Every Friday night, Winston would stand at the gate of the railway station, playing his violin happily. He smiled to everyone and many people put money into the hat in front of him.
One day, Winston showed up and put his hat on the ground as usual. But different from what he always did in the past days, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground.
It said: Last night, a gentleman named George Miller left an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come soon, Mr. Miller. About half an hour later, a middle-aged man rushed to Winston in a hurry and said, “It s you! I know you are an honest man and will certainly be here.”
Winston asked, “Are you Mr. Miller Did you lose anything ”“ A lottery ticket!” answered the middle-aged man. Winston then returned it to the man. Cycads grow in warm places. They are tall and green all year round. Their leaves grow on the top and flowers seldom come out. Some have bright orange fruits. They usually need hundreds of years to grow into adult plants.
Cycads are facing problems now. In South Africa, the situation of cycads is getting terrible, but this has drawn little attention from the public. “In fact, there are 38 kinds of cycads in South Africa. Among them, 2 kinds have disappeared since 2003 and 25 kinds are in great danger,” said a gardener. “Do you know what the loneliest plant is in the world It is Wood s Cycad. Someone found it in a forest in 1895. It is the only one of its kind.”
So what causes cycads to be in danger Surprisingly, the danger is from the people who love them most. These slow-growing adult cycads even sell for tens of thousands of dollars each. As time goes by, they have become a symbol(象征)of wealth and position in society. This makes cycad lovers want to own more. Cycad lovers buy and plant them in their private gardens. As a result, nearly all these cycads die because the living conditions have been changed.
Recently, South African government has taken some actions to protect cycads from being stolen and traded. At the same time, people around the world should also work together to protect the plants.

When you do your homework, you may often meet some problems. How do you solve them Tom, a middle school student, would take out his smart phone, open a special app(应用)and search the problem. Answers soon appear on the screen.
Nowadays, many students do homework with the help of the special apps like Tom. “It s convenient. You don t have to go out or wait for a tutor(家庭教师)at home,” Tom said. “You also learn by seeing how others work them out. It s very helpful and can improve students abilities,” said John, another student. He said it was especially true for new types of homework.
John s Chinese teacher often asks students to give speeches on great writers. When it comes to John s turn, he usually searches online, picks out certain stories and makes PPTs. “I ve become skilled at finding information online and using Microsoft Office,” John said.
However, many people think this trend also brings up problems. Some students just copy the answers online without thinking. They become lazy.
Head teacher Mr. Wang in Tom and John s school thinks that knowing how to use the Internet is important. The key is to have good self-control. “No matter how difficult the problem is, think about it by yourself first. Remember not to depend on the Internet too much,” the teacher said. “Be sure to understand the reasons behind the answers, or you won t make progress. If you don t have confidence in your self-control, ask your parents for help.”

Following the rule of “social distancing” is probably well-known to us all now. It refers to staying away from crowded places to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Some companies are taking advantages of this by changing their logos.
Coca-Cola, for example, placed the letters of its famous brand further away from each other to show social distancing. The encouraging sentence “Today, being apart is the best way of being together.” is printed below the logo. McDonald s Brazil has separated its famous arches(拱门)in a picture posted on the Internet. But you re not in China—you re in Manchester in Britain. You might see similar things in many other cities. Chinese products have been going global(世界性的).

People send birthday greetings by using cards in both Eastern and Western countries. It is not known when and where exactly the tradition of sending birthday cards began. It is believed that it began in England in the early nineteenth century. In those days people sent birthday cards when they couldn t wish somebody a happy birthday in person.
In 1840 the first stamp was used in Britain and sending birthday cards became easier, cheaper and more popular. The development of color printing processes in the 1930s also helped to increase sales of birthday cards.
Today cards are often given with a present, even when people can express their wishes face to face. In recent times e-cards have also become popular. Many people are starting to use e-cards instead of traditional cards because they are free, environmentally friendly and easy to arrive. As the heat of the summer almost kills the people, people there have found their place to cool themselves down.
Thousands of Chinese holiday-makers ran into a big problem when they finally escaped the heat at a wonderful water park—they had no way to escape each other. Up to 10,000 people went into the water park—known as the “Dead Sea” of China—during a spell of high temperatures in Daying County, in China s Sichuan province.
With so many people using inflatables(可充气物)to float around the pool, there is no hope of doing any swimming or diving. But that didn t prevent the holiday-makers from having a little fun, as they played with each other, took photos and enjoyed the socializing(社交), they didn t hate being crowded. It can hold up to 10,000 visitors at once and more than a million people visit every summer, according to its owners.
The man-made “sea” was created using rich salt resources in the region and has 43 different minerals and microelements(微量元素). Because it has more than 22 per cent of salt, swimmers float freely on the surface—much as they do in the Dead Sea in the Middle East.
When they re not in the crowded pool, visitors can relax at a spa, take a swing on a golf course or sit back and watch foreign cheerleaders who entertain(娱乐)the crowds.

