Five years ago, my mother gave birth to a brother for me when I was 8 years old. I have learned a lot from getting along with him.
After he was born, I almost became a babysitter(保姆). I had to amuse him after school. I would make faces and sing to him when he was crying. Sometimes I even carried him everywhere in our yard to refresh him while my parents were busy. What I liked to do best was feed him when looking after him. How cute he was as he tasted his favorite food! My parents often praised me happily, “As an elder brother, you've done well in looking after your younger brother.”
I have got happiness from sharing. When I was young, I was the only child in my family. I could get what I wanted from my parents and get my parents' whole love. I was a “Little Emperor”.
But now, as long as I get something good, I will share it with him. I remembered the year when he was three, he was fond of Rubik's cubes(魔方). So I bought one for him with my lucky money as a birthday present. When he got the toy, he was so happy that he laughed, hugged me and said, “Brother, I love you!”

On the second floor of a big garage in New York City, 63 уear old Nelson Molina was listening to a CD which he had found in the rubbish. The song The Way You Look Tonight was playing through a music player. In fact, all the space was full of things strangers had thrown away. “My family kept everything,” said Molina. “Now, people throw it all away.” Molina, during his 34 years as a sanitation worker(环卫工人), gave these things a second life.
Molina grew up in a poor area with his parents and five other kids in the family and developed a habit of picking up things that could still be used at a young age. “My family was poor, so we didn't get much for Christmas,” he said. “I'd go out to look for a toy for my sisters, or maybe a truck for my brothers.” He kept his habit secret from his friends, but not out of shame, he just didn't want the competition.
On the job, Molina had his sixth sense for finding gems. He could tell whether a bag was full of bottles or a different kind of glass just by sound. He kept special finds on the truck, and then put them in out of the way places in the garage. After almost 10 years, he began showing his discoveries. Recently, a team of New York University students has taken on the job of sorting the tens of thousands of objects, in the hope that the collection, which has hardly been open to the public, might one day be shown in a sanitation museum.

“I'm going to school today!” says my little brother, Trevor, jumping to the breakfast table. He's already wearing his backpack. In fact, it's not great for me to be at the same school at all.
After Mom drops us off, I lead him to his classroom that I once studied. “Hi, Mrs. Morena!” I say. “This is Trevor.”
“Hello, Trevor!” Mrs. Morena kneels(跪着)so they're the same height. “Want to meet the other kids?” Trevor nods and lets go of my hand.
I run across the playground and go to my classroom. My seat is by an open window, so I can see the kindergarten(幼儿园)room if I look outside. By break, I've forgotten all about Trevor. Suddenly, Trevor is sitting in the sandbox, with tears on his face.
“I want to go home!” he shouts. Mrs. Morena tries talking to him, but he's still crying.

I have an idea. “Trevor! I'll be in that window over there.” I point. “I'll blow kisses across the playground, OK?”

I prefer to go slowly when I drive in the mountains of my home, because the forest scenery is beautiful no matter what the season is. This morning I was driving slower than usual because an early March snow had made the roads slippery(湿滑的). Going up a mountain road, I had to slow down as I rounded a sharp, snowy curve(拐弯处). That was when I saw a strong and handsome male deer standing in the middle of the road. I came to a full stop and for a few seconds we just looked at each other. His eyes seemed wise and calm. Finally, he nodded his head at me. I nodded in return and waved with my hand for him to go on. He then jumped and ran across the road, up the hill, and back into the woods. I drove on smiling at the magic of this moment and thanked that I had been going slowly enough not to hit this beautiful creature.
Most of us rush through this life not knowing what we are missing. We hardly get to enjoy what each day brings us. Wouldn't it be better to go slowly through our days here Life is meant to be savored. Moments are meant to be valued. Days are meant to be lived in love and joy not flown through at a crazy speed.
The next time you find yourself going too fast, slow down. Take the time to watch the sunrise fill the world with light. Take the time to smile, laugh and sing. Take the time to read and relax. Take the time to live your life with love and enjoy all the miracles(奇迹)each day brings you. If you do, your life will be so much better and more beautiful. Tommy and his sister Maggie visited their grandparents on their farm. One day, Tommy found a slingshot(弹弓) in his grandparents' home. It was Saturday again. Lily and Lucy disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell them apart sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Lily had to attend the art lesson and Lucy had to attend her ballet(芭蕾) lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Lily and Lucy at the same time. “Do you have the same idea as me?” they asked each other and laughed. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Lily put on Lucy's ballet dress while Lucy put Lily's brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Lucy couldn't understand the art teacher. Unlike Lily, Lucy was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Lucy didn't dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Lily was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Lucy, you should remember the basic steps. You can't depend on copying what others are doing.”

Can plants talk Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked(攻击)by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I'm being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps(黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more food.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can't hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili(辣椒) plants do this. Some trees make small noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is connected underground by fungi(霉菌). It connects the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad influence. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.

