In the sport of track and field, athletes compete not only with one another but against themselves, and with each race they try to achieve a new personal best.
For one Nebraska teen running in what would likely be his final cross-country outing before graduating from high school, Brandon Schutt’s personal best turned out not to be about marking the fastest time but displaying the biggest heart. A mile into the 3.1-mile race, however, Schutt realized he wasn’t going to be able to keep up the necessary drive. Rather than risk injury, he slowed to a comfortable pace that would allow him to simply enjoy the moment and the day.
Meanwhile, Omaha Burke High School student Blake Cerveny was running a very different kind of race. Aiming to beat his own personal record, after a fast start, he continued to push himself hard. With less than 400 meters to go, Cerveny’s legs cramped(抽筋)up and failed him. Determined to finish, Cerveny rose from the ground and continued on, only to fall again after another 150 meters... and again, he got up and started running. This time he’d made it only 25 meters more before going down. But he wasn’t done yet. A less 100 meters from the finish line, he lay curled on the ground. His legs had simply given out.
Before Cerveny’s dad could reach his son, another runner—Brandon Schutt—was at his side to offer a helping hand. His first attempt to get Cerveny up failed, but like Cerveny, he refused to quit, too. With a second pull, Cerveny was on his feet.
At a measured jog, with Cerveny holding Schutt for support and Schutt helping Cerveny maintain balance, the two completed the final 75 meters of the course together. Schutt even made sure the injured runner crossed the finish line first, securing his opponent a faster time. Although Cerveny was automatically disqualified for having received help, Schutt’s time for the race would stand.
24. What can we learn about Schutt at the beginning of the running
A. He was confident to win the first place.
B. He was nervous about the coming graduation.
C. He was unpleased with the annoying surroundings.
D. He was clear about his own strengths and weaknesses.
25. Why did Cerveny take part in the competition
A. To break his own running record.
B. To show his difference from others.
C. To be admitted into the national team.
D. To turn his father’s dream into reality.
26. What happened to Cerveny during the running
A. He helped Schutt finish the race.
B. He had the first fall at 150 meters.
C. He injured his own arms because of the falls.
D. He finally finished the race faster than Schutt.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. Sportsmanship Is What We Should Respect
B. Hero Runner Carries Competitor To Safe Place
C. Runners Meet Again After Crossing Finish Line Together
D. Teen Runner Helps Competitor Finish Race After He Fell Down
C
As the world starts to become increasingly aware of the dirty carbon footprint left behind by airplane travel, could it be time to bring back to the airship Hybrid Air Vehicles, a UK-based company, has recently displayed a new concept design of their around 100-passenger airships that hopes to revolutionize city tripping, all while reducing carbon emissions(排放). The images of the flashy inside parts are just an ambitious plan for the moment, but the company argues the airship would be well-suited to city-to-city trips.
A journey by airship would take slightly longer than one by airplane. For example, a flight from Liverpool to Belfast across the Irish Sea is approximately 4 hours and 24 minutes, check-in and security time included, while the airship will take 5 hours and 20 minutes in theory. However, the payoff comes in the amount of carbon dioxide released—67. 75 kilograms(149. 36 pounds)of carbon emissions per passenger by plane, compared to 4. 75 kilograms(10.47 pounds)per passenger by airship.
The company claims their standard Airlander 10 model can now complete journeys with a total of a 75 percent reduction in emissions compared to conventional aircrafts. They eventually hope to introduce a hybrid-electric(混合电能的)model by 2025, which would reduce emissions by 90 percent, then a totally electric model by 2030 that would be a zero-emissions aircraft.
In a bid to attract air travel enthusiasts, the company also hopes to make the experience more pleasurable than the typical journey of sticky seats and minimal legroom. “For many decades flying from A to B has meant sitting in a metal tube with tiny windows—a necessity but not always a pleasure. On Airlander, the whole experience is pleasant, even enjoyable,” George Land, Commercial Business Development Director at Hybrid Air Vehicles, said in a recent statement.
