Text 10
The so-called“model”United Nations conference is essentially like the way the real U.N.handles international issues.
Usually organized by students,“model”U.N.has been held since the 1920s.About 400-thousand high school students take part in some 200 model U.N.conferences each year in the United States. But the most recent one, held at George Washington University in Washington,D.C.,drew nearly 600 students. Many parents believe it's very important for the kids to be aware of the issues in the world. In this way, they get very involved and care more about the world around them.Teachers say students do more than study to get ready. The students would be learning history, geography, diplomacy, and negotiation skills.Different students will usually represent different countries and argue against each other in the conference.Students will usually speak out on issues like child labour and women's rights.Besides, political and economic situations in different countries are also their major topics.Though it is only a “model”U.N.conference,many students say the model U.N.was inspiring, and made them think seriously about helping people around the world. And for many teenagers,it is also a valuable real-life experience.

36.C 语言的起源一直是人们感兴趣的事情,但是没人确切地知道语言的起源究竟是怎样的。然而,我们还是对语言了解许多。but后不能出现逗号。
37.D 由上下文可知此处一直是在讲对语言的认识,而不单纯是对汉语或英语的认识。
38.A 人们对现在的语言以及更早的语言有所了解。由上下文可知此处与today对应。
39.B 由后面的“about three thousand languages in the world today”可知此处应用be动词的一般现在时的复数形式。

A
Who taught you to speak English? Your parents, while you were a young child? Your teachers at school? Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an understanding of what is rapidly becoming a truly global language.
There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English.
Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangers of “mono-culturalism”, a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?
Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary (相反), I would have thought although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least some English) and Pakistan (the same situation with India)...
If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonald's burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant (占主导地位的), it will kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well.
When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic e-mail from a listener in Ireland. “The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it's like a rose,”he said,“but who would ever want their garden just full of roses?”
Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don't necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that's fine by me.
56.According to the passage, how many people in the world are speaking English as their first language now?
A.About 376 million. B.About 752 million.
C.80% of the world people. D.One billion people.
57.By saying“Ask the people of India...and Pakistan...”in the fourth paragraph, the author is trying to show that ________.
A.speaking the same language doesn't necessarily bring peace
B.wars can destroy the relationship between two countries
C.English doesn't kill other languages
D.English is widely used in the world
58.What does “garden”in the last two paragraphs stand for?
A.Language. B.Family.
C.The world. D.The Earth.
59.The author would probably agree that ________.
A.it's very hard to plant many kinds of flowers in a garden
B.it's good for people from other countries to learn English
C.more and more people like to plant roses in their gardens
D.English is easier to learn than other languages
答案与解析
56.A 细节理解题。本文第二段讲述了英语的使用情况。第二段第一句中提到,把英语作为第一语言的人数大约是376,000,000。
57.A 观点态度题。本句承接上文“although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars”而来,作者以印度和巴基斯坦为例说明彼此间的了解并不能减少战争。
58.C 词义猜测题。在最后两段作者提出没有人会让他们的花园仅仅种植玫瑰,他想表达的意思是世界上不能所有国家都使用同一种语言,在这里roses指“单一语言”,因此garden指“世界”。
59.B 推理判断题。在最后一段第一句和最后一句中,作者用花来比喻语言,由此我们看出,作者认为别的国家的人学英语(to plant English roses)是好的。
B
If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice: There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come_across,_but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skilful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practise listening.
For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programmes every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
60.To improve your reading, when you read you should ________.
A.look up all the new words in the dictionary
B.think about what you are reading actively
C.spend more time studying grammars
D.copy as many words and sentences as possible
61.The underlined phrase“come across” in the second paragraph can probably be replaced by“________”.
A.meet by accident B.discover
C.find on purpose D.look for
62.The author seems to agree with the view that ________.
A.everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programmes every day
B.you needn't practise listening if you keep on reading every day

(2011·辽宁)
About 21,000 young people in 17 American states do not attend classes in school buildings. Instead, they receive their elementary (初等) and high school education by working at home on computers. The Centre for Education Reform says the United States has 67 public “cyberschools”, and that is about twice as many as two years ago.
The money for students to attend a cyberschool comes from the governments of the states where they live. Some educators say cyberschools receive money that should support traditional public schools. They also say it is difficult to know if students are learning well.
Other educators praise this new form of education for letting students work at their own speed. These people say cyberschools help students who were unhappy or unsuccessful in traditional schools. They say learning at home by computer ends long bus rides for children who live far from school.
Whatever the judgment of cyberschools, they are getting more and more popular. For example, a new cyberschool called Commonwealth Connections Academy will take in students this fall. It will serve children in the state of Pennsylvania from ages five through thirteen.
Children get free equipment for their online education. This includes a computer, a printer, books and technical services. Parents and students talk with teachers by telephone or by sending emails through their computers when necessary.
Students at cyberschools usually do not know one another. But 56 such students who finished studies at Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School recently met for the first time. They were guests of honour at their graduation.