Many scientists once believed that physical similarities between twins are genetic(基因的), while their characters, intelligence and other differences between them are an effect of their environment. Now scientists are discovering that the boundaries(界限)between genes and environment are not so clear.
Twins Jim Springer and Jim Lewis were adopted as babies and raised by different couples. When the Jims finally met at age 39, they discovered they had plenty in common. Both were six feet tall, 180 pounds. They had the same smile and the same voice. When scientist Thomas Bouchard Jr. invited the Jim twins to his lab, people there found it very hard to tell them apart.
But the similarities didn't stop at the physical. They'd both had dogs named Toy. They had both married women named Linda and then their marriage broke up. They'd both been policemen, enjoyed music, and left love notes around the house for their wives. They had so much in common, and it seemed unlikely these were just coincidences(巧合).
The Jim twins were just one of 137 sets of separated twins Bouchard tested. When they compared the twins' IQ scores, Bouchard and his team reached a surprising discovery. They found that intelligence was mostly connected to genes rather than to training or education. It seemed the differences in family and environment had little influence.
“However, genes can't control everything,” said Danielle Reed, who also studies twins. Reed's research shows that though nothing can truly change our DNA, environmental differences that a child experiences before birth and in their first year can sometimes change the way the DNA behaves, making even identical twins into very different people. “What I like to say is that Mother Nature writes some things in pencil and some things in pen,” she explains. “Things written in pen you can't change. That's DNA. But things written in pencil, you can.”

Go, commonly known in China as weiqi, is a board game for two players. To win, one player must use black or white playing pieces, named stones, to take up more areas.
The game was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago. It's one of the four Chinese traditional fine arts, along with playing guqin, writing and painting, so it owns a wide fan base in China. Now it is also popular in other parts of the world.
In Germany, the Berlin Go Association has worked together with the China Cultural Center to host The China Cup, which sees about 50 to 100 players each year. As the cooperation(合作)between China and Germany deepens, many Go training courses are offered, and sometimes professional players from China are invited to give talks to German Go lovers.
Andreas Urban, chairman of Berlin Go Association, discovered a book on Go accidentally. “I tried to understand the rules, but I couldn't.” said Urban. Schreiber, the vice(副的)chairman, was introduced to the game 16 years ago by a classmate. “The first time I played Go, I even couldn't understand the rules, ”he said. But both of them found the game more and more interesting after practice. “I advise children to learn Go. They can learn that there is always someone stronger and it's OK to lose. They can also learn how to improve from their mistakes and say tomorrow will be better than today,” said Schreiber.
To the experienced players, Go can be very addictive(使人入迷的), as it is not just for fun, but also has a deeper cultural ground. When two players meet on the Go board, they follow the same rules, but may carry completely different methods. One of the best ways to improve is to play against someone who's stronger, as well as from different cultural backgrounds. This kind of cross cultural communication helps the development of Go.

Humans have many instinctive(本能的)behaviors. We can yawn(打哈欠)and laugh from birth. Why Maybe we can't answer the question immediately. But we know that everyone yawns in the same way and laughs in the same way.
About yawning, we also know that it is contagious. When we see someone yawn, we yawn, too. Many people say that they yawn because they are bored or tired. Someone believes that the man who yawns a lot is lazier than other people. This might be true. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. For example, Olympic runners, often yawn before a race. Why is that
Some scientists believe that yawning makes us be able to think or notice things quickly. When we yawn, we breathe more deeply. Maybe this makes us be careful of the things around.
About laughing, scientists say that people laugh about 17 times a day. They believe that laughter is good for us. Why For one thing, laughter is good exercise. When we laugh, we exercise many muscles(肌肉)in our body. Scientists say that one hundred laughs equals ten minutes of running. When we laugh, we also breathe deeply. This helps us relax. That's good for us, too.
Why do people laugh That is a hard question to answer. We know that people laugh more often in a group. They don't laugh very often when they are alone. Many scientists believe that we use laughter to connect to other people. Laughter helps us be part of a group in a short time.

“If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden.” These words come from The Secret Garden which first came out in 1911. At that time, only the very rich in Britain had gardens. Very soon after this, homes with gardens began to be built. This is what started the British love of gardening. Today millions of Brits like to say that they have “green__fingers”, with around half the population spending their free time gardening.
For many people in the UK, their garden is their own private world. Each spring, children plant sunflowers and wait to see which one is the tallest. Experienced gardeners know just the right corner for roses, and others spend hours trying to grow perfect vegetables to enter into competitions. And while many Brits like nothing better than spending their Sunday cutting the grass, some are happy just to sit under the trees and enjoy the beauty of the world around them.
But in cities, limited space has led to people looking for new solutions. Those without outside space can rent small pieces of land on which to grow things. Today, there are over 4,000 people in London waiting for such pieces of land. One recent idea has been to turn housetops and walls into private gardens. These gardens have helped make the cities greener and the air cleaner.
As well as being good for the environment, gardening is also good for the spirit. What other free time activity allows you to be at one with nature and create more beautiful living things And take a moment to read this line from The Secret Garden: “Where you tend a rose… A thistle(蓟)cannot grow.”
