket.”The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on.He looked straight into my dad's eyes, took my dad's hands in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lips shaking and tears running down his cheeks,he replied,“Thank you, thank you, sir! This really means a lot to me and my family.”
That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. We didn't go to the circus that night. When I asked my father why he did so,he said,“My child, it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father.Surely he wasn't begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young.”He paused for a while,as if wandering in his memory.“We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others.”
