Terrible disasters in the last 50 or 100 years have become increasingly common.Over the last 30 years, the number of weather related disasters has increased quickly, and the disasters have also affected more people and caused more economic loss. However, much of this could be avoided through disaster risk reduction (DRR降低灾难风险).
A meeting, held in Sendai, Japan last month, opened one day after Cyclone Pam (飓风帕姆) hit Vanuatu, which struck the islands with winds of up to 340 km/h and destroyed the island nation. The speech by the President of Vanuatu was given shortly after that. He begged the international community for support and stronger commitment to helping them manage climate and disaster risks. In the face of disasters, it is always the developing countries that suffer most. Damage in these countries is often worse and unluckily, there is limited money and technique to prevent these disasters.
In fact, we have seen Asian countries—especially those that have suffered a lot in disasters can't pay the price. Great loss Asia has suffered comes to a total of almost 53 billion yearly over the past 20 years.
At the same time, studies have shown once again that proper prevention saves lives and damage. With this in mind, people at the Sendai meeting were able to come up with new agreements that effective ways of disaster risk reduction will be carried out in the coming years for those who easily get damaged in disasters.

Mandara seemed to know something big was about to happen. So she let out a yell, caught hold of her 2-year-old daughter Kibibi and climbed up into a tree. She lives at the National Zoo in Washington D. C.
And on Tuesday, August 23rd, witnesses said she seemed to sense the big earthquake that shook much of the East Coast before any humans knew what was going on. And she's not the only one. In the moments before the quake, an orangutan (猩猩)let out a loud call and then climbed to the top of her shelter.
“It's very different from their normal call, ” said Brandie Smith, the zookeeper. "The lemurs (monkey-like animals of Madagascar) will sound an alarm if they see or hear something highly unusual. ”
But you can't see or hear an earthquake 15 minutes before it happens, can you Maybe you can—if you're an animal. "Animals can hear above and below our range of hearing , " said Brandie Smith. "That's part of their special abilities. They're more sensitive to the environment, which is how they survive/5
Primates weren't the only animals that seemed to sense the quake before it happened. One of the elephants made a warning sound. And a huge lizard (蜥蜴) ran quickly for cover. The flamingo (a kind of bird) gathered before the quake and stayed together until the shaking stopped.
So what kind of vibrations(震动)were the animals picking up in the moments before the quake Scientist Susan Hough said earthquakes produce two types of waves—a weak "P" wave and then a much stronger "S" wave. The "P” stands for "primary" And the "S" stands for "secondary”. She thinks the "P” wave might be what sets the animals off.
Not all the animals behaved unusually before the quake. For example, Smith said the zoo's giant pandas didn’t jump up until the shaking actually began. But many of the other animals seemed to know something was coming before it happened. "I'm not surprised at all, ” Smith said.
5.Why did Mandara act strangely one day
A.Because it sensed something unusual would happen.
B.Because its daughter Kibibi was injured.
C.Because it heard an orangutan let out a loud call.
D . Because an earthquake had happened.
6.According to Brandie Smith, .

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man Vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode of Man Vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.
When Grylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.
12.What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon
A.He got lost. B.He broke his skis.
C.He hurt his eyes. D.He caught a cold.
13.How did Nicholas keep himself warm
A.He found a shelter.
B.He kept on skiing.
C.He built a snow cave.
D.He lighted some branches.
14.On Tuesday, Nicholas ________.
A.returned to his shelter safely
B.was saved by a searcher
C.got stuck in the snow
D.stayed where he was
15.Nicholas left Grylls a very deep impression because he ________.
A.did the right things in the dangerous situation
B.watched Grylls' TV program regularly
C.created some tips for survival
D.was very hard working

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
1 Safety in the highway is not totally out of our hands. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.
2 People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people travelling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products1 safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.
Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being thrown from the car can really hurt or even kill you. 3 The safety belt's main purpose is to pull you back if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of deadly injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.
Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal crashes—the type of crash that kills the most drivers—when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding air bags in the cars they buy. 4 Effective as they are, they can't take the place of safety belts.
Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink. 5 Many people have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties for drinking and driving.
A. How to drive safely.
B.You are safer in a large car.
C.How to protect ourselves in the highway
D.Air bags are not installed in all cars.
E.That’s why safety belts should be worn.
F.Drunk driving is the most serious problem.
G.But the protection provided by air bags is limited inside or rear crashes.

第二节 概要写作(25分)
读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Speed is very important in avalanche (雪崩) rescues. There will be narrow chances to escape if a skier is buried for 30 minutes or more. Now that 30 minutes can mean the difference between life and death for a skier lost on a snowy mountain, most people would depend on life saving dogs.
Noble works as a rescue team member in a vacation land, California. He tells us, “Dogs run fastest when an accident happens.” His partner Wylee, a life saving dog, can search an accident scene the size of a football field. It only needs 5 to 10 minutes. However, 5 rescue team members have to spend a couple of hours in the same area.
Apart from its excellent speed, Noble chooses Wylee as his partner partly because it weighs only about half what other kinds of dogs weigh. Rescue team members have to carry their dogs to search sites in addition to carrying 60 pound backpacks with food, water and other equipment. The dogs need the lift so that don't get tired before they start working.
There aren't adequate data on how often dogs take part in avalanche searches or how often they are able to help local people in danger. But the dogs don't save that many people. That's because there aren't that many to save. A quarter of people in danger die from serious injuries before the snow stops moving. Of those buried who weren't killed by injuries, half die within 20 minutes. If there is a chance of rescue, though, the dogs also cut search time for the remains.
Erica Mueller, a famous director, wanted to see how the life saving dogs worked, so she volunteered to spend part of an hour in a roomy snow cave waiting to be found. She was armed with a radio and was wearing several layers to stay warm. After being rescued by Wylee, she said, “I can't talk like a survivor, but it was definitely a cool way to see how well trained those dogs are.”
