Thirty thousand is a big number. It represents the amount of people who have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS, 肌萎缩侧索硬化). It’s also the number of times that Alex Sahinidis juggled(抛接) a soccer ball over an 11-hour period to raise money for the Live Like Lou Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to finding a cure for the discase.
Alex, a junior at Carnegie Mellon University studying economics and finance, works to raise money for ALS each year through the Students’ Union. Alex began his fundraising journey, which aimed to raise $ 1,000 for the Live Like Lou Foundation, in November of 2019. His progress was lagging behind though.
“We raise money for ALS each year, and I won’t lie, sometimes it felt routine and more often, like a chore,” Alex said. “My entire perspective changed when I met Susan. It gave me a sense of purpose.”
Susan is a resident receiving treatment for ALS at a medical center. Alex met Susan in October, when the Students’ Union provided members the opportunity to volunteer for an individual impacted by the disease. For Alex, meeting her was a life-changing experience.
Although Susan could not speak and required a machine to track her eye movements to express herself verbally, Alex recalls that she was optimistic and fun. “After completing some chores for her, she thanked me gently. But then suddenly, she broke down crying and I was immediately touched by her sensitivity and gratitude.”
His short time with Susan inspired Alex to speed up his fundraising. For the last month, he spent time individually raising money for the Iron Phi Challenge, an athletic event which raises money for patients like Susan.
Alex encourages others to find ways to give back, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. “No matter the circumstances we find ourselves in, there is always an opportunity to put a smile on another’s face and leave a positive impact on the world around you,” he said.
24. What’s the significance of number 30,000 in Alex’s charity event
A. It demonstrates his excellent soccer skills. B. It stands for the number of ALS patients.
C. It refers to the target of fundraising. D. It reflects the wide spread of ALS.
25. Why was Alex’s fundraising progress slow
A. Lack of help. B. Lack of plan. C. Lack of guidance. D. Lack of motivation.
26. What happened to Alex during his meeting with Susan
A. He expressed his concern to Susan through a machine.
B. He realized Susan was stronger than he imagined.
C. He changed his view of the world and life.
D. He witnessed the optimism of other patients like Susan.
27. What could be learned from the story
A. Helping others is helping ourselves. B. Better late than never.
C. Kindness costs nothing. D. Actions speak louder than words.

One woman named Nancy Lublin noticed that teenagers in the United States needed more mental health services. She also saw that teenagers seemed more comfortable communicating through texting. These two realizations pushed Lublin to create Crisis Text Line, an organization that focuses on crisis intervention through text messaging.
“Texting turns out to be incredibly effective for counseling in a crisis,” Lublin told Glamour magazine. “It cuts right to the chase. You don’t get hyperventilating(呼吸急促) and crying. You just get facts.” When someone texts Crisis Text Line, the counselors, who are trained volunteers, use listening, collaborative problem-solving, and referrals to best help the texter overcome their crisis. “The Crisis Text Line has blown the roof off a lot of long-held assumptions about teens,” said Anthony Pisani, a member of Crisis Text Line’s clinical advisory board. He continued: “The number of kids reaching out is unprecedented. And I think the data could be revolutionary in terms of understanding adolescents in crisis and what it takes to help them.”
In fact, the data has already helped to uncover new trends. For example, the organization found that 30 percent of texts are about depression and suicide. They also found that two-thirds of crises occur at night between 8 pm and 4 am. Although the counselors don’t exactly know what causes these trends, they hope the data, which is made publicly available on CrisisTrends.org, can be used by researchers to better understand what might trigger them. They also hope that making this data public will better reduce the shame surrounding mental health support. Since starting in August 2013, Crisis Text Line has had over 5.5 million conversations with people seeking immediate mental health help. That number is only expected to grow as more people become comfortable enough to reach out for help when they are experiencing a mental health crisis.
