Grandma was going to turn eighty-two on Friday. I heard Mom ordering a cake from the bakery over the phone. “Don’t put any icing on it,” she said, “Just a plain angel cake.” Angel cake with fresh strawberries was her favorite. So Mum was ready.
That afternoon when Dad came home, he showed me the phone he had bought for Grandma. “It has speed-dialing,” he said. “She won’t have to push so many buttons when she calls the doctor’s office or her sister.” Dad looked pleased. “Her fingers are so stiff with arthritis (关节炎) that the phone seems a good idea.”
But what about me Here I was with only one dollar in my pocket and one night to think of a gift. Even though Mom always insisted that “it’s the thought that counts,” I had a big problem. My mind was even more empty of ideas than my wallet was empty of money.
When I have a problem, it sometimes helps to shoot a few baskets in the driveway. Dribble, shoot, rebound.
For a while I just played without even trying to think. I began to remember back before Granddad died, when we used to visit them in Kentucky, Granddad showed me how to do a jump shot. Thinking about Granddad made me sigh. Grandma’s life was a lot happier when he was alive.Swish! I’d made two in a row.
Suddenly, I remembered a green glass dish in the shape of a leaf that Grandma used to keep on a table back in Kentucky. It was always full of those red-and-white-striped peppermint candies. I hadn’t thought of that dish for a long time. Maybe it was lost or broken when Dad rented the truck and brought Grandma and the belongings to Ohio.
Just thinking about that candy dish made me taste the peppermint slowly dissolving on my tongue. I could almost hear Grandma saying,“Help yourself to a piece of peppermint, Burt.” That voice had a smile behind it. It was a voice I hadn’t heard for a long time.
Aha! I took one last shot, then dribbled to the back door, ran up the steps two at a time, and grabbed my wallet.

The Torch Festival(火把节) is a traditional festival which is celebrated among some ethnic groups in southwestern China, such as the Yi,Bai,Hani,Lisu, and Lahu, etc. It usually falls on the 24th or 25th of June, with three days of celebrations. The festival came from worship(崇拜) of fire by ancestors(祖先).For some ethnic groups,it’s a tradition in the festival for elders to share farming experience with young people and educate them about taking care of crops.

In a horse race of the Yi people in Yunnan, torches are used to form hurdles for riders to get through. The Hani people in Yunnan traditionally tie fruits to torches with strings. When the strings are broken after the torches are lit, people struggle for the fruits for good luck.

ampuses. Around 3 per cent of American students have taken “study drugs” at least once, and the higher-ranking the university, the more common it is.
Relatively speaking, prescriptions(处方)come cheap on campus. One Harvard undergraduate had initially turned up to the campus health center with depression. The psychiatrist(精神科医生)gave him a quick questionnaire, decided he had ADHD(多动症)and gave him Adderall, which he now uses almost daily. Another Harvard student, having suffered a sports-related head injury, approached a campus psychiatrist and was prescribed 20 mg of Adderall. Within weeks, he was taking as much as 200 mg a day (ten times the standard dose). He soon dropped out of school. After that, it was drink, hard drugs and yet more Adderall. Having gone through rehab(戒瘾康复), he’s now back at Harvard-five years older than his peers - and determined to get his degree.
One thing you can do after getting a prescription is “sell it to your friends who haven't been so well trained in the theatre to get themselves a diagnosis" , an Ivy League undergraduate explains. “You make some money and have more fun and everyone benefits.” Many students think Adderall helps them focus, sit still and finish their work. Demand is always highest around finals, which is why it's sensible to get orders early.
Psychiatrist Dr.Allen Frances, who helped shape the American Psychiatric Association's definition of ADHD in the 1990s, says that while Adderall can be helpful in certain circumstances, with many patients, the clinically appropriate thing to tell them is "there's not a lot wrong with you, just get on with your life".
9. What can we infer about many campus prescriptions for Adderall
A. They are powerful. B. They are illegal.
C. They are standard. D. They are inappropriate.
10. Why do students buy prescriptions for Adderall from their peers
A. It rids them of mental diseases.
B. It brings them financial benefits.
C. It gets them better prepared for exams.
D. It helps them improve their stage performance.
11. What does Dr.Allen Frances suggest psychiatrists do
A.Evaluate Adderall's harm. B. Recognize ADHD's symptoms.
C. Avoid over-prescription of Adderall. D. Expand patients'knowledge of Adderall.
12. What is the text mainly about
A. The magic power of Adderall. B. The trend of taking a “study drug”.
C.The widespread ignorance of ADHD. D. The disadvantage of college health care.

4.主旨大意题。根据第三段“But what about me Here I was with only one dollar in my pocket and one night to think of a gift. Even though Mom always insisted that “it’s the thought that counts,”(但是我呢 我只有一美元在我的口袋和一个晚上想一件礼物。尽管妈妈总是坚持认为“心意才是最重要的”,)”可知作者想要给奶奶买礼物,但是钱不够,妈妈的观点是“心意是最重要的”,结合下文作者想了很久才想到带着美好记忆的礼物,可知“心意才是最重要的”适合做本文的标题,故选C。
