This morning, my American friend Allen and I paid a special visit to the Chinese
Paper-cutting Show held in our city museum. Upon our arrival at the museum, we caught sight
of crowds of visitors. What impressed us was that various styles of paper-cuts were on display ,
with typical works from different regions nationwide. To our satisfaction, the exhibits were
skilful, creative and original. Unexpectedly, the visitors could practise paper-cutting in person
under artists’ guidance. So immersed in the show were we that we were reluctant to make a
departure.
From this show we gained an in-depth understanding of the charm of Chinese paper-cutting
and the excellence of the traditional Chinese art,.
第二节(满分 25分)
Possible version:
The local vet was still at his office, so I loaded the poor creature into a taxi and headed
there. After a quick check on the poor dog, the vet shook his head with regret. He promised me
he would try his utmost but Shep was unlikely to get through it unless there is a miracle. While
the vet treated the sores carefully, I tried to drop water in his mouth and fed him with food bit by
bit. I never gave up hope of getting him saved. Many times I would caress his neck, whispering
into his ears to encourage him to hold on. He was so weak that he had to stay in the vet’s.
Three days later, when I opened the door of the vet’s, Shep welcomed me with wild
enthusiasm. He wagged his tail from left to right as if to say “Thank you”. He was gaining
strength and improving for the better. Tears filling my eyes, I knew all our efforts were
worthwhile. Soon, the dog recovered from severe sores and I adopted him and took him home.
Once in a while, I would go to that bar with Shep, a drink for myself and a serve of potato chips
for him. What would have happened if I hadn’t stepped out on that stormy night Care and
kindness really made a difference, to both of us.

Here's a list of 4 books that I think are not only helpful but important for today's
2021年下学期第四次月考高三英语试卷 第 2 页,共 10 页
teenagers. These books contain powerful stories and practical concepts for critical
thinking.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
Eventually, every teen will have to come to terms with suffering and loneliness. This
book shows how to approach even the most challenging trials of life. Angelou's memoir
of her childhood is heartbreaking, but the strength of her spirit and her optimism and hope
help readers make sense of life. Maya shows us that it's possible to develop something
inside that can shine brightly, even in the darkest night.
The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
This book highlights a very uncomfortable truth about life :if you want to create
something, you will face many roadblocks. Whether it's naysayer(s 唱反调者),self-doubt,
or laziness, there are lots of things that will keep us from doing what we long to do.
Pressfield helps us easily and clearly identify the enemy of creativity, and outlines a battle
plan to defeat this enemy within.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
This is very nearly the perfect book for teenagers and a classic American novel. The
story is told with such goodness(and warmth and humor) that it's nearly universally
loved. It is so powerfully written that it can actually achieve something unbelievable in its
readers: it can build empathy(共情)for the “other”. And if there's one thing teens need in
today's world, it's more empathy.
Essentialism by Greg Mckeown
Do you ever feel busy but not productive Essentialism shows you how to achieve
the pursuit of less. The pursuit of less allows us to regain control of our own choices so
we can channel our time, energy and effort into making the highest possible contribution
toward the goals and activities that matter.
21.What is the purpose of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
A. To show how to make a battle plan.
B. To show how to rise to challenges in life positively.
C. To explain why being creative is important.
D. To explain why one should stay away from naysayers.
22.Which of the following helps readers improve their work efficiency
A. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings B. The War of Art
C. To Kill a Mockingbird D. Essentialism
23. What do these four books have in common
A.They tell positive stories. B.The target readers are children.
C. They are based on the authors' own life. D.They describe the hardships in life.

