IQissetataround20yearsoldandlatereffortwillnotimproveitmuch,recentresearchfinds.Thecomplexityofpeople’sjobs,highereducation,socializingandreadingallprobablyhavelittleeffectoncognitive(认知的)ability.
Naturally,theseactivitieshavemanyotherbenefits,butlittleinfluenceonIQ.However,educationisparticularlyimportantatanearlyagewhenthebrainisstilldeveloping.Byearlyadulthood,though,mostpeople’sIQhassettleddown.
WhilesomestudieshavesuggestedthatcognitiveactivitiesinlaterlifecanimproveIQ,ProfessorWilliamKremen,thestudy’sfirstauthor,thinksotherwise,“Thefindingssuggestthattheimpactofeducation,occupationalcomplexityandparticipationincognitiveactivitiesonlaterlifecognitivefunctionlikelyreflectstheopposite.Inother words,theyarelargelytheresultsofyoungadultintellectual(智力的)capacity.”
Thestudyincluded1,009mennowintheir50sand60swhoseIQwasassessedwhentheywerearound20-years-old.Theyweregiventestsofabstractreasoning,verbalfluencyandmemory,alongwithothercognitivemeasures.
Theresultsshowedthatmostofthedifferencebetweenthemen’sIQsinmid-lifewasexplained bythedifferencebetweenthemataround20-years-old.Incomparison,thecomplexityofthejobtheyhad,theintellectualactivitiestheyengagedin,andtheireducationinthemeantimehardlyhadanyeffectontheirIQ.BrainscansalsoshowedthatIQatage20 wasassociatedwiththesurfaceareaofthecerebralcortex,whichisthebrain’sgraymatter,thepartthatperformsthehigherfunctionsofthinking,perceivingandlanguage.
