Subject-Verb Agreement
Rules
Rule #1: Subject is Plural
When the subject is PLURAL, the verb is PLURAL
They are thirsty. Jack and Jill like to climb hills.
HINT: Watch for the word “AND”. “and” makes the subject plural.
Some nouns are hard to know if they are plural…
The scissors are sharp.
HINT: They have two parts!
2 parts = PLURAL
The tweezers were lost.
The scissors is sharp.
The tweezers was lost.
Rule #2: Subjects is connected by “or”
When two singular subjects are connected by “or”, the verb is SINGULAR
The book or the pen is in the drawer
Jack or Jill likes to climb hills.
HINT: It’s singular because the verb is describing ONE subject.
The book is in the drawer.
Jill likes to climb.
The pen is in the drawer.
Jack likes to climb.
Rule #3: Plural and singular subjects connected by “or”
When there is a singular and plural subject connected by “or”, the verb agrees with the subject that’s closest.
Either the boy or his parents walk down the street.
The girls or John dances every Tuesday.
“parents” is closer than “boy”.
Verb is plural.
“John” is closer than “girls”.
Verb is singular.
Rule #4: “Doesn’t” and “Don’t”
Doesn’t = DOES + NOT = Singular verb
match with singular subject
Don’t = DO + NOT = Plural verb
match with plural subject
They don’t like it.
EXCEPTION! When the subject is “I” or “you”, use the plural verb “Don’t”
He doesn’t like it.
Rule #5: Ignore added phrases.
Don’t get tricked by all the other nouns added between the subject and the verb.
One of the boxes is open.
HINT: Just ignore them and keep your on the subject!
The team captain, as well as his teammates, is nervous
The woman, with six dogs, walks down the street

HINT: Again, ignore the other nouns!
These words are SINGULAR subjects.

Rule #7: Exception words.

The news is boring Physics is a fun subject
Some words have an “s” but require a SINGULAR verb.
BUT…..
Rule #7: But…..
Twenty dollars is a lot of money.
“Dollars” is special.
1) An amount of money = SINGULAR verb
2) The dollars themselves = PLURAL verb
Dollars are often used in the United States
Rule #8: Subject after Verb
When the sentence has “There is” or “There are” the subject is after the verb.
There are many questions.
There is a question
Rule #9: Group nouns
Some nouns imply more than one person but it’s still considered ONE subject = SINGULAR verb.
The team runs during practice.
The family has gone camping