The 67-year-old Shandong Province native, Ge Yuxiu, has lived in Qinghai Province
for 51 years. For almost half that time, he has been on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where
2021年下学期第四次月考高三英语试卷 第 3 页,共 10 页
he has devoted his life to photographing and protecting wild animals.
Despite serious heart trouble, Ge is determined to stay on the high-altitude Plateau
and continue to do something to help protect wildlife in the area.
Ge's enthusiasm for photography grew after his photo of soldiers reading news
written on a blackboard was published in Qinghai Daily in 1979. He probably would
never have turned to photographing wild animals without a visit to Bird Island in Qinghai
Lake in 1995 , after he had retired from the army and had begun working in the financial
sector.
Covering less than half a square kilometer , the island is home to over 100 , 000
migratory birds. “I became addicted to the bird kingdom , ” Ge said , adding that he has
so far visited the island more than 200 times to take photos.
He never expected that his attraction to the island would tie his destiny(命运) with
Przewalski’s gazelle(普氏原羚),a relatively small , slender antelope endemic(特有
的) to China.Ge went to the island in late 1997 to take photos of swans when he saw
seven yellowish-brown animals running across the grass-lands , in a line. On hearing one
of his companions shouting “Przewalski's gazelle”, he took out his camera and took
photos of them. He was later told by wildlife conservation experts that he had captured
the world's first image of this kind of antelope.
“ I was so excited to hear that,” he said. His excitement, however, soon gave way to
anxiety after he learned about the animals endangered status. Only found around Qinghai
Lake, there were just 300 of them surviving in the wild at the time. The incident became a
turning point in Ge's photography career , as he decided to devote his efforts to saving the
gazelle and other endangered animals. He often spent time in the wild observing the
gazelle and occasionally visited local herdsmen to learn what they knew about the animal.
Thanks to joint efforts, the population of Przewalski's gazelle has now increased to
about 2700.
24.What are Ge’s photos mainly about
A.Rare plants. B.Beautiful scenery. C. Wild animals. D. Extreme weather .
25. Ge became more enthusiastic about photography after _______.
A . he arrived at the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
B. he visited Bird Island in Qinghai Lake
C.one of his photos was published in Qinghai Daily
D.He learned about the wild animals' endangered status
26.Which of the following words can best describe Ge
A. Honest and silent. B. Persistent and responsible.
C. Outspoken and positive. D. Calm and generous.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. A wildlife guardian B. A photography lover
C. A devoted researcher D. A brave soldier

Running is an excellent form of aerobic exercise. It's a convenient activity that can
be tailored to your lifestyle and goals. Plus ,a regular running routine can reduce your risk
for disease.
Some people like to run on an empty stomach. They often do this in the morning ,
after at least 6 to 8 hours of overnight fasting. It's sometimes called “fasted running”.
When you haven't eaten, your glycogen (糖原) levels are low. Glycogen is the storage
form of carbohydrates (碳水化合物). It's what your body primarily uses for energy.
Fasted running is most known for its amazing effect on fat burn. The idea is that your
body uses more fat as energy because your carbohydrate stores are low.The result is
higher fat burn , or “oxidation (氧化).
In a small 2015 study of 10 male participants , exercise increased fat oxidation over
24 hours when the workout was done before breakfast.
The same scientists found similar results in a small 2017 study with nine female
participants. According to the researchers, this is due to the body's response to low
carbohydrate levels. The lack of carbs (碳水化合物)stimulates genes that control fat
oxidation.
If you're trying to lose weight, fasted exercise may help control your energy intake. In
a small 2016 study, 12 male participants who ran on an empty stomach consumed less
energy over 24 hours.
Another small 2019 study with 12 male participants found that fasted exercise
lowered energy intake over 24 hours. The scientists attributed this to the liver, which also
stores glycogen.
Yet, running on an empty stomach may not be safe for everyone. It might even hold
back your fitness goals.
28.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “fasting” in Paragraph 2
A.Staying up late. B. Lying awake.
C. Not eating anything. D. Accelerating your pace.
29.What is the author's attitude toward fasted running
A . Critical . B . Approving . C . Doubtful . D . Objective .
30.What will probably be discussed in the following paragraph
A . Examples of athletes who practice fasted running .
B . Harmful effects of running on an empty stomach.
C . Further research on the benefits of regular running .
D.Other benefits that fasted running can bring about.
31.What is the author's main purpose in writing this passage
A.To inform the readers of the benefits and drawbacks of fasted running.
B.To advise readers to run on an empty stomach every morning.
C.To raise readers' awareness of the harmful effects of fasted running.
D.To present the research results concerning regular running.

