A problem is only a problem until there is a solution(解决办法). We find solutions by thinking creatively. (1) In other words, we think outside the box. Sometimes, thinking outside the box solves not just one, but two problems. Amsterdam is one of the most crowded cities in Europe. As a result, housing is very expensive, especially for students.
(2) However, finding this type of apartments was almost impossible until recently. While the colleges in Amsterdam were trying to solve the housing problem, thousands of shipping containers(集装箱)were lying quietly in ports(港口)around the world. These huge steel containers carry products from one country to another. The life of each container is about 10 years. (3) Yet they can t recycle all of them because there are so many.
Back in Amsterdam, a company came up with amazing ideas. Why not reuse these shipping containers as student apartments (4) They are all the same size and fit together perfectly. The steel is strong. Moreover, these containers are so widely available that they are quite cheap to buy. For all these reasons, they can be used to build apartments quickly and cheaply. Building began in 2005, and after only a few weeks, hundreds of Amsterdam students had new homes.
When students first heard about this idea, they thought the container apartments would be small, noisy, and cold. (5) Each container apartment has a kitchen, a bedroom with a study area, and a bathroom. The apartments are warm and quiet. They even have a high-speed Internet connection. Living in a shipping container has become popular. Today, over 3,000 Amsterdam students live in the container village.
A.Students need low-cost apartments. B.The containers are great for building apartments. C.However, they were surprised when they saw them. D.Steel companies recycle some of the old containers. E.Recycling the steel containers has many advantages. F.We use our imagination and come up with creative ideas.

You ve been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you re a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and say it you think you don t know what it means (1)
Say it.
First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself. (2) Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don t know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read—you have the word!
Use context.
If this doesn t work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. (3) Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
(4)
If the context doesn t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know These can help you understand what it means. If you don t know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, -er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
Look it up.
If the three steps above don t work, you can look it up. (5) either a book or online.
Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don t know.
A.Use word parts. B.Look at the words. C.It might sound like a word you know. D.You can find the word in a dictionary, E.Following some easy steps can help you. F.If the word shelter doesn t look familiar, look at the words around it.

Have you ever tried to hide your emotions(情感)from someone during a conversation (1)
Scientists from the Ohio State University have found that people are able to tell other people’s emotions according to changes in the color of their faces.
Scientists studied pictures of people’s facial expressions. (2) For example, happiness makes our faces red around the cheeks and a little blue around the chin. Disgust(厌恶)creates not only a blue-yellow color around the lips, but also a red-green color around the nose and forehead.
“We believe these color patterns are the result of small changes in blood flow triggered(触发)by the central nervous(神经)system.” Lead researcher Alex Martinez said.
(3) Does the color alone or also facial expressions help people tell others’ emotions
To figure this out, scientists added color patterns to pictures of faces that showed no facial expressions. (4) They were able to tell the emotions 75 percent of the time without any difficulty.
(5) For example, when two people are heatedly arguing over something, we say they are red in the face. When a person is very angry, we’d say he or she is blue in the face.
A.But this raises a question. B.It is shown that human emotions are influenced by colors on the face. C.They found that every facial expression is connected to a certain color. D.It’s not always easy, because the color on your face may tell the truth. E.Then, volunteers were asked to tell what emotions the faces were showing. F.This is why there are some Chinese sayings that connect emotions to the color of one’s face.

A high school history teacher once told us, “If you make one close friend in school, you will be the most lucky. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life.” Experience teaches that he is right. (1) To most of us, friendships are considered very important, but we need to make it clear in our minds what kinds of friendship we want. You may ask yourself the following questions. (2) Do we want to share ourselves or do we want to walk on the surface
For some people, many friendships on the surface are quite enough and that s all right. (3) It s whether or not our expectations are the same as our friends expectations. If so, the sharing of personal experiences including our tears as well as our dark dreams is the surest way to deepen friendships.
(4) The greatest is to expect too much too soon. Deep relationships take time. Another “main difficulty” is the selfishness(自我中心)to think one “possesses(控制)” the other, including his time and attention. In fact, friendships require actions in return. (5) Finally, there is a question of taking care of. Unless you spend reasonable time together, talking on the phone, writing letters, doing things together, friendships may die away.
A.Good friendship is just not easily formed. B.We should understand why we need friends. C.Are they to be close or kept at arm s length D.What are some of the difficulties of friendship E.In other words, you must give as much as you take. F.But at some point we need to make sure one thing.

