In what order is the story written How do you know
The story is written in time order. Because there are lots of linking words related to time, such as three years ago, one day and all at once.
Underline all the linking words related to time and read them aloud.
Para Linking words
Para.1 about three years ago
Para.2 one day, all at once, in less than a minute, the moment
Para.3 at that moment, suddenly, moment after moment;
Para.4 after a while
Para.5 some time after I left the boat, soon after that, then, in the end
Retell the story in pairs. Include at least 4 of the linking words.
Focus on language
Find out at least one descriptive sentence in the story that provide a vivid picture in your mind and explain why.
1.“I felt sick, as if I was falling from a mountain top in a dream (L11-12)”.
I think this sentence is descriptive, because it uses simile(明喻) to vividly show how huge the wave was and makes me imagine the horrible feeling of the storyteller.
2. “We went round and round, nearer and nearer to the horrible edge of the whirlpool (L12-13)”.
I think this sentence is descriptive, in that it uses rhetorical repetition (反复,叠言) to emphasize the fast movement of the boat towards the edge and the increasing danger the storyteller and his elder brother was facing.

3. “I began to think how amazing a thing it was to die in such a way, and how wonderful it was to see the power of nature(L15-16)”.
I think this sentence is descriptive, for the parallelism (排比) highlights how deeply the storyteller was amazed by the enormous power of nature and reveals his strong reverence(敬畏) for the forces of nature.
4. “Then the sky was clear, the wind calmer, and the moon was shining (L29-30)”.
I think this sentence is descriptive, because the vivid description of the scenery indicated that as the weather condition got better, the storyteller got out of danger. And he was very much relieved from the horrible experience.

Why did the storyteller choose a barrel to help him escape
Why did the storyteller survive while his elder brother not
What does the storyteller mean by “it took only six hours to break my body and soul”
Why did the storyteller choose a barrel to help him escape
Because a barrel is round, tube-shaped and relatively small. According to the three observations, that makes a barrel fall down slowly. So it’s very likely that the barrel will help him float and carry him away.
Why did the storyteller survive while his elder brother not
The fishermen survived because he was calm in the whirlpool and made clear observations. Based on the observations, he made the right decision, to tie himself to a barrel and jumped into the sea. While his elder brother was too frightened and stayed in the heavy boat.
The Moskoe-strom lasted six hours. This broke his body as the storm battered (连续猛击) him about. It broke his soul as he suffered deep fright and hopelessness during the storm and lost his two brothers. The terror of the maelstrom has had a very negative effect on his mind and body, which he doesn’t think he will ever recover from.
What does the storyteller mean by “it took only six hours to break my body and soul”
Group discussion (2)
Why didn’t the fishermen believe “my” story Do you believe him Why or why not
What lessons do you learn from the story
What does the writer intend to tell us about human and nature
On the one hand, the storyteller’s hair was changed from black to white so the fishermen could not recognize him; on the other hand, they deemed it’s very unlikely for someone to survive a maelstrom.
Why didn’t the fishermen believe “my” story
I don’t believe him. At the beginning of the story, the fisherman said that “it took less than a single day to change my hair from black to white”. I think that’s impossible. The fisherman must be lying.
Besides, on the inside of the whirlpool, the fisherman said that there were other objects in the whirlpool---trees and barrels. According to my knowledge, trees and barrels appear somewhere near the land, where a whirlpool is very unlikely to occur. So these two points are actually contradictory.
Additionally, on the inside of the whirlpool, they went round in circles at great speed. How could the fisherman manage to catch a barrel and tie himself to it Where did the barrel come from Did it really exist
Do you believe him Why or why not
From the story, we learned that staying calm is particularly important when we are in an extremely dangerous situation. At the same time, we should observe what is happening and make the right decision to save ourselves from the danger.
What lessons do you learn from the story
Humans depend on nature;
Humans are fragile compared with nature, which has enormous power;
Humans can only survive when they observe the laws of nature.
What does the writer intend to tell us about human and nature
Homework
Write up a story about something scary or unusual that you experienced.
Requirements:
Try to make your description of the events vivid;
Include your feelings and thoughts;
Use linking words to make your story smooth.