“People are texting us from the office, from the lunch table,” Lublin said. “They’re texting us right when something is happening. So we’re getting them at the moment we can be most impactful — and we’re telling them they’re not alone.” Lublin commented, “I’ve got to admit that it feels pretty good to save lives.”
28. What’s the main purpose of Crisis Text Line
A. To collect data about teenage health issues. B. To offer teenagers mental health support.
C. To train teens to provide texting services. D. To smooth parent-teen communication.
29. What does the underlined phrase “cuts right to the chase” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Involves a lot of work. B. Lends someone a hand.
C. Communicates feelings. D. Goes directly to the point.
30. Why is the data made public
A. To explore causes and solutions. B. To promote the organization.
C. To call attention to mental health. D. To know what adolescents care about
31. What does Lublin think of Crisis Text Line
A. It gives her a sense of achievement. B. It helps her overcome her mental problems.
C. Its services should be more effective. D. The number of its users is likely to drop.
D
An ancient plant, amaranth(苋菜), is drawing attention throughout the world and connecting indigenous people(土著人) to their history. It has become a billion-dollar food and cosmetic product since the 1970s. The ancient grain can be found in greater numbers of grocery stores in the US and Mexico, and increasingly in the Asia Pacific and Europe.
“This is a plant that could feed the world,” Beata Tsosie-Pena, a coordinator of the environmental health and justice program at nonprofit Tewa Women United, told The Guardian. Amaranth is actually a grain, like buckwheat, and native to Mesoamerica, a region including southern Mexico and many counties in Central America. Its seed is a highly nutritious source of protein, vitamins and minerals. It’s proved to be an attractive product for health-conscious shoppers.
A single amaranth plant produces hundreds of seeds and can be grown in a wide variety of climates and countries from India, China, Southeast Asia to West Africa and the Caribbean. It’s this resilience that allowed the plant to survive over the centuries, even when the Spanish arrived in the Americas in the 16th century and outlawed amaranth. Growing amaranth has also provided a degree of economic independence for indigenous farmers in Guatemala and the US, according to The Guardian. Even after facing a near-extinction event in Guatemala when state forces targeted the Maya people and burned their fields, farmers preserved their amaranth seeds by hiding them in jars in the field and under their floorboards.
“What we want is for the whole world to produce their own food,” Maria Aurelia Xitumul, a member of agricultural community Qachuu Aloom, told The Guardian. “For the seeds, distance doesn’t exist. Borders don’t exist.” Most recently, Xitumul said that during the pandemic, people with their own gardens, especially in locked down communities, felt secure knowing they had control over their food supply, thanks to amaranth.
“Amaranth has completely changed the lives of families in our communities, not only economically, but spiritually,” added Xitumul.
32. What do we know about amaranth
A. It was found in Mesoamerica in the 1970s. B. It mainly grows in the Americas and Europe.
C. It contains abundant vitamins and minerals. D. It’s one of the most expensive foods in the world.
33. What made it possible for amaranth to survive over the centuries
A. Its ability to produce many seeds. B. Its function of offering economic independence.
C. Its attraction for health-conscious consumers. D. Its ability to adjust to different environments.
34. What does Xitumul point out
A. Plants should be grown in line with local conditions.
B. Countries should work together to promote the seeds.
C. Amaranth gave people a sense of security during lockdown.
D. Amaranth helped lift many families out of poverty.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. What is the origin of amaranth B. An ancient plant has amazing benefits
C. Amaranth is becoming increasingly popular D. How can we apply a magical plant to our daily life

I was suffering from alopecia and was under strict requirements to use medical shampoos, creams and tablets. Two months later, I was 43 bald including eyebrows and eyelashes.
My lowest point was one morning in February, when I looked in the mirror and burst into 44 . I got back into bed and lay there sobbing for hours. It felt like everything was spinning out of my control. I couldn’t get over the fact that I had wasted so much of my life trying to look like 45 in magazines. I had always been struggling with 46 how I looked: I had had my teeth whitened, 47 lots of make-up, and had been 48 on and off since I was 17, and yet here I was without even a strand of hair on my head.