Hi Grace,
How s it going Sorry I haven t emailed you for a while, but I had so much to do!
I had told you about my decision to take up a sport. I knew I wasn t fit and I wanted to get some exercise. But that wasn t the only reason that I decided to do a sport. Students who play sports do better at school. (1) Exercise also helps learning and memory(记忆).
(2) First, I tried soccer. I had played a bit of soccer before and I thought it wouldn t be too bad. I knew I couldn t run for very long without feeling tired. On the first day, I was able to run for the first ten minutes, but then I was so tired that I couldn t even kick the ball!
Then, I tried volleyball. (3) I was able to run for the first twenty minutes and I wasn t the slowest runner in the team! After a few weeks, I could run faster and longer. I was doing better and feeling better. (4) Maybe I m not a team sport person after all!
Finally, I tried kung fu. It s a great sport that exercises the body and the mind. You learn to follow instructions carefully and do what you are asked to do. This is the right sport for me! (5) I feel so confident that I even showed some moves to the class last week! Can you believe it
I hope you re OK! Write and let me know what you ve been doing!
Bye for now!
Yours,
Amy

What is the most stressful thing in school It is probably exams. Exams can put us under a lot of pressure. But some students do well under pressure, while others feel terrible. (1)
It all comes down to dopamine(多巴胺). (2) It plays many important roles: influencing memory, attention and how we learn. Our brains work best when there is an even balance(平衡)of dopamine—not too much or too little.
The brain controls dopamine in two ways. It either takes out dopamine quickly, or gradually. Exam success can be related to how fast dopamine goes back to an even balance.
(3) If you become stressed, your brain will start to overload(超负荷)on dopamine. (4) The quicker you are able to go back to an even balance of dopamine, the quicker you can fix yourself and perform better on a test.
Scientists found that, during a test, people who slowly got back to an even balance of dopamine scored 8 percent lower. (5) But don t fear, there is some good news. The study also found that the more practice you get, the less stressed you ll be. So, it turns out that practice really does make perfect.
A.What happens when we sit for an exam B.It is like a cup overflowing(溢出)with water. C.So, why do some students perform better under stress D.That s the difference between a good mark and a bad mark. How do people find their inner talent British author and speaker Sir Kenneth Robinson talked about this at TED. He told the story of Gillian Lynne, a dancer and a choreographer(编舞者)who has worked on famous musicals like Cats and Phantom of the Opera(《歌剧魅影》).
(1) She couldn t think carefully about she was learning and often found herself unable to keep still because she was bored. Her mother was quite worried about her. She took Lynne to a doctor. For 20 minutes, she talked about the problems Lynne was having in school. (2) As they left the room, the doctor turned on the radio. He then said to Lynne s mother, “Just stand and watch her.” (3) The doctor then turned to Lynne s mother and said, “Mrs. Lynne, your daughter isn t sick. She s a dancer. Take her to a dance school.”
So she did. (4) Lynne later went to the Royal Ballet School, one of the world s greatest dance schools and became a great dancer.
After leaving the school, she worked on some of the most successful musicals in history. (5)

American and British people both speak English. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.
(1) Often, Americans don t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don t know”. Or they may say “Whaddya say ” instead of “What did you say ” However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
Sound is not the only difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. (2) Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
(3) In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. There are also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook ” But the British often leave out the helping verb. (4) Most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. You can prepare a bunch of one-dish meals like casseroles, chilis, and stews, and then freeze them. When you re ready to eat, just pop your meal into the oven or place it on the stove(火炉)and you have a hot, fresh, home-cooked meal in no time.
