Early one October morning, a nice woman sent a young magpie (喜鹊) to my home for care. The magpie flew into the front window of a truck and got hurt, but luckily the woman was passing by.
With my care, the young magpie was doing well, but he was not happy to find himself in cage (笼子). Several days later, his wings were fine and nothing else was broken. He recovered. I decided to drive him to where he was found. When I arrived, I got the cage out of the car and opened the door. I offered my arm. He jumped onto it and looked around. I could see he knew where he was.
Next to us was a tree. He flew straight to the top to join a wagtail (鶺鴒). The wagtail made lots of high singing and flew off across the field. The young magpie remained on the top of the tree. I began to worry as he still needed his parents.

Today, by carefully choosing dog parents, humans have created many different kinds of dog. Each kind has its own look and talents and its own role within human society. Here are three examples of "a dog's life" in the human world.
Today, many hospitals let specially trained dogs in to bring love and cheer to patients. Shaynee is a therapy(治疗)dog. She visits children who are in hospital. Dogs like Shaynee help patients feel calm and at peace which can be hard in a busy hospital. they help both children and adults stay strong during long hospital stays, and, some suggest, even help them get better.
Today some beagles(小猎犬)work in airports for the government They are part of the program called the Beagle Brigade. A beagle is good for the work because of its powerful nose, and ability to follow smells. The Beagle Brigade's job is to smell everything that comes into the country. They make officers notice illegal(非法的)fruits, vegetables, and other foods in luggage or in mail. The beagles do the job far better than any human could.
While some dogs are working hard, others are free to spend their days resting and playing Across the world, many pet dogs are treated like children. Many have their own rooms and all the things a dog could want. Some even have their own clothes. Many of these pets spend their days playing, learning to follow or even going to classes. Their owners give them the best, and enjoy doing so.
Whether as workers or objects of affection(钟情), dogs have become helpful to humans in many ways. There are plenty of advantages for the dog, too. Eight hundred years ago, a man in southern Turkey invented an amazing clock. It was more than 7 meters high. At its base(基座)was a life-size model elephant. Every half hour, something amazing happened. The whole clock came alive: Model birds, dragons, and people started to move.
The clock's inventor was an engineer named al-Jazari He lived in Turkey. Al-Jazari was probably one of the greatest engineers in history. Some historians call him "the father of modern-day engineering. "
We know about al-Jazari mostly from a book that he wrote. ______________They include clocks and hand-washing machines. The book also has drawings that show how each machine works.
Many everyday things today-from toys to car engines(发动机)一still use al-Jazari's ideas. Without his machines with moving parts, we might not have modern-day robots.
Today, it is still possible to see what al-Jazari's elephant cock looked like. A full-size working mode is in Dubai's Ibn Battuta Mal. There, every half hour, al-Jazari's most amazing invention comes to life once again.
How Does the Elephant Clock Work
A bowl with a small hole floats(浮)in a water tank(水箱)inside
the elephant's body. As the bowl slowly sinks(下沉), it pulls a rope that
moves a human figure. His moving pen shows the number of minutes past he hour.
Every half hour, the water bowl becomes full and sinks completely. This causes a ball to fall from the top of the clock. The movement of the ball causes a phoenix to move and make a sound.
The ball then drops out of a falcon's mouth into the mouth of a Chinese dragon. The weight of the ball causes the dragon's head to move down and the dragon's tail pulls the water bowl back up.
Finally, the ball drops out of the dragon's mouth and into a vase. As the ball lands in the vase, the elephant driver moves and makes a sound. The cycle begins again until there are no more ball in the top of the clock.

Many scientist once believed that physical similarities between identical twins are genetic(基因的), while their personalities, intelligence and other differences between them are an effect of their environment. Now scientists are discovering that the boundaries(界限)between genes and environment are not so clear.
Twins Jim Springer and Jim Lewis were adopted(领养)as babies and raised by different couples. When the Jims finally met at age 39, they discovered they had plenty in common. Both were six feet tall, 180 pounds. They had the same smile and the same voice. When scientist Thomas Bouchard Jr. invited the Jim twins to his lab, people there found it very hard to tell them apart.
But the similarities didn't stop at the physical. They'd both had dogs named Toy. They had both married women named Linda and then their marriage broke up. They’d both been policemen, enjoyed music, and left love notes around the house for their wives. They had so much in common, it seemed unlikely these were just coincidences (巧合).
The Jim twins were just one of 137 sets of separated twins Bouchard tested. When they compared the twins' IQ scores, Bouchard and his team reached a surprising conclusion(结论). They concluded that intelligence was mostly connected to genes rather than to training or education. It seemed the differences in family and environment had little effect.
However, genes can't control everything, argues geneticist Danielle Reed, who also studies twins. Reed's research shows that though nothing can truly change our DNA, environmental differences that a child experiences before birth and in their first year can sometimes affect the way the DNA behaves, making even identical twins into very different people. "What I like to say is that Mother Nature writes some things in pencil and some things in pen, "She explains. "Things written in pen you can't change. That's DNA. But things written in pencil you can. "
69. How many physical similarities between the Jim twins are mentioned
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
70. What did Bouchard's study find about the twins
A. Each seemed to be as tall as their twin.
B. Each had the same hobby as their twin.
C. Each had almost the same ability as their twin.
D. Each had about the same IQ level as their twin.
71. What is Reed's opinion about genes and environment
A. Only DNA has an effect on our development.
B. Environment could possibly change some things about us.
C. There are no boundaries between genes and environment.
D. Environmental differences can sometimes change our DNA.
72. What is the passage mainly about
A. The way the DNA behaves.
B. The similarities between the Jim twins.
C. The connection between intelligence and families.
D. The effects of genes on personality and intelligence.

