Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.
Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly On the one hand, the elephants’ main lake, their only water source (来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.
To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.
However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephant were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.
Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations (组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level. The local people have learned to live peacefully with the elephants, one of the wildlife treasures in the world.

When people discover that I work as a film and TV extra (临时演员), they always ask me the same questions: Emily, is it easy to get work Isn't it boring Do you get to meet famous actors Does it pay well My answers are pretty standard as well: Yes, sometimes, once in a while, and… kind of. The life of an extra is both more interesting and more boring than you might imagine.
Extras, who play the people in crowds, on streets, or in the background of indoors scenes, can come from all walks of life. Unlike many extras, I'm a trained actor. I do get real speaking roles, but work can be hard to come by if you're not a popular star. I'm registered (注册) with an agency that deals only with extras, so I get calls all the time. The agency explains who I'll be someone in a crowd, a member of a jury, a clerk and tells me where to go. Call time is usually bright and early, so I try to get to bed at a reasonable hour.
Sometimes being an extra is a "hurry up and wait" job. In my first extra role, I was one of a group of office workers who come out of a building just as a car explodes (爆炸) in the street. We waited for hours for the scene to be shot, and then went in and out of the building about fifty times, trying to act terrified by an explosion which was not real. Then we had lunch, changed clothes, and spent the afternoons as customers in a department store.
It may sound like I don’t enjoy the work, but I do. Being part of the background in a convincing (令人信服的) way is challenging, and being on a film or TV set is always fascinating. A lot of famous actors don't even notice the extras, but the ones who do make the job a lot of fun for everyone. As for the money, it's nothing compared to what the big actors make, but it pretty much pays the bills. And, as a bonus, I've beaten my high scores on all my phone games, thanks to all the time I spend sitting around, waiting for something to happen.
41. Emily gives standard answers because ______.
A. she is proud of her job B. she wants to hide her feelings
C. she thinks it's unnecessary to explain D. they are the exact answers to the questions
42. What does Emily think of her job
A. Busy. B. Enjoyable. C. Fashionable. D. Easy.
43. In line 21, another way to say as a bonus would be ______.
A. above expectation B. as a result C. in general D. after all
44. According to the passage, _____.
A. the famous actors look down upon the extras
B. being an extra is always a "hurry up and wait" job
C. Emily tells the truth about being a film and TV extra
D. those who want to be film or TV extras must be trained
45. We can infer that Emily ______.
A. often pays the bills for others B. sometimes has to get up very early
C. has beaten all the phone game players D. was in face of danger in her first extra role

Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly(蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis(蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle(挣扎;奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make the fly.
When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.
56. From the story we know that the butterfly can’t fly because ________.
A. it gets out by itself B. the man feels sorry for it

A. overcome the difficulties B. take up business early
C. become the leaders of tomorrow D. sell clothes from door to door
58. The meaning of the underlined word “mature” in the passage is “________”.
A. wake up B. give up C. grow up D. bring up

There's much to see under the sea, but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are, You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely missing it.
Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It's just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!
What's more, in deeper water, colors just don't seem as bright. In fact, it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths(波长)of light that are reflected(反射)from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.
Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Lets take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost( 鬼怪) ! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again!
You miss the object underwater when you want to touch it because .
A.your eyesight is quite poor B. you are not quick enough
C.it is not as close as it seems D.it disappears very quickly
62. The example o the wet suit is used to explain the change of of an object underwater.
A. the size B. the color C. the position D. the weight

