Mandela became President in South Africa's historic 1994 election. After that, he often looked to Walter Sisulu, one of his closest friends for more than sixty years, for guidance. Sisulu was in many ways as important as Mandela in the fight against South Africa's racist system.
In 1944, the two, along with the late Oliver Tambo, founded the ANC Youth League(ANCYL). The ANCYL favoured a more militant way to lead the movement against the government. They soon took over the ANC, with Sisulu serving as its secretary general from 1949 to 1954. In 1964, he, Mandela and other top ANC leaders were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Sisulu was always calm and patient after he was released. The day after his release on Oct 15, 1989, Sisulu said to reporters, "It was not possible to lose hope because the spirit of the people outside was too great." Mandela's release came four months later.
Sisulu was born in 1912. Unlike Mandela, whose father was a chief, Sisulu was the child of a black maid and a white worker. His father left the family when Sisulu was small.
He was educated for a while at a local school, but left when he was 15 to support his family. He took whatever jobs he could, and continued to learn on his own. In 1940, he joined the ANC and got Mandela to join it a year later.
"Our paths first met in 1941. During the past 62 years, our lives have been closely connected. We shared the joy of living, and the pain. We walked side by side through the valley of death. Together we enjoyed the taste of freedom," Mandela said after Sisulu died on May 5th, 2003. "A part of me is gone."
1. In what way was Sisulu similar to Mandela
A. He also supported peaceful means. B. He also ran for the 1994 election.
C. He was also a founder of the ANC. D. He was also a great freedom fighter.
2. What made Sisulu feel hopeful about the future
A. Mandela's release. B. The people's power.
C. The prisoners' high spirits. D. Reporters' encouragement.
3. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Mandela's lifelong friendship with Sisulu. B. Mandela's important influence on Sisulu.
C. Mandela's hard efforts to win freedom. D. Mandela's opinions on Sisulu's life.
4. What is the purpose of the text
A. To compare Sisulu with Mandela. B. To show the greatness of Mandela.
C. To explain the history of the ANCYL. D. To describe Sisulu's life and achievements.

My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether they were social or academic. Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School. "Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you," said my parents.
Up until the junior year I did not realize my capabilities(能力) as a student. Being in the IB programme, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this "little" piece of information, I walked into my junior year, scared of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining(下降) and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes! I could not believe it—I did not want to believe it. I tried my best to get better grades myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions that year. I was heartbroken. I realized that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast.
Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to As and Bs. I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself. By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honour roll twice, and I was receiving awards from speeches and debates competitions.
Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me. I am proud to be a Southside Tiger.

2. How did the writer feel when she walked into her junior year
A. Excited. B. Worried. C. Curious. D. Uninterested.
3. Why was the writer's study worse and worse
A. She didn't work hard enough. B. No one would like to help her.
C. She missed many important speeches. D. She didn't ask others for help because of her pride.
4. What important lesson has the writer learnt at Southside High School
A. Students should better learn about life. B. Students should face challenges bravely.
C. Students should be proud of their schools. D. Students should be careful in choosing schools.
D
How do you usually spend your spare time Many people choose to be couch potatoes, but not Luo Han, a 9-year-old from Changsha, Hunan.
Luo Han completes at least two hours of outdoor activities every day and has raised a wave of discussions online. Although he is in primary school, he has already mastered sports like kayaking and paddling. His aptitude for outdoor sports is from his father Luo Ge, who actively encourages him to enjoy nature, rather than focusing only on his learning. After noticing that Luo Han did not go out for enough exercise after school, his father took him to do outdoor activities every day.
Many applauded them. "Exercise can ease brain fog and improve memory. Many students feel stressed about schoolwork, so outdoor activities can help us keep our moods uplifted and improve our learning efficiency," said Liu Yu, 18, a university freshman. Wang Tao, a parent of a 16-year-old, showed her support for the father. "It's more than a way to relax. It's a training of willpower," she said. Her son He Xin, from Hefei Thomas School, Anhui, is a fan of outdoor sports. Although facing increasing pressure in his studies, he has joined the school's athletic programmes.
However, some have also expressed their concerns. "Two hours isn't too much for a 9-year-old, but it might be difficult for high school students to guarantee this block of time when school becomes more demanding," said Huang Xi, 16, from Liyang High School of Jiangsu Province.
Ms Zhu, who has a daughter in middle school, also agreed that two hours is too much for the majority of parents, especially on weekdays. "When I am off-duty, I need to do housework. After my daughter finishes her homework, she prefers to watch TV. Neither of us would think of going outside for exercise," Zhu said.
Other parents are concerned about the safety of outdoor activities. Zhang Zhijin has a son in high school. "Sometimes, teenagers can do crazy and risky things. We worry about accidents," Zhang said.
1. What can we learn from the passage
A. Outdoor playing is only good for relaxation.

It was a very hot afternoon. My friend Leah and I were waiting for the rush hour train. We were tired and couldn't wait to get back to the place where we were living.
When the train arrived, we got into the second carriage from the front. The air-conditioning wasn't working at the rear(后部), so the front was particularly crowded that day. I sat by the window admiring the changing landscape.
Suddenly we felt enormous pressure pushing us backwards into our seats. The windows broke into tiny pieces and dust flew around violently. I could barely open my eyes.
The train was suffering from a crash, and it didn't feel as if it were going to stop. I thought I would be dead. I thought about my husband Guy, who was supposed to receive the news first. I thought of my dear father and other family members, wondering how each would deal with my death.
Voices began to break through my thoughts. People were anxious. Strangely, I was totally calm. I wasn't panicking; my heart wasn't even beating fast. When the train finally stopped, we slowly stood up, pushing off the table that had fallen onto us; others stayed in their seats and many were injured and covered in blood. I could hear screaming. A soldier pushed the damaged door open for us to escape.
Our carriage had run out of rails and we were halfway home. We had a lot of blood on us and I searched my body for wounds, but I didn't find any. My knees felt painful and my hips were black and blue, and Leah had her hand cut when jumping off the train, but that wasn't serious.
Helicopters landed and we saw soldiers running in and out. All around us were ambulances(救护车) and people lying on the ground. Everyone was shouting for help. I rang Guy, who was very calm and said he would come and get us. Seeing all these brought me great emotional hurt.
Paragraph 1:
It was almost dark by the time we found Guy and he drove us home.

答案:①themselves ②simply ③lifting ④there ⑤to ⑥better ⑦an ⑧that ⑨shared ⑩works
④there exists... 故填there。
故填to。
故填that。

Even now, no one knows why it happened.
