In the COVID-19 pandemic, people across the world are paying more attention to the health and happiness of each other. Some are trying to send messages of love and care in different ways.
In China, an international communication program was started to send support to other countries. It has collected eighty-five letters written by students in Beijing to young people in pandemic-stricken(疫情重创下的)countries. They are full of love and care. These letters were made into a collection of short videos called “A Letter to Friends”. They were shown in the form of sand painting.
It is reported that many hospitals abroad refuse all visitors to patients in order to stop the spread of COVID-19. Patients feel lonely and worried, so some hospitals have created “Online Wish Wall” for the public. People are welcome to post their messages there to express their love and care. So far, the hospitals have received a great deal of encouragement from the public. The messages have helped the patients to cheer up without their loved ones by their side.

Many students want to improve their memories and learn better. Today we will introduce some no-cost things you can do.
Exercise
Before you study, doing exercise may help you better remember what you will learn. Recently, researchers have found that people who did 15 minutes of training remembered more words. Scientists say the best time to exercise is right before you study. It can make you more active.
Pre-study test
The students who take a test before studying remember more information than those who don t. For example, if you are using an English textbook, you might first look at some important words at the end of the unit. You could ask yourself what they mean or how they are used. While you might not know the answer, you will probably have a goal to learn so that you can remember the answer when studying!
Sleep
A study shows that sleep helps you to learn in two ways. An expert explains that “a person with enough sleep can concentrate best”. He also says, “Sleep itself plays an important role in making the memory stronger, which is necessary for learning new information.”
Wakeful rest
When you finish studying, you often go straight to another activity. Perhaps you play a video game or watch TV. But researchers suggest that resting after you study may help you remember what you ve studied. In a study, even older adults who rested for 10 minutes after learning new words remember more words and better.

Paying for bus rides with plastic usually makes people think of plastic bus cards. But one Indonesian city has decided to accept plastic recyclable waste in place of money for city buses.
Surabaya, Indonesia s second largest city, located on the eastern end of the country s main island Java, made this decision in April 2018. Now, locals can pay for their bus rides by putting plastic cups or bottles directly on the bus. A two-hour bus ride costs 10 plastic cups or 5 bottles.
Indonesia is the second largest ocean plastic polluter, producing up to 2.4 million tons of plastic waste into the oceans every year according to a report. Only in Surabaya nearly 400 tons of plastic waste is produced every day. The head of Surabaya s transportation department(交通部门)said, “With this decision, we hope to raise public awareness about environment, especially people s awareness about plastic waste.”
Each city bus can collect up to 550 pounds of plastic bottles and cups every day. The collected bottles are sold to recycling companies and the money earned from it goes toward running the bus companies and providing money for green spaces in the city. This is certainly turning rubbish into a national treasure.
The decision is part of the city s purpose to become plastic waste-free by 2020. In order to encourage local people to take buses, the city also added the new Suroboyo buses. The new buses are air-conditioned, comfortable and easy for elderly and disabled passengers to get on and off.
The program is well received. People in Surabaya said, “We can reduce waste so it doesn t pile up at home because we can just bring it in and make good use of it. It is a win-win situation.”
This type of program can be a model for other cities worldwide and encourage citizens to recycle their plastic waste.