We see humans all around us. But when was the first human seen Early humans did not leave behind any written records. However, they left behind many paintings on the walls of the caves(洞穴) where they lived. These paintings tell about their life, and we know these early humans walked on four limbs(四肢) like apes(猿). Also, they did not live at one place but moved from place to place in search of food and water.
Without any tools, early humans used stones, bones of animals, and sharp pieces of wood to dig, hunt and cut their food. They also used these to protect themselves from animals. Since stones were used to make tools, this age was called Stone Age.
With time going, tools made of bones and stones were replaced with metal(金属的) ones which were stronger, sharper, and long-lasting. Metals were also used for farming and making knives. Copper(铜) was the first metal to be used.
The first fire that early humans noticed was natural fire caused by lightning(闪电). With fire, early humans could now light up dark caves. They could keep themselves warm during cold weather and cook meat. Also the fire could drive animals away.
Early humans noticed new trees growing from the seeds(种子) that fell to the ground from the fruits. This gave them the idea that they could make their own food by planting seeds, which led to farming. With the beginning of farming, early humans began to settle down(定居). They moved out of the caves and lived on farms and near their fields together, then the first villages came up.
Raising animals was a big event in human history that changed the life of early humans. The wild dogs were probably the first animal to be raised. As time went, goats, sheep, cows, donkeys, and horses were kept, too. This led to herding(畜牧业). Milk, meat and wool came from these animals.

Although it’s said Van Gogh(梵高)(1853-1890) sold only one painting during his lifetime, different theories(理论) exist(存在).
It is true that The Red Vineyard is the only painting sold during Van Gogh’s lifetime, and that was officially(官方地)recorded and accepted by the art world. It’s recorded that Van Gogh ( https: / / www. / artists-quotes-vincent-van-gogh-2577421https: / / www. / _blank ) started painting at 27, and died at 37. His famous paintings were produced after he went to France in 1888, only two years before he died. So it would be clear that he did not sell many.

When Wang Haiyan was young, her favorite toys weren’t Barbie dolls. Instead, she started learning to make shadow puppets(皮影) from her father at 13. Now 43, Wang has spent 30 years practicing and spreading the art.
Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses puppets made from leather(皮) or paper, accompanied(伴奏) by music and singing. It was invented during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC—AD 24). It tells us about folk tales and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county, Shanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.
Puppet—makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets including washing the leather, carving(雕刻) and painting, according to Wang. Carving is the most difficult part.
“We have a special carving skill—moving the leather under the knife,” Wang said. It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick(砖块) to strengthen her left hand while practicing. Scientists say they’ve developed a new system(系统). It can use “machine learning” to predict when and where lightning(闪电) will strike(闪击). The research was led by engineers from Switzerland.
European researchers have estimated(估算) between 6, 000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. The strikes can also cause power cuts, destroy houses and start forest fires. For these reasons, some climate scientists have studied to develop methods to predict and control lightning. But no system has been created to effectively predict lightning.
The new system is being tested in the experiments(实验). It used a combination of data(数据资料) from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model. It was trained to tell weather conditions that were possible to cause lightning.
The model was created with some data. The data was collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to(与……有关) four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity(相对湿度) and wind speed.
The atmospheric(大气的) data was put into a machine learning algorithm(计算程序), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
Amirhossein Mostajabi is a PhD student who led the development of the new system. He said, “Common systems for collecting such data are slow and complex, and they require expensive collection equipment(设备) like radar or satellites (卫星).”
“Our system uses data that can be gotten from any weather station,” Mostajabi said. “This will improve data collection in the areas which are not covered by radar and satellites or in places where communication systems have been cut,” he added.
47. According to the passage, the strikes can’t cause ________.
A. power cuts B. earthquakes
C. forest fires D. the death of people
48. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 5
A. The lightning strike. B. The system being tested.

49. What do the last two paragraphs mainly tell us
A. Where weather stations should be built.
B. How the machine learning algorithm works.
C. The advantages of the new system in data collection.
D. The new system has effectively predicted lightning in faraway areas.
50. Which of the following statements about the new system is TRUE
A. Its prediction model has been tested for 12 years.
B. It has been put into use in cities and mountain areas widely.
C. The new system requires expensive collection equipment to collect data.
D. It uses machine learning to predict the time and places of lightning strikes.