28. What is the new airship designed for
A. Trips with fewer passengers. B. Reducing the use of carbon.
C. Traveling specially between cities. D. The lowest cost of trips for passengers.
29. Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 2
A. To highlight the speed of the airplane.
B. To stress the disadvantages of the new airship.
C. To indicate the potential market of the new airship.
D. To present the positive effect of the new airship on the environment.
30. What is the plan of the company for the new airship
A. Producing a fully electric model by 2030.
B. Producing a hybrid-electric model by 2030.
C. Completing the standard Airlander 10 model by 2025.
D. Putting the standard Airlander 10 model into service by 2025.
31. What does George Land think of the traditional airplane
A. It’s much safer. B. Its space is too narrow.
C. Its seats are too hard. D. Its atmosphere is more pleasant.
D
As a middle schooler, one of my life goals was the Presidential Fitness Award—an honor given to those who passed a series of gym-class tests that included doing a number of pull ups, running a mile, and, among other things, the sit and reach(another version of toe touching). That’s where things went wrong for me. I could never reach quite far enough.
Toe touching is an easy way to begin or end any sort of workout. For most people, it is among the easiest stretching exercises to do. But for me(and many of my classmates)it’s complete suffering. Why “The two biggest factors are the flexibility of your hamstrings(腿筋)and the range of motion of your hip(髋)joints,” says Jeffrey Jenkins, a physiologist at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. “But another big factor is the relative length of your arms and your torso(躯干)to your legs, which unfortunately can’t be changed.”
Jenkins says that although there are some unjust aspects, overall the toe touch is not the worst measure of flexibility. But if you are flexibility clumsy like me, there are some things you can do to improve the flexibility of the body you have. Whenever you stretch them, your muscles contract, tighten, and resist the force to be stretched, resulting in that annoyingly painful feeling that most of us get when we first reach down to touch our toes or attempt to stretch other muscles. However, Jenkins says, if you are patient, this too shall pass.
If you hold the stretch for a minimum of six seconds, you can actually overcome the reflex(反射). In fact, Jenkins says, there’s some evidence that holding still stretches for 30 seconds results in greater improvement in flexibility than holding it for 15 seconds, and just as much improvement as 60 seconds. But for some people, the pain that accompanies those sixty seconds is just too severe. If you can get past that pain, then you can probably improve your flexibility. However, Jenkins cautions against tolerating too much pain: you could be tearing a muscle.
32. What can be inferred about the author from the text
A. He is a P.E. teacher in a junior school.
B. He improved a version of toe touching.
C. He can’t pass the tests of the Presidential Fitness Award.
D. He was envied by his classmates for his academical achievements.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. How we can practice touching toes.
B. Why some people can’t touch their toes.
C. What is the most important to an athlete.
D. Why people begin and end exercises by touching toes.
34. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Muscle pain. B. Clumsy moves.
C. Body flexibility. D. Attempt to stretch.
35. When we practice toe touching, Jenkins warn us _________.
A. to seek professional help
B. not to stand the severe pain beyond limit
C. to hold the still stretch for at least 15 seconds
D. not to quit or focus on the pain from the muscles
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How To Deal With People Who Strongly Disagree With You
In what seems like an ever-shrinking world, we are constantly being exposed to different ideas. There is no way you will agree with every person who crosses your path. Disagreement doesn’t always need to be unpleasant, and in some cases, it can even be educational.
Stay calm.
Look at the disagreement as a discussion to exchange points of view, rather than an argument to win. 36 . As soon as things become heated and emotional(情绪化的), people become more deep-seated in their corners and be less likely to agree on anything.
37 .
You may find it helpful to keep a civil relationship by pointing out that your disagreement is not person-based but issue-based. 38 . It will prevent both of you from getting emotional. You could say, “John, I want to say my disagreement on how you handled this project isn’t about your work. You’re a hard worker and I value your contribution to the company. I do feel like you took this report in the wrong direction, and I wanted to get your point of view. “
Use facts instead of emotions.
An emotional argument is a weak argument. “ 39 ” is based on a feeling and not a fact. “I don’t like him because he bullied(欺负)me on three separate occasions” is concrete and helps you further your argument.
Ensure you are speaking only for yourself.
40 . Even if you know others in your community agree with you, the use of “we” may feel that your opponent feels ganged(联合)up against.
A. Try to take it personally
B. I’m not defending my faith to you
C. I don’t like him because he’s mean
D. Resist the urge to raise your voice
E. Try to convey this during your discussion
F. Acknowledge you value the person, but just disagree on ideas
G. When you argue your opinion, make sure you are using “T”, not “we”