We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day, and it is harmful to our environment. Repeat these three words daily: reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce
Reduce means “use less”. Do not waste things. It saves money and causes less pollution. Do not order more food than you can finish. 当你不需要的时候就把灯关上。Before you buy something new, think whether it is really necessary because maybe the old one is just as good!
Reuse
Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. Look after them so that they will last. Repair them if possible. Do not throw them away and buy new ones. Do not use paper cups or paper bags.
Recycle
Recycle means “change things into something else to be reused”. We throw tons of rubbish away each year, and we have to make a change. Divide your rubbish into plastic, glass, paper and rubber. Many countries all over the world have National Parks. There are about 7,000 National Parks around the world. Most of them protect natural settings as well as the plants and animals that live there, but a few are in towns and cities.
Are there National Parks in England
There are nine National Parks in England. The first three were the Peak District, the Lake District and Dartmoor, which were all named as National Parks in 1951. Others followed afterwards, such as the North York Moors in 1952, the New Forest in 2005 and the South Downs in 2010.
Are National Parks in England the same as those in other countries
Many National Parks around the world cover huge areas of land where nobody lives, but in England most of the countryside within them is useful for farming and other activities. As a result, National Parks in England include places where people live and work, as well as wild and beautiful areas where there is little sign or human life.
Why do visitors go to the National Parks
There are plenty of activities to do in all of the National Parks in England. Visitors can walk or cycle, following marked route, and many of the parks organize activities for families.
Are there any problems in the National Parks
There are about 110 million visitors to the parks every year, bringing many benefits to the areas but creating problems too. Many popular towns and villages can be swamped(充斥)by visitors. This results in overcrowded car parks and roads ①choked with traffic. Life can be difficult for people who live there, as more and more gift shops and cafes are opened instead of those everyday shops. In popular areas, house prices can become too high for local people making it hard for them to stay in the area.
Another major problem is litter. In the parks ②it is a particular(特别的)danger to animals. Broken glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays of the sun. ③When these start in wild places, they are much harder to control and can damage(毁坏)large areas very quickly.
How can people help

The Chinese saying goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This is what the Seattle-based Fare Start does. Not only does the charity provide meals for the homeless but it also teaches them cooking skills that prepare them for jobs in food service.
In Seattle, 13.2% of people live below the poverty(贫穷)line since its beginning in 1999. Fare Start has grown, graduating 100 people from its adult cooking training program in 2013, 90% of whom went on to well-paid job within 90 days of graduation. 88% of those people still held their positions six months later.
At Fair Start, students begin their training with simple tasks like reading recipes(菜谱)and planning menus. Many also receive housing. In return, they are required to work. Starting with helping in the kitchen preparing meals for people, the trainees(实习生)move their way up the ranks, ending up in the kitchen of the Fare Start restaurant in downtown Seattle.
The practical skill-training and other support services allow successful graduates like Jayna. She lost her job as a nurse due to alcohol abuse. Since graduating from Fare Start, she has worked in a small house at Yellow stone National Park. She said, “I could not have put myself back together again. Fare Start did that for me.”
Kevin is another success story. He found that having to show up at the same place every day kept him on track. Upon leaving Fare Start, Kevin began setting goals for his future and seeing them through—including holding down his job for almost a year.

White-furred animals are in danger of dying out. Climate(天气)change is causing a fall in snow cover, leaving them exposed(暴露的), a new study suggests.
Scientists in Poland have been following the worrying case of the white-coated weasel, which sheds(褪去)its brown covering in the winter for a milky coat in order to blend easily into its icy environment.
But researchers have discovered that between 1997 and 2007 the number of days with snow cover was from 80 to 40 in Bialowieza Forest, Poland. It means that the little animals are caught out in a completely unsuitable environment, where they can be caught by foxes and crows. Scientists found that on days when there was little winter snow cover, the number of white-coated weasels they managed to catch fell to as low as 20 percent of the total. It meant that the rest had been killed.
The problem is likely to affect other white-furred animals such as the Arctic fox when the snow cover increasingly gives way to a landscape(风景)of greens and browns.
In the near future white weasels may disappear completely from many areas of Northern Europe and America. They will either be replaced by brown ones or they will evolve(进化).
Researchers also carried out tests using toys of brown and white-coated weasels to see if the colors were actually making a difference to predators(捕食者). They found lots of animals had come near to the white toys, but none had shown interest in the brown toys.
The researchers are hopeful the animals will learn to adapt(适应), but say they cannot rule out the animals disappearing completely.

