动词–ing 形式作表语、定语和宾补
动词–ing 形式作表语
1.表示抽象的一般性行为,来说明主语的内容,与主语通常为同一概念,表语和主语常可互换。
E.g Her job was washing clothes.(=Washing clothes was her job.)
2.表示主语的某种性质或特征,这时通常看作形容词,不可与主语互换。
E.g The film is very interesting.
What he said is moving.
二、 动词–ing 形式作定语
The –ing form作定语时表示该动作正在进行。单个The –ing form作定语通常放在被修饰词的前面。 The –ing form短语作定语则放在被修饰词之后。如:
The rising sun looks very beautiful. 冉冉升起的太阳看上去很美。
若被修饰词与The –ing form是被动关系时,须用The –ing form的被动式(being done)作定语。如:
The song being broadcast is very popular with the young students. 正在播放的歌曲深受青年学生的欢迎。
注意The –ing form作定语与所修饰的名词有逻辑上的主谓关系,或表示作用与用途。如:
Let sleeping dogs lie. 别招惹麻烦。(The –ing form相当于定语从句 which are sleeping)
I think some sleeping pills may help you. 我想安眠药可以助你入睡。(The –ing form表示用途,相当于pills for sleeping)
动词–ing 形式作宾补
动词–ing 形式作宾补时,与宾语之间是主谓关系,即宾语是逻辑上的主语。它主要在以下两类动词后做宾补。
表示感觉和心理状态的动词,如see, hear, feel, smell, watch, find, listen to, look at, notice, observe等。
E.g I saw the naughty boy hitting the dog.
I notice a stranger sliding into her office.
注:在see, hear, feel, smell, watch等感官动词后,既可用动词–ing 形式作宾补,也可用省to的不定式作宾补。用动词–ing 形式时,表示动作正在进行,用省to的不定式作宾补,表示动作从开始到结束的全过程。
E.g I saw a boy getting on the bus.(表示动作正在进行)
I saw a boy get on the bus.(表示动作完成)
2.表示“指使”等意义的动词,如have, set, keep, leave, get等
E.g He keep the water running.
The joke set her crying.
