I teach online and have been doing so for years. I understand the value of traditional face-
to-face course offerings for certain courses and certain subjects. I doubt an online course in
chemistry can ever be as effective as a face-to-face course held in a lab. Fortunately, I teach
writing, and the Internet is an effective place for teaching subjects that call for careful reading
and discussion.
It is true that there are things I cannot do in my classes on the Internet. It is also true,
however, that there are things I cannot do in my classes held in traditional classrooms. So the
question we should ask is: What works better or worse in face-to-face classes rather than in
online courses, and vice versa(反之亦然)
高二 英语 第 4 页 共 12 页
One of the things I value most in my online classes is the necessity for everyone to take
part in order to show their presence. In my face-to-face classes, a student can sit quietly and
appear to be engaged in the discussion without ever offering a thought or opinion. Online, I
consider a student who sits quietly but who does not join in the discussion to be simply not
present. Further, students in face-to-face classes who are too shy or who are talked over by
quicker and louder voices have the chance to take part in an online discussion.
When I teach online, my students and I can be inside or outside and we can sit wherever
and however we want. In Michigan, where a winter storm can make going to campus
dangerous or even impossible, the ability to learn in class from the comfort of wherever you
live is a big advantage. When the weather is not nice, I often teach while sitting in a local
coffee shop. When the weather is nice, I often teach while sitting in my backyard.
I agree that online education is not a “recipe (秘诀)for personal success.” Then again, I’m
not sure traditional face-to-face education is such a recipe, either.
24. What does the author think of online courses and traditional courses
A. Both have their advantages.
B. Online courses are more popular.
C. Traditional courses are more helpful.
D. Chemistry courses can be done online.
25. How can shy students benefit from online discussion
A. They can do a better job than louder students.
B. They can sit quietly to listen to others’ opinions.
C. They can appear to be engaged in online discussion.
D. They can think independently and take an active part.
26. Which advantage of online teaching is mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. It is much safer.
B. It happens anytime.
C. It is more comfortable.
D. It is less affected by weather.
27. What does the underlined words “be engaged in” in the third paragraph most probably
mean
A. join in B. think about C. talk about D. be present at

The Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) fire has been put out, but its spire (尖顶) and a large
portion of its wooden roof have been damaged. The terrible destruction causes a sudden sharp
pain to people around the world. “What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the
wonder anymore.”
But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely through a
video game called Assassin’s Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after
another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it
was before the fire. Further, with virtual reality technology, which is already quite mature, one
can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital
technology could help to better protect architectural cultural heritage.
The idea of making digital models of ancient buildings to save their data dates back to the
1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the
ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D models with multiple images, as well as measuring
everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as accurate as the real one.
As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital model has great useful
value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics without touching them. The virtual tour
of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the
paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics
more famous by spreading awareness about them via the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of
the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the
number of foreign tourists visiting the site in the following years. Above all, it preserves all
the information of the cultural relics.
Of course, however precise a model is, it is not the original. Maybe we will have better
technologies in the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve
architectural cultural heritage at the moment.
28. What can we see about Notre Dame in the game
A. The big fire. B. Its wooden shape.
C. Its original look. D. The damaged Notre Dame.
29. What will engineers do to create a digital copy of the ancient buildings
A. Scan the photos of the buildings B. Measure all the parts exactly.

30. How does the author prove the digital copy has vital practical importance
A. By classification. B. By listing data.
C. By giving examples. D. By comparison.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the application of the technology
A. Delighted B. Supportive
C. Doubtful D. Conservative

There are nearly 2,800 working satellites in space, which we depend on for technology
we use every day, such as video calls, online maps, satellite TV, and weather tracking.
Scientists use them to study space and learn more about our planet.
But there are many other satellites in orbit (轨道) that are no longer working. They're
among the objects cluttering (使杂乱) up space. Some of these eventually fall back toward
Earth, either landing or burning up in the atmosphere. But much of this space junk (垃圾)
circles Earth for years. Space junk is a problem. Debris (残骸) floating around Earth puts
technology and future space tasks at risk. Experts are working on ways to solve it.
Orbital debris, a type of space junk, is any human-made object that has stopped working
but continues to float around the Earth. This includes satellites that are no longer used and
pieces of spacecraft, such as rocket stages. It has been a large problem since the 1960s.
Space junk also includes broken pieces of objects. These occur when satellites hit against
things. They also result from an object crashing into an old rocket stage that still contains fuel,
causing an explosion. There have been more than 250 space explosions since the 1960s. These
tiny broken pieces can damage working satellites, which can affect research in space.
Companies all over the world are working to clean up the area surrounding our planet. A
company based in Japan will test the method of using magnets (磁石) to collect space debris.
Another mission is led by a company based in Switzerland. It plans to carry out a debris-
removal spacecraft in 2025. The craft will get hold of a piece of an old rocket, slow it down,
and move it back to Earth. Eventually, the debris will burn out like a shooting star.
Governments are trying to help too. Some are updating their country's space guidelines to
limit the amount of debris created. Space is so large that the problem won't be solved by a
single organization or a single country. We have to work on this together.

A. By putting the pieces all together.
B. By collecting space junk with magnets.

School, had just finished her speech and taken a seat when the school made an exciting
announcement that Verda had been awarded Fitchburg High School’s General Excellence
Scholarship, valued at $ 40,000. She had a few moments to reflect as the ceremony continued.
Ten minutes later, she knew what to do. She returned to the platform and apologized for
interrupting. Then she made an announcement that shocked the crowd. She refused the
scholarship and requested that the funds instead be awarded to a student who needed it more
than she did.

“I am very grateful for this, but I also know that I am not the one who needs this the
most,” Verda said.
Her generous gesture shocked the audience, made up of her fellow classmates, their
families and faculty (全体教员) members. Her mother, Rosemary, loudly cheered her
daughter on from the audience.
Verda is planning on going to Harvard University in the fall as a pre-med (医学院预科
的) student. The straight-A honor student has already been awarded a full scholarship for her
Ivy League college education. However, she could have used her school’s scholarship to help
pay for additional expenses such as books, computers and living expenses.
Verda knew, though, just how important a college scholarship is to a student whose
family is financially struggling. Her mother earned her bachelor’s degree from a local
community college at age 47, while raising her four children and holding down two jobs to
support her family. Her mother’s determination to get an education despite her financial
hardship inspired the young woman’s selfless decision. She wanted the funds to go to a
student pursuing a community college degree, just as her mother once had.
That day, Rosemary took pride in her daughter. “Now I’m 100% sure she is ready to go
into the world on her own,” she said.
