All sports people are under a lot of pressure to win, so they have to be spiritually strong. In the past, athletes only trained to get physically fit. Today, professional sports psychologists use scientific techniques to help athletes get spiritually fit too.
British player Johnny Wilkinson described some of the pressures he had felt. He played very well at the 2003 World Cup but after that he couldn't play well. He found that he had a terrible fear of failure. With the help of sports psychologists, he realized that reality changes depending on how we look at it and then everything went better.
In team sports, psychologists help players in different ways, one of which is to create a team spirit. "It's very difficult to get all the players to think in the same way, but when you see a team that works as a unit, everything happens naturally and easily, " said Professor Dave Collins, a sports psychologist.
When there is a team spirit, the players all take responsibility and don’t blame individual players for mistakes. In this way, they feel more confident and can concentrate better. Sometimes players are under a lot of pressure in a game. For example, a player may have to take a penalty kick. To reduce his fear of making a mistake, sports psychologists use a method called visualization. Psychologists simply ask players to imagine taking a perfect penalty. When players do this, certain areas of the brain become active. An interesting fact is that they are the same areas of the brain as when the player takes the real penalty.
Today sports psychologists have an important job to do. They help athletes become spiritually fit and develop a winning mentality.Having a winning mentality can really make a difference between winning and losing.

At 65, most people are thinking about getting a senior citizen bus pass. But for Montana woman Ethel MacDonald, who's now a great-grandmother, that’s when she took up tour cycling.
“I like what I like to do without having to wait for someone else to be ready, ” explains the 78-year-old great-grandmother. The appeal of taking alone on the open road, she says, is "just feeling like I'm my own boss”.
She began tour cycling in 2003, beginning with France's Atlantic coast. Aside from trips round her native United States, she's wheeled her way through the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Scandinavia and beyond.
Her companion on her Ireland trip is a pink Brompt on folding bike, which she's used on five trips around the US south. She keeps another bike with a friend for her tours of mainland Europe. This seasoned biker reckons she's traveled at least 10,000 miles. "Usually my trips are close to 1,000 miles in three to four weeks, ” MacDonald says.
She uses online travel communities Warm Showers and Couch-surfing to find a place to stay, and hosts guests herself at her home in Missoula, Montana. Warm Showers is exclusively(专门地)for touring cyclists while Couchsurfing is for any travellers wanting to meet new people or open their homes to others. By August 2016, MacDonald estimated that she'd stayed with 165 hosts and hosted around 200 guests of her own. "It saves a pile of money," she admits. "But far beyond that, the real value is the people you meet, the inspiration you get from each other, the memories, the connections."
She keeps a scrapbook(剪贴簿)filled with photos and notes from all the people she's met at home and abroad, and keeps in touch with her friends worldwide through Facebook and e-mail. When traveling, she particularly loves the "big cultural exchange" that comes with spending each night with a new host with a different perspective on the world.
For anyone who wants to follow in her footsteps, her advice is simple. “Just do it.

Don't Take the Fun out of Youth Sports
When I joined a private football league a few years ago, the sport meant everything to me. My coach said that I had lots of potential, and I became captain of my team. That was before all the fun was taken out of playing.
At first, everyone on the team got equal playing time. Then the team moved up to the top division after winning all its games, and the pressure started. Some parents, who had paid the coach extra so their daughters could have private one-on-one training, got angry when she didn't give them more playing time in our matches. The coach was replaced.
The new coach, however, took all the fun out of the game. All we did during practice was run. I always wished to God that it would rain so we would not have the training. Of course, all teams run drills; they are necessary. But we ran so much that, afterwards, we had trouble breathing. Younger people shouldn't be doing exercises intended for 18-year-old.
I was very thin before I started football, but as a member of this team I wouldn't eat much, because I was afraid of being too full to run.I feared making mistakes, and the added pressure caused me to make more than my usual share.

When I was in my fourth year of teaching, I was also (and am still) a high school track and field coach .One year, I had a student, John, who entered my class when he was a junior. John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports, so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he could do well in any event, and I would be willing to coach him for whatever interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.
About a month later, I found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking, “John, I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you're so good at it." John answered, “Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason."
From then on, I often remember John's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical students can be of themselves, I've found that a simple “I trust that you can do it! ” can go a long way!

Home on the Way
People need homes. Children assume their parents1 place as home; boarders call school "home" on weekdays; married couples work together to build new homes ... But travelers have no place to call "home”, at least for a few nights. 1______Don't they have the right to a home Of course they do.

And how about keeping relationships while in transit 3______Some send letters and postcards, or even photos; others may just call and say hi, just to let their friends know that they're still alive and well. People find ways to keep in touch. Making friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home. 4______
Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging Whenever we step out of our local boundaries, there is always another “home" waiting to be found. 5______
A.Hostels provide a clean safe place to stay while you are traveling around the world.
B.Others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make it more homely.

Is there a way to turn back the clock on your age A new study says yes. Exercise can make you younger. At least it can lower your fitness age—that is the measure of how well your body works.
A study of athletes in the National Senior Games found that their fitness age was more than 20 years younger than their chronological age. The games took place in the Midwestern state of Minnesota.
Tony Diamond took part in the games. Every morning he went to a local park and walked fast for an hour. Then, the retired navy captain ran for an hour.
Two or three times a week, he went to a gym for muscle training. Mr Diamond won three medals at the 2015 National Senior Games.
"My current age is 86 years old, and my fitness age is 44. I think I have such a good number because I do a lot of exercise during my life. I have been exercising since I was a little boy."
Helen White is a basketball player. She also teaches the sport to senior groups And she plays pickle ball. She won a sliver medal in pickle ball at the 2013 National Senior Games.
"I’m 62 years old and my fitness results showed that I was 32 years."
Ms White and Mr Diamond are some of the 5,000 Senior Games participants who took part in the fitness age study.
Pamela Peeke was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. She worked on the study with Ulrik Wisloff at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Mr Wisloff developed a fitness calculator.
An online calculator is available for anyone to use for free. Ms Peeke says there are benefits from using this test.

Suddenly, I stepped on something that was not hard. What was it It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped there, I sank under the ice. I thought that I was going to die, but I did my best to grab something to get out from under the ice I tried to grab the edge of the ice, but it was very difficult for an eleven-year-old.
It seemed like a very long time, like a year. Then, fortunately, someone helped me. He grabbed my arms and pulled me up. So, I lived and I'm still alive today.
I thanked him. At that time, my friend came back. I was annoyed at him because he was supposed to take care of me, but he didn't. He was embarrassed. ■跟踪演练
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
For a while, my neighbourhood was taken over by an army of joggers. They were there all the time: early morning, noon, and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, and middle-aged men with red faces. "Come on! ” My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. "You'll feel great."
Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, judging from the number of the people who left our neighbourhood jogging army. Pm not alone in my opinion.
First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet have a real pounding running down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn't kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.
Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn't my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, "I love being out there with just my thoughts." Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.