In the waves of human exploration into space ,our brave Chinese people have never
stopped the pace of advancing. In just half a century, China has made remarkable aviation
exploration success. After landing probes (探测器)on the lunar and Martian surfaces ,
China has begun to set its exploratory sights on the core of our solar system—the sun.
Named Xihe after the sun goddess in ancient Chinese mythology(神话) , the
508-kilogram Chinese H-Alpha Solar Explorer satellite was launched on Oct. 14 from the
Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi province. It then entered a sun-synchronous
orbit about 517 kilometers above Earth.
The spacecraft is China's first space-based solar telescope and is designed to work
for at least three years , Wang Wei , project manager of the satellite , told China Daily.
Its scientific payload (有效载荷)is an H-alpha imaging spectrograph (成像光谱
仪). The H-alpha band is one of the best spectral lines to study solar activity, according to
the Global Times. “The instrument is able to observe and record changes in the sun's
physical elements like its temperature and speed, facilitating scientists' studies about the
dynamics and physics during a solar eruption," Wang told China Daily.
Several Chinese satellites, such as the Fengyun 3E meteorological(气象的)satellite,
have carried equipment that can collect solar data, but Xihe is the first one dedicated to
solar observation.
“Since solar activity has many effects on life on Earth, it is important for mankind to
study the sun,” Zhao Jian, a senior official at the China National Space Administration,
told China Daily.
Since the 1960s, NASA has sent dozens of solar orbiters to circle the sun, and in 2004,
the Genesis spacecraft returned a sample of solar wind. The most recently launched solar
mission was Parker Solar Probe in 2018. Europe and Japan also have solar missions,
according to the South China Morning Post.
“Our country is ranked No. 2 in the world in terms of published research papers on
solar observations, but all of the satellite-generated data used by our scientists are from
foreign spacecraft,” Zhao told China Daily. “Xihe will put an end to the dependence on
foreign satellites, and we will share its products with researchers around the world.”
32.What do we know about Xihe
A. It is named after an ancient Chinese scientist.
B. It is the world's first solar observation satellite.
C. It is expected to work for five years.
D. It is a half-ton scientific research satellite.
33.What is the main task of Xihe according to the text
A. To study how solar activity affects life on Earth.
B. To observe other satellites around the sun.
C. To monitor changes in the sun's physical elements.
D.To adjust the temperature and speed of the sun.
2021年下学期第四次月考高三英语试卷 第 6 页,共 10 页
34.Why is it essential to do research on the sun
A. Our reliance on foreign satellites will come to an end.
B. Creatures on Earth would suffer with little knowledge about solar activity.
C. Solar eruptions may bring human beings disasters.
D. It helps scientists learn more about solar history.
35.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The development of China's space exploration.
B. The advantages of the Xihe satellite.
C.The significance of the Xihe mission.
D. The ways scientists collect satellite-generated data.

Bakedin staff put in nine-and-a-half-hours on the four days they are at work. 39. ___
“When we are together, we just find that we're more productive. We get more done this
way, because we don't get that tired, Friday feeling.”
Many firms and countries have started experimenting with four-day, rather than
five-day weeks.40_______Bakedin is in the food industry, which has a very high
turn-over rate for staff. “Every year, some 30% of employees in the food industry leave
their jobs,” says Joe. “But at Bakedin, our staff turnover rate is under 5%. So a four-day
week is an excellent way of keeping staff loyal.”
A. He figured it was his business.
B. He ran the company as a weekend passion.
C. There are other benefits of putting staff on a four-day week.

短文。
A freezing downpour washed the street in front of the small-town bar. I sat gazing
into the watery darkness, alone as usual. I had been in that old bar for half an hour,
quietly drinking, when my thoughtful eyes finally focused on a medium-sized lump (一团)
in a puddle (水洼) a hundred feet away. For another ten minutes, I looked out through the
window trying to decide if the lump was an animal or just something.
The night before, a German dog named Shep had come into the bar begging for
potato chips. He was starving and just the size of the lump in the puddle. Why should a
dog lie in a cold puddle in the freezing rain I asked myself. The answer was simple:
Either it wasn’t a dog, or it was, he was too weak to get up.
The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers. I didn’t want to
go out in the storm. Hey, it wasn’t my dog. It was just a stray on a cold rainy night, a
lonely drifter (流浪者). So was I, I thought, as I tossed (扔) down what was left of my
drink and headed out the door.
He was lying in the three inches of water. When I touched him, he didn’t move. I
thought he was dead. I put my hands around his chest and raised him to his feet. He stood
unsteadily, and his head hung like a weight at the end of his neck. His floppy ears were
just hairless pieces of flesh dotted with open sores (伤口).
“Come on, Shep,” I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the
cold cement and closed his eyes. A block away I could see the lights of a late-night
convenience store. It was still open. I bought three cans of dog food and fed him. He
couldn’t swallow but poorly look at me. He was dying!