A. Their equipment costs a lot of money.
B. They get little support from the state government.
C. It is hard to know students' progress in learning.
D. The students find it hard to make friends.
66.Cyberschools are getting popular because ________.
A. they are less expensive for students
B. their students can work at their own speed
C. their graduates are more successful in society
D. they serve students in a wider age range
67.We can infer that the author of the text is ________.
A. unprejudiced in his description of cyberschools
B. excited about the future of cyberschools
C. doubtful about the quality of cyberschools
D. disappointed at the development of cyberschools

Every day, 340 million people speak it. One billion people are learning it and it is said that by 2050, half of the world's population will be using it. What are we talking about? That global language—English.
The English language started in Britain in the 5th century. It is a mixed language. It was built up when German, Scandinavian and French invaders settled in England and created a common language for communication.
Today it is the official language of the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Ireland as well as many islands in the Caribbean. Many other countries and regions use it for politics and business, such as India, Pakistan, and Nigeria. English is also one of the official languages of Hong Kong.
But global advertising and pop music mean that in most countries, you will see or hear some English. Thanks_to McDonalds, we all know about“hamburgers”,“fries” and “milkshakes”. Songs by Madonna, Britney Spears and Celine Dion are in English. We can sing along, even if we do not understand what we are singing!
English is a messy (杂乱的) language. Every year, dictionaries include new words that talk about popular culture, for example, computer-related words such as“blogging”,“download” and “chatroom”. Also included are words that teenagers use. Who does not know “cool”,“OK”and “hello”?
Other languages also influence English. Many English words come from French. Words like“café” and expressions like“c'est la vie” (that is life) are all part of the English language. On the other hand, the French language includes English words like“le weekend”and “le camping”. German words are also part of English.Words like“kindergarten” come from the German language.
Recently, British people have become interested in “yoga”. But the word comes from an ancient Hindu language in India.
68.The English language has a history of ________.
A.over 2,000 years B.over 500 years
C.over 1,500 years D.over 1,000 years
69.The underlined expression“Thanks to” can be replaced by“________”.
A.Because of B.Thankful to
C.Not until D.As if
70.Which of the following statements is TRUE about the language of English?

At_present,_many_schools_employ_foreign_teachers_to_teach_students_English._There_is_such_one_in_my_school._I_think_he_really_helps_us_a_lot_in_English_studying.
First of all, his standard, beautiful English makes us more interested in English. Second, different from Chinese teachers, he has special ways to make classes lively and interesting. As a result, we all play an active part in them. Third, before he came to our school, we were only good at doing written exercises in English. Now, however, with his help, we can really understand what English is and make use of every opportunity to practise English. I think that's the real purpose of studying English.
In a word, I do believe foreign teachers play a very important part in helping us have a good command of English.

Ⅰ.任务型阅读
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个词。
Although the US is a large country with many people, the language is almost the same wherever one goes. There are two reasons for this.
One is that people move around a great deal in the US. A man may grow up in one part of the country, go to college in another part, find work in another place, and marry a girl from still another part of the country. Railroads, airplanes, cars and highways make it easy to travel in America.
The second important reason is public communication. Movies, radio and television all use a standard form of speech, and almost everyone in the US hears it.
However, there are some words and expressions more common in one part of the country than in others. People in Boston send their dirty clothes to the“cleanser's” instead of the “cleaner's”. In some parts of the west, a soft drink is called“tonic”instead of“soda”.
The southern part of the US is probably the region with the most individual speech. Southern pronunciation is different from that in the rest of the country. Southerners talk slowly and often do not pronounce the letter“r”after vowels (元音) and change the [n?] sound to [n], so that“running” sounds like“runnin”and“sleeping” like“sleepin”.
In the southern mountains, there have not been any new settlers from other countries for two hundred years. The hill people have a way of speaking that is like the English spoken when their forefathers (祖先) left England to settle in the US centuries ago. Many songs they sing today are those sung long ago in England.