If you watch the sky for about an hour after the sun goes down, you may see some “moving stars”. But they re not real stars. They re man-made satellites(人造卫星). And the biggest of all is the International Space Station (ISS). From May to July is the best season to watch the ISS flying over the earth. And people can see it with their eyes.

Laboratories, living rooms and power stations are being built. The ISS is the most expensive space program. Billions of dollars are being spent on it every year.
Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping stone for future space exploration(探测). “The ISS will help us understand the human body better, explore space and study the earth. It can help us make life on the earth better,” said Kathryn Clark, an ISS scientist.

To the Editor,
I am writing as a member of One-on-One, the sixth-grade mentoring(指导)group. Our group is two years old and made up of 14 students. Our task is to help students reach their goals through mentoring. We hope the readers of this school newspaper will join our group. This is my first year as a mentor, but I have already learned that everyone taking part in mentoring gets something out of it.
I was assigned(分配)to a mentor last year. Mentoring was one of the best things that happened to me. I was able to turn the corner at an important point in my studies, going from nearly failing math to passing it. It still amazes me that I completely changed from almost hating math to loving it! Would you believe I m even thinking of studying math in college Even if I don t, I have skills that I will use for the rest of my life. My own experience made me feel certain of becoming a mentor this year and helping other students like myself. Now that I am a mentor, I realize what a good feeling you get from helping someone else and knowing that you re making a difference in his or her life. In many situations, lasting friendships are made as well. My mentor and I hit it off right away. And we re still good friends today.
Becoming a mentor is a serious commitment(承诺). Mentors spend one hour every week with the student they are mentoring. Considering your responsibilities, it may be difficult to add another commitment to your schedule. But I hope you will at least consider the possibility.
Thank you for considering our invitation. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Mark Lopez

Minzhe has a large tea plantation(种植园)in his hometown in Guilin, Guangxi.(A)It covers an area of more than 650 square meters.
The quality of tea has to do with the tea plants. The leaf-picking and processing play an important part, too. A tea plant can only be picked when it is about three years old. At each picking, only young leaves can be picked. And tea plants are usually of different height. So Minzhe hardly ever uses machines. As an experienced tea farmer, Minzhe knows which leaves to pick and when to pick these leaves.
Planting tea needs great patience and lots of hard work. The day begins early for Minzhe. He starts working at 5 o clock in the morning.(B)He walks through the plants slowly and picks tea leaves carefully.
April is usually the busiest month for Minzhe. It s the best time to make best green tea. Minzhe has to pick about 90,000 pieces of young leaves to make one pound(磅)of green tea. Soon after picking the leaves, he begins processing(C)them. The leaves are dried and rolled and then shaped. A heavy smell of the tea leaves fills the air in the workshop.

阅读下列短文,完成文后各小题。
Koalas are tree-hugging animals with big, round ears and black oval(椭圆形的)noses. They are a symbol of Australia, the only place in the world where they are found. They are loved by many people for their small size and cartoon-like features.
A koala mother gives birth to and raises only one baby koala at a time. During a koala mother s life, she will produce up to six babies. A newborn baby is born blind with undeveloped features. It measures less than 3cm in length. Upon birth, the baby makes its way to the mother s pouch(育儿袋). It develops its eyes, legs and fur here. In fact, it lives in the mother s pouch for about six months. Then the baby will climb on its mother s back and stay with her up to a year.
Koalas spend most of their time eating and sleeping. Eucalyptus leaves are the only food koalas eat. Although the leaves are not good to most animals, koalas can digest(消化)the leaves very well. Eucalyptus leaves have a fair amount of water, so koalas seldom drink water. They eat 3 hours per day, usually during the nighttime, and rest 16 to 18 hours a day.
Koalas face many threats(威胁). The loss of their home is the biggest threat. Fire has also become a huge threat to them. Not only do koalas die when fire sweeps through their home, but it kills eucalyptus trees that they depend on for food. Koalas also are threatened by dogs, cats and other animals.
