My names Amy Shaw and I'm 14. Recently I wrote a short story for a competition. I love writing, but I usually keep my stories to myself. But when my mom read about this national competition for teenagers, she said I should take part. So I started. It took me ten days to finish the story. Then I sent it in.
Six weeks later, Mom showed me an e-mail she'd got. It said the judges had chosen my story for the final. It was going to be at a museum, with a famous person reading each story. Mom said that, to attend, I' d have to miss a day of school. Also, I needed to get a nice dress. I m not good at choosing clothes, so I thought that might be a problem. Luckily, Mom helped me.
The day of the final was fantastic. I'll never forget it. Mom and Dad came with me to the museum. The ten finalists had to go up on the stage. Because we were all together, it was fun, rather than scary. The thing I remember most is listening to the actor reading my story. For each character, he spoke in a different, often silly way, and made everyone laugh. My words sounded so much better when he read them.
My story didn't win, but I still got a prize: 40 books for me and 500 for my school. The head teacher asked me to stand up in front of the whole school and explain how I'd won them. I was a bit embarrassed, but it's great to have won a prize.

On a cold winter day many years ago, French art teacher Chevalier got on a train in Lyon to go to Paris. When he started his Journey, he didn't know that it was the beginning of almost 40 years of accidents and near-death experiences.
During the journey, the train fell into an icy river, killing 12 passengers. Chevalier managed to swim back to the river bank. He only had a broken leg.
Two years later, Chevalier was on a plane from Paris to Moscow when a door suddenly opened and he fell out. A few minutes later, the plane crashed; 27 people were killed. Chevalier was so lucky that he landed in a haystack (干草堆).
A few years later, he was hit by a bus, but again had no serious injuries. Then a year after that, he was driving on a mountain road when he saw a truck coming straight at him. He drove the car off the road, jumped out, landed in a tree --- and watched his car fall 100 metres down the mountain.
"There are two ways you can look at it, " Chevalier said. "I'm either the world's unluckiest man or the worlds luckiest man. " When a reporter asked Chevalier what he thought, he chose the 'luckiest' one.
Two years ago, aged 71, Chevalier bought his first lottery ticket (彩票)... and won more than £2 million.
After this, a TV company in America said they wanted him to make an advertisement. At first he accepted, but then he changed his mind. Chevalier said he wouldn't do this, because he didn't want to push his luck. Who knows If he had accepted the invitation, maybe he would have had another accident. But Mr Chevalier is a lucky man. If he'd had another accident, he probably would have survived that too!

You may need to give first aid. First aid is defined as the emergency care given to a sick or injured person. The goals of first aid are to prevent death and injuries from becoming worse.
Each emergency condition is different. However, the following rules apply to any kind of emergency.

*Stay calm. Acting calmly will help the victim feel safe.
*Take a quick look to see if the victim is bleeding, and if there is a pulse.
*Keep the victim lying down and do not move him or her. You could make an injury worse if you move the victim.
*Take necessary emergency steps.
*Call for help or ask someone to make the EMS system start.
*Do not remove clothing unless you have to. If clothing must be removed, tear the clothes along the seams(线缝).
*Keep the victim warm. Cover the victim with a blanket. Coats and sweaters can be used if a blanket can not be found.
*Reassure(使……安心) the victim. Explain what is happening and that help has been called.
*Do not give the victim any food or fruits.
*Keep the bystanders(旁观者) away from the victim. Bystanders want to have a look, offer advice, and say something about the victim’s condition. The victim may believe that the condition is worse than it really is.

Last week when I was reading at home,my younger sister rushed in and told me an old man was lying on the ground in front of our building. I immediately took my first-aid kit and ran downstairs. He was suffering a slight heart attack. And I performed CPR on him. Luckily,an ambulance came soon and he was taken to hospital. Later that day I was told by the hospital what I did helped rescue the old man’s life. I was happy to hear that. 36 There were many people who wanted to help around the old man then. Yet no one performed first aid on him as they hadn’t attended a first-aid course.
37 Here are my reasons.
You can gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to act in an emergency. You never know when you might need them—you could be at home,at work,at school or on holiday. If you have the skills, you can act whenever you’re needed.

You can stay safe at work. 39 With first-aid knowledge you can create a safe work environment and help meet your workplace’s safety requirements.
It’s helpful to your future career. The first hand experience you gain through learning first aid and using your skills could help you decide if you want to pursue a career in the health profession.