Do you often listen to music at loud volumes(音量) You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing. Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss, because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.
The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB(分贝)for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells in our inner ears. These cells notice sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss. Once this happens, it s hard to get your hearing back.
Some people might think that their music isn t all that loud. But this depends on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable. The “safe level” for most sound is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 dB is about equal to(相当于)the noise of a subway.
Here is some advice on safe listening. Over-the-ear headphones(头戴式耳机)are better than in-ear ones. They do a better job of stopping outside noise, so you can listen at a lower volume. Don t listen to loud music on your headphones for a long time. Follow the 60:60 rule: listen to music at 60 percent of your headphones maximum volume for no more than 60 minutes a day.

Strawberries look nice, but light pressure can make them out of shape. Nowadays, there are many young people who are just like strawberries. They easily break down when they face difficulties. They don t know what to do when they are in trouble. They have a common name—strawberry kids.
Why are many students so easy to break down Parents and schools are main reasons. Parents do almost everything for them in their daily life, while schools care more about their grades instead of developing their personality(个性).
Liu Yue, 13, is from Fujian. His mom hardly criticizes(批评)him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him strictly, he felt surprised and sad. He began to doubt his ability.
Students should do something to make themselves mentally strong. An expert said, “When you are in trouble, don t ask for help too quickly. You should try to deal with problems first by yourself. I also advise you to take an active part in sports and social activities. That can make you mentally strong.”
Growing up is not just a happy process. Pains also go along with it. The most important thing is to face the pains bravely and learn from them.

A farmer had a friend and his friend was famous for growing apple trees.
One day, the farmer s friend gave him a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it.

One day, when Henry was working in a restaurant, a snake suddenly appeared and bit his hand.
A few days earlier, the snake arrived from Asia in a box of bananas. It climbed out and hid somewhere.
“I was trying to pick it up when it bit me again. I threw it across the kitchen, and it landed on a table.”
While the snake was lying on the table, Henry quickly picked up his mobile phone and took a photo with it. Then the snake hid behind the fridge.
When Henry was trying to find the snake, his hand began to hurt badly. He hurried to hospital. As the doctors were checking him, the pain got worse. But they could not help him because they did not know what kind of snake bit him.
As he was lying there in great pain, Henry suddenly remembered the photo. The doctors sent the photo to a zoo. As soon as they learned what kind of snake bit him, they gave Henry the right medicine, and he left hospital the next day.

Want to say “hello” from Disneyland Send a post card!
Beautiful scenes of paradise(乐园), wild animals, silly pictures—you can find them all in one place. Where On a post card! Have people always sent post cards No. Before post cards, people liked sealed letters.
The idea for the first decorated(装饰)post card came to John P. Charlton in 1861. He thought a simple card with decorations would be a great way to send a note. Then in the late 1800s, post cards with pictures appeared. By law, people had to write their note on the front—on the picture! The back was only for the address. Several years later, England allowed a divided-back post card. Then people could write their note on the back left side and put the address on the right. During the early 1900s, the golden age of post cards, picture post cards became a craze of the world. In 1908, Americans alone mailed over 677 million post cards.
Today, post cards are the third most popular collection in the world after stamps and coins.

When we were little kids, we knew about traffic lights. The color red means stop, the color green means go and the color yellow means slow down or shows some caution(小心). But why are these colors used for traffic lights Why couldn t they be colors like blue, brown or orange Here is the history of the colors for traffic lights.
Well, it s important to know that before there were traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals(信号)for trains. At first, railway companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go and green to mean caution. But train drivers had a few problems with the color white meaning go. They could easily mistake stars at night for the signal to go. So railway companies moved to the color green to mean go, and the color yellow to mean caution.
The color red has a lot to do with danger. Red is the color with the longest wavelength(波长), so it can be seen from a greater distance than other colors. The color yellow is used to mean caution because it has a little shorter wavelength than red, but not as short as green.
Believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because they were easier to see in poorly-lit areas. But people once again used red to mean stop after more highly reflective(反光)materials were developed. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones and school buses continue to be painted yellow.
Traffic lights really came a long way.

Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world. 29 billion bottles of water are drunk each year. It takes 17 million barrels of oil to make these bottles. That s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.
So why don t more people drink water from the tap in the kitchen Some people drink bottled water because they think it is better for them than water out of the tap, but that s not true. In the United States, the government makes sure water from the tap is safe.
People love bottled water because it is convenient to take with them. But maybe if they understand the problems it makes, they will try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a reusable bottle instead of a plastic one. Although plastic water bottles can be turned into some other useful things, only a small number of them are reused. The rest are taken away in rubbish trucks, or even worse, they end up as rubbish on the land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take hundreds of years to break down.
Water is good for you, so keep drinking it. But think about how often you use plastic water bottles, and see if you can make a change. If you take one to school, don t throw it away—bring it home and put tap water in it for the next day.