My husband and my eight-year-old twins were so 49 , constantly telling me how they loved me and how beautiful I was. When I 50 to get out of bed, something had clicked that the dream of looking like a 51 woman was truly over, and I had to be brave in 52 my bare head around people. I started going out with my bare head more and more, until one day I decided to ditch the wig once and for all. So many other things began to 53 place. I started to choose the clothes I personally liked, rather than what would help me to fade into the background.
I qualified as a coach to help other women to build 54 and wrote a book called How to Feel Beautiful. This work is so fulfilling to me, and not something I would ever have done had I never lost my 55 . I am so proud to be showing them how to feel good in their own skin. I’m short, fat and bald and I feel beautiful, so why shouldn’t they

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” When it comes to deciding whether or not to make friends with 56 particular person, you had better not leap to a conclusion. 57 (take) his or her personalities, characters and personal traits into deep consideration helps to see the whole picture rather than merely focus on one’s physical appearance. There 58 (be) always a lot more to it than first meets the eye.
Likewise, I’d like to draw your attention 59 another important fact that 60 we see on the cinema screen is just the tip of the huge iceberg of film-making as well. In effect, the film you see on the screen is the 61 (produce) of a huge amount of hard work, most of 62 takes place behind the scene. Some movie-reviewers hold that sound effects, visual special effects and props, as well as the core spirit and culture contained in a certain film, make 63 (great) contributions to a film’s success than the efforts on acting, music and amazing sets.
64 (hope), next time when the point comes where sharp comments or judgements must 65 (make), spare a thought for the iceberg underwater before jumping to conclusions.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At the end of the class, Mr. Smith announced our assignment for the next Monday was to talk about someone we were grateful to instead of a book report. Upon hearing it, I couldn’t help complaining to Mareya that I was so nervous about having to talk in front of the whole class.
“You’ve been in at least three plays,” Mareya pointed out. “If you don’t get stage fright in front of those big audiences, why are you bothered by a few kids in our class ”
It was true, but in a play you were part of a group. I shook my head. Plus, there were so many people I was grateful to. There was no way I could possibly pick just one. Plus, even if I picked one, I’d have no idea what to say. Plus, even if I figured out what to say, I was a million-percent positive I’d mess up if I tried to say it out loud! I’d be standing there with everyone staring at me, waiting for words to come out of my mouth. “Oh, my goodness!” I pulled my sweatshirt hood(兜帽) over my face, put my hands over my ears and said, “I don’t want to talk about it!”
But one thing about real good friends who knew you really well was that they didn’t always do exactly what you asked them to. Mareya could be pretty pushy talking of being helpful. She scribbled(潦草地写) something on a piece of paper, lifted my hood, and smiled. She’d drawn a funny elephant with the word BREATHE coming out of its trunk.
“This is Franky, the ‘everything’s going to be all right’ elephant,” Mareya giggled. She held the picture up to her ear and asked, “What’s that you say, Franky You think my friend Arizona should come over to my house this weekend so we can work on the talk together ”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
And that was exactly what happened.
On Monday morning, however, I decided to talk about Mareya.

第二节
And that was exactly what happened. On the weekend, I went to Mareya’s home. When I got there, she welcomed me at the door and led me to her study, we sat at the desk and began preparing our talks. She asked whom I was going to talk about and I said maybe I would talk about my father, who taught me to be strong when faced with difficulty. She asked me to talk about things I felt grateful for and she listened attentively. After she listened to my talk, she gave some suggestions to improve it until it was good enough.
On Monday morning, however , I decided to talk about Mareya. I stood on the stage and began my talk, “I am grateful to my friend Mareya. She was kind and helpful enough to draw Franky to make me believe that everything’s going to be all right and gave me great confidence to face the task. It was she who comforted me when I was scared of the task and spared her weekend to help me prepare the talk. She is my best friend and I am really grateful to her.