Everything is made of something. Nothing is made of nothing.
Chemistry is about the smallest things that other bigger things are made of, and what happens when they change. The word chemistry comes from chemical, which is an example of one type of the very small things that other bigger things are made of. The words you are reading now are made of a dark liquid called ink(墨水), which is written on paper. The paper itself is made out of the chemicals that wood is made out of. Both the ink and the paper were made by different chemical processes. A chemical process is what happens when chemicals come together to make other chemicals, and therefore other things.
Cooking makes chemical changes. Your different ingredients are made of different chemicals, and when you put them together and make them hot and cook them, the chemicals change into new chemicals and the different ingredients make something new. That tomato sauce you’re making is made of tomatoes, onions, garlic, salt and pepper. Those ingredients each have their own chemicals and their own flavors, but now with your sauce you’ve made something different, something that has its own flavor, all the ingredients mixed together, all the chemicals mixed together, something new.
You can smell the chemical changes, too, as they go up into your nose, especially when you forget about your sauce and it doesn’t just cook but burns and becomes black and has a really bad flavor. You can’t make it better, either, because once chemicals change, they can’t be changed back again.
8. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Chemistry. B. Chemical.
C. The smallest things. D. The bigger things.
9. What is a chemical process
A. Ink is written on paper.
B. Paper is made out of wood.

If your pencil box is broken, the batteries (电池) in your flashlights run out, or you have some leftover food, how will you deal with these things You will probably throw them all into one rubbish bin. But actually, we need to sort (分类) all the rubbish separately. If you don’t sort your rubbish, all of it will go to a special place where it is buried (埋藏) together. As a result, it will take up some fields. Some rubbish will pollute the groundwater. Some rubbish that can be reused will be wasted.
In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on rubbish sorting.
Shanghai has called on all the people living in this city to sort their rubbish into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Wet waste is known as household waste. They are things you don’t want but pigs can eat. Paper, metal, glass, plastic and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries. Finally, any waste that is not wet, recyclable or harmful will go to the “dry waste” bin.
Many other Chinese cities are also using this way to sort their rubbish. For example, Deyang has been sorting its rubbish into the same four groups since several years ago. Students in Deyang have already received waste-sorting guidebooks. They have studied these books and known how to sort the rubbish.
China is now improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it's never too late to learn how to -sort your rubbish rightly. We should take an active part in it.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, do people remember less If you know your computer will store information, why do you store it in your own personal memory, your brain Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow made some experiments (实验). She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory.
In the first experiment, they asked two groups of people to put 40 unimportant facts into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would store the information. The second group understood that the computer would not store it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In the second experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where
to find the information on the Internet. The information was in an exact computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember where the folder is better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. However, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize a lot of information so that they are able to get it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less clever, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

A. People organize the information like a computer.
B. People remember how to find the information.
C. People remember how to make a folder.
D. People keep the information in mind.
50. What’s Professor Betsy Sparrow’s conclusion (结论)
A. People become more and more clever.

Boyan Slat has been dreaming of cleaning up the world’s oceans for a long time.
In 2010, he went on a diving (潜水) vacation in Greece and was shocked. “I saw more plastic bags than fish in the water,” he said.
From then on, Slat began to pay more attention to ocean pollution. He decided to give up higher education and set up the Ocean Cleanup, a non-government organization. Its purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world’s first ocean cleanup system (系统) with his team.
Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and it can take up to 500 years to break down. One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the guqin. one of the four arts 一 along with go, calligraphy(书 法)and painting. It first appeared over 3, 000 years ago and stands for China's solo musical instrument tradition.
At first, the guqin had only five strings(弦), meaning the five elements(元 素)of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Later, in Zhou Dynasty, King Wen of Zhou added a sixth string for his son. King Wu of Zhou, added a seventh string to encourage his army to fight with the Shang.
Ambience was important in playing the guqin. Usually, it was practiced in a quiet setting and never for public performance. Ancient artists enjoyed performing by a stream in the mountains. The sound of the guqin mixed with the echoes (回音)from the mountains, until the musician felt he was at one with nature. Playing it m snow was also an enjoyable activity for ancient artists, who believed the instrument was the purest of its kind in the world. Also, a night with moonlight was considered wonderful for playing the guqin. Wang Wei (701 -761), a highly talented man of the Tang Dynasty, liked playing it in a bamboo forest on nights with moonlight most.
Guqin pieces are usually three to eight minutes long, with the longest being Guangling lerse, which is 22 minutes long. Other famous pieces include Plum Blossoms in Three Movements, Wild Geese Landing on the Sandbank and Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute.
Nowadays, there are fewer than one thousand well-trained guqin players and perhaps no more than fifty living masters.
