I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”of directions every time I ask “ How can I get to the post office ”
Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks(地标)in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “ Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “ Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distance in time, not miles. “ How far away is the post office ” you ask. “ Oh,” they answer, “ it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “ Yes, but how many miles is it ” They don’t know.
It’s true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation A New Yorker might say, “ Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “ I don't know”. People in Yucatan believe that “I don't know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
4.When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually _______ .
A.describe the place carefully B.show him a map of the place
C.tell him the names of the streets D.refer to recognizable buildings and places
5.What is the place where people measure distance in time

6.People inYucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ________ .
A.in order to save time B.as a test C.so as to be polite D.for fun
7.What can we infer from the text
A.It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.
B.It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.
C.People have similar understanding of politeness.
D.New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

Can women be good astronauts To figure it out, six Russian women will be sent into a space simulator(模拟器) for eight days to carry out a unique experiment.
“It’s interesting for us to see what is special about the way they communicate with each other,”said Sergei Ponomaryov, the experiment’s leader.
“ It will be particularly interesting in terms of psychology,” said Igor Ushakov, director of Moscow’s Institute of Biomedical Problems. “I’d like to wish you a lack of conflicts, even though they say that in one kitchen, two housewives find it hard to live together,” he added.

In 1963, Russia sent the first woman into space, Valentina Tereshkova, but has lagged behind (落后) since then. Several years ago it sent its fourth female astronaut into space, Yelena Serova. Serova complained of a great deal of media interest in how she would wash her hair aboard the International Space Station, pointing out that male astronauts did not face the same line of questioning.
Like other astronauts on the International Space Station, the women will have no shower, washing with wet wipes instead. They plan to spend their one and a half hours per day of free time watching films, reading and playing board games.Team leader Yelena Luchnitskaya said she expected the women to deal with any conflict.

According to a survey, the waste of food on the dining table occupies 10% of the total grain output. Last week Meituan co-published a proposal with a number of business organizations, calling on restaurants to stop food waste and help develop new eating habits for customers. “Restaurants should use official accounts on social media and live-streaming to promote and advocate food-saving actions,” the proposal said.
Meituan and the organizations are advocating that merchants offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to help them avoid food waste due to misleading information.
Catering associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to remove food waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an “N-1” ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people. More food is only brought to the table if required. It has inspired people to rethink their relationship with food and waste.
On Friday, the China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Ele. me, a food delivery platform, to launch a “ half-dish plan", encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions. Besides, customers are encouraged to take their leftovers home.
To reduce food waste on social media platforms, some popular video platforms have stepped up content reviews of food-related live streams and implemented regulation of online eating shows. Now, if users search certain keywords, such as “eating show" or “competitive eaters", a cautionary message pops up to remind them to cherish food and keep a reasonable diet.
12. What is the purpose of the proposal mentioned in the passage
A. To monitor food sales on social media and live-streaming.
B. To expand the business and competitive ability of Meituan.
C. To encourage restaurants to take measures to reduce food waste.
D. To promote cooperation between Meituan and other organizations.

C. Following some competitive eaters. D. Leaving their leftovers in the restaurant.
15. What does the underlined phrase “pops up” in the last paragraph mean
A. Appears unexpectedly. B. Spreads widely. C. Moves quickly. D. Fades slowly.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Secret codes (密码) keep messages private. Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.
People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 16.Code breaking never lags (落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography.
There are three main types of cryptography. 17.For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” spell out the hidden message “Meet me.”
18.You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitute a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.”
A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 19.For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.” 20.However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently.
A.It is very hard to break a code without the code book.
B.In any language, some letters are used more than others.
C.Only people who know the keyword can read the message.
D.As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them.
E.You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out.
F.With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words.
G.Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.

书面表达(满分25分)
Hello Everyone! I'm Li Hua from Senior 3. My topic today is “Say no to smartphones at school.”
Although the smartphone plays an important role in people's daily life, it is also a double-edged sword. Inappropriate use of it may bring some downsides for us students.
Some students with a smartphone get so addicted that they are hugely impacted. First, smartphones will distract their attention in class, thus, their school work can be seriously affected. Besides, some students even use the phones till late into the night, which can cause some health problems such as bad eyesight and abnormal sleep patterns. Finally, it may compromise their face- to- face communication with others.
Therefore, I strongly advocate that students should be prohibited from carrying smartphones to school. Let's say No to smartphones at school.
That's all. Thank you for listening!