Has anyone ever told you that eating carrots will help you see in the dark This is just one of many incorrect beliefs you may have heard. Below, TEENS has picked out scientific explanations for three mistakes that people make about their eyes. Let's take a look.
Can eating carrots improve your eyesight
Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which helps the eyes to turn light into information for your brain. This allows people to see in darker places. However, eating more carrots won't help you see better. A certain minimum amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman vision.
If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too
Myopia(近视)can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopic, there's a 33 to 60 percent chance that their child will be. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it's down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopic parents. So if your eyesight is bad, your children might still have good vision.
Do color blind people see the world in black and white
Color blindness doesn't usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. They usually can't tell certain colors apart, especially green and red. Another commonly confused pair of colors is yellow and blue. Our eyes have cone cells(视锥细胞)that sense different wavelengths of light. If these cells don't work properly, color blindness occurs. There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only color blind in low light. However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is shades of gray.
1. According to the article, eating carrots .
A. stops the brain from seeing B. doesn't help you see better at all
C. will help you see clearly in the dark D. is good for your eyes to some degree
2. If both parents have myopia, their child's chance of having good eyesight is .
A. 40-67% B. 33-60% C. 23-40 D. 6-15%
3. The underline word "occurs" in this passage probably means .
A. 恶化 B. 发生 C. 改善 D. 加深
4. What is the cause of color blindness according to the text
A.Watching movies for too long. B. Getting too little exercise.
C. Cone cells not working properly. D. Changes in the wavelength of light.
5. What is the purpose of the article

Do you want to live another 100 years or more Some experts say that scientific advances will one day enable humans to last tens of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
"I think we are knocking at the door of immortality(永生), "said Michael Zey,a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future."I think by 2075 we will see it and that's a conservative estimate(保守的估计)."
At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology(纳米技术)make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past." There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years," he said." Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 200 or 300 or 500 years."
However, many scientists who study in ageing are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to last past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live." It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life " said Leonard Pooh, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology Centre." Since last December, there have been lots of COVID-19(新冠肺炎)cases both in and out of China. It's not the first time for humans to fight with Viruses. Viruses have brought big trouble to humans, because they may cause widespread disease and death.
What are they Viruses are considered to be non-living organisms(有机物). They can infect animals, plants and humans, making them sick. They have materials like DNA and are protected by a kind of special skin.
Viruses can't reproduce(繁殖)on their own. Instead, they break in the cells(细胞)of living organisms to reproduce, spread and take over. But the basic question is, " Where did viruses first come from " Until now, no clear explanation for this question. " It is difficult to find out where viruses first came from," Ed Rybicki, a virologist at the university of Cape Town in South Africa, told Scientific American, " because viruses don't leave fossils(化石)and because it is difficult to study the ways they use to make copies of themselves within the cells they've broken in." Understanding where they came from means fully understanding the history of their hosts(宿主)-not only humans, but also plants and other animals, which is a difficult task, says Nature.
UK physicist Isaac Newton once said," Nature is pleased with simplicity and nature is no dummy(傻子)." Indeed, mother nature can provide almost everything humans need if we follow her rules. But if we break the rules, she is likely to be cruel and mad at us. It is believed that the outbreak of COVID-19 is a good example. Humans try to change mother nature. They use more land to make buildings, catch some wild animals to meet their own needs. Humans gradually throw our mother nature out of balance(平衡). For example, cutting a large number of forests leads to global(全球的)warming.
Although we don't know exactly what first caused the COVID-19 outbreak, Brian Lamacraft at Medium said it's time for people to " think carefully about our relationship with our mother nature" and " reconnect with this world and everything that we've been given". After all, according to US poet Gary Snyder, " Nature is not the place to visit. It's our home."

"What's the name of the supermarket I can't remember right now." Have you ever heard your grandparents ask questions like this sometimes Usually, we think that older people's memory becomes had because their brains get weak. But now a team of scientists at the University of Tubingen in Germany has a new idea. " The human brain works slower in old age," says Michael Ramscar, the team's lead scientist, " only because it has stored more information over time." The findings are based on a series of computer tests related to learning and memory.
Scientists had the computers read a certain amount of words and learn new things each day. When the computer "read" a small amount of data(数据), its performance on cognitive(认知)tests was similar to that of a young adult. But if the computer took in larger amounts of data, its performance was similar to that of an older adult. Often it was slower, but not because its processing ability had dropped. Rather, increased "experience" had caused the computer's database to grow, giving it more data to process-which takes more time. This is similar to how old people process information.
Imagine that one person knows just two people's birthdays and can get them right each time he or she is asked. Another person knows the birthdays of 2, 000 people , but can only match the right person to the right birthday 9 times out of 10. Can you say the first person has a better memory than the second person

Instead of gulping(狼吞虎咽地吃)your food, try eating more slowly. It may help you drop those unwanted pounds. The conclusion is from a new study by Japanese researchers.
The study showed that compared with people who gobbled their food, those who ate at a normal speed were 29 percent less likely to be obese(肥胖的). But those who ate slowly were up to 42 percent less likely to be obese. In addition, slow eaters tended to be healthier and have a healthier lifestyle than those who ate quickly or at a normal speed.
"However, this study could not prove that eating speed causes or stops obesity," the researchers noted. They were led by Dr. Haruhisa Fukuda from Japan.
"Slow eating has its advantages and a few disadvantages," said Samantha Heller from New York City." On the one hand, slow eating gives our bodies time to register a sense of satisfaction and fullness, so we eat less. We are more likely to enjoy the taste of food. On the other hand, the longer some people sit in front of food, the more food they will eat," she said.
"Speed eating appears to be far more harmful. People who eat quickly, as many of us do, gulp far more food than they need. In many European countries, slow eating is a way of life," Heller said," In America, speed eating takes the lead. Thus, we need to encourage people to have a change, learn the way of slower eating from Europeans and get a true enjoyment of food."

Have you ever had dreams about building a robot Or putting together a spaceship Or even seeing your face made out of chocolate Done. All you need is a 3-D printer!
The possibilities of 3-D printing seem endless. All the user has to do is to design(设计)an object on the computer and choose a material(材料)to print in. The printers print in hundreds of different materials including glass, sugar and even skin! When the user presses"print", the 3-D printer spreads the material layer(层)by layer and like magic the object is produced.
The first 3-D printer was invented in 1986 by an American, Charles Hull. But 3-D printing has only become cheap enough recently for most people to use. Designers now use 3-D printing to create unusual things. The Dutch artist Dirk Vander Kooj prints furniture made from old fridges. And doctors have used 3-D printing to print human body parts! The Telegraph reported in February that scientists from Cornell Medical College even printed a man-made ear.
But like a lot of new technologies, if 3-D printing gets into the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. In 2011 a group of four men in the US used 3-D printing to produce ATM skimmers (提款机盗刷器). These were placed on an ATM and stole over $400, 000from users of the ATM. It is terrible to think that criminals like them might one day use a 3-D printer to print a gun.
But for better or for worse, 3-D printing has been put into use. In a few years, you'll probably be wondering how you could ever live without your 3-D printer!

Wild beavers (河狸) are back! Experts say that the wild beaver families are doing well. The beavers are even boosting wildlife and the environment!
Over ten years ago, a family of beavers turned up in a part of the river Otter, in Devon. No one knew exactly where they came from. It was a big surprise, wild beavers hadn't lived in England for around 400 years!
In 2015, the government allowed the beavers to stay there as part of a trial (试验). They wanted to see if these animals could be reintroduced to the wild. The trial ends in February. Some scientists from the University of Exeter already say the beavers help the wildlife in the area. One scientist called it "an amazing story".
A lot of this is because of dams. Beavers build dams along the river. This creates deep pools in the riverbed and slows the water down. Scientists say this is perfect for many different types of plants and animals! Many plants are growing near the beavers. Different types of animals are also becoming more and more in the river. Beavers also help make flooding less, scientists say. The beavers' dams slow down the speed of the river, especially after heavy rain.
There are, however, some problems. Beavers gnaw (咬,啃)on trees and this can harm them. Their dams can also sometimes create floods (洪水) on people's land.
Beavers aren't the only animals that are being reintroduced to the wild! In 2019, red squirrels were brought back to an area of the Scottish Highlands. Further away, the world's rarest (罕见的) duck, the Madagascar pochard, is making a comeback. It was set free into the wild on the African island in 2019 and is doing well.
