Text 10
More and more private cars are being bought by Chinese families.Family cars are intended to be convenient, but will they really bring convenience to everyday life in a country with such a large population? Moreover, driving cars will probably make people sit all the time without any exercise. It will do harm to their health.Riding bicycles is much better. It is not practical for China to popularize family cars in the near future, especially in our big cities.
There are a number of reasons why private cars are becoming popular in China. To start with, many people have become wealthy. They can afford to buy their own cars.Besides, with their improved living conditions, many people think that they should have more comfortable means of travelling. They are no longer satisfied with bicycles or motorcycles. Finally, new bank systems allow people to buy cars with loans. Thus, more and more people have cars.
However, private cars have caused some problems in China. One problem is traffic jams. With so many cars being used, the streets have become very crowded. The number of accidents has increased.Another problem is air pollution.People are starting to complain of the waste gas given off by cars.Fortunately, local governments have become aware of these problems and are trying their best to solve them.

My mother loves flowers. As soon as warm weather comes around, you will find her planting, watering and weeding over everything. For many years we lived next door to each other, and she spent as much time in my garden as she did her own. After the flowers became plentiful each summer, she would cut colourful bouquets (花束)to enjoy inside the house—both hers and mine. I would often come home from work and find a beautiful arrangement (布置) of fresh flowers on my coffee table.
Shortly before Christmas one year, a local flower shop offered a bouquet-a-month special. It seemed to be a great way to thank her for all of the flowers she had given me through the years.
After the holidays, in early January, I drove her to the flower shop to pick up her first month's bouquet. The small fresh colourful bouquet would hardly fill a small vase (花瓶).
I was so embarrassed (尴尬的). However, after we returned home, she began to arrange the flowers she had received. “Mum, I'm sorry,” I told her.“I can't believe how skimpy that bouquet is.” She looked at me and smiled.“It's okay.” she said.“It allows me to better enjoy the beauty of each one.”
Mum's words helped me to realize something bigger and more important—when we have too many good things, we often fail to enjoy the beauty of each one.
Thanks, Mum, for helping me understand that less is sometimes more.

Every child should have a solid science education whether they want to be the next Albert Einstein or Michael Jordan. Science is all around us, it is everywhere, reaching everything that we do. The “we” in that last statement includes children. Children that understand how science plays a role in our everyday lives have a wonderful foundation (基础) for success in life.
Children can learn science at any age really. The earlier they start the better. The best way for kids to learn is through play and repetition. These are wonderful science toys for preschool science activities. With play being the best way kids learn, it only makes sense then to introduce toys to them that encourage understanding science. Children love to use their imagination to have fun and to help them understand the world around them. So play is a wonderful time to be introducing science to them. Think of the games that we used to play. Don't spill the Beans, Don't Break the Ice, the Telephone Game, Lincoln Logs, each of these games has science behind it.
Children are by nature curious (好奇的) as they feel out the world, trying to make sense of what is around them. Science feeds that curiosity hunger that they have.It is a hunger that needs to be encouraged and satisfied. Finding these toys is not as hard as one would think. To make sure that you get good quality toys, visit science toy shops online. These are the best places to find unique (独特的) science toys such as 3D space projectors, or Hydro Greenhouses.
Help your children appreciate the world around them with understanding the world around them. This way, they understand how we are all connected together. Children will not only question the world, but be able to come up with answers to those questions on their own. Science is life.

Wong Fuk-wing, a Hong Kong volunteer (志愿者) at an orphanage (孤儿院) in Yushu, was killed in the earthquake when he was trying to save others on April 14,2010.
Wong managed to run safely out of the building with some children when the first quake happened at 7:50 a.m. on April 14, but he went back inside to rescue three other children and three teachers inside, although he knew the danger of aftershocks (余震).
At 10 a.m., all the children and one of the teachers were saved. However, Wong was buried under the fallen building and died. The other two teachers were still waiting to be rescued.
46-year-old Wong was a truck driver, who often said he could only give his efforts to charity (慈善) instead of money, as he did not earn a lot. His tragic (悲剧的) end touched the hearts of many people both in Hong Kong and on the mainland.

Hong Kong Chief Secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen said he had “the highest respect” for the hero who gave his life for others.“What he did has shown the Hong Kong spirit.” The citizens of Hong Kong called him “the pride of Hong Kong's people” and people on the mainland have also praised him as “a true hero”.

A man from China has written for advice about how to lose weight. Michael in Shanghai says he is 26 and has fought with obesity (肥胖) for most of his life.
Obesity, a weight problem, is a complex (复杂的) condition. A doctor may advise taking medicine along with changing one's behaviours. Experts say that the most successful weight-loss plans include a well-balanced diet and exercise.
People who want to avoid weight gain have to balance the number of calories they eat with the number of calories they use. To lose weight, you can reduce the number of calories you take in, increase the number you use, or both.
A recent study looked at four of the most popular dieting plans in the US. Researchers at Stanford University in California studied over 300 overweight women, mostly in their thirties and forties. Each woman went on one of the four plans: Atkins, The Zone, Ornish or LEARN. The women attended diet classes and received written information about the food plans.
At the end of the year, the women on the Atkins diet had lost the most, more than four and one-half kilograms on ave-rage. They also did better on tests for cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
Christopher Gardner, who led the study, says the Atkins diet may be more successful because of its simple message to eat less sugar. He also says that the advice to increase protein in the diet leads to more satisfying meals. He says that there was not enough money to study men, but that men would probably have similar results.
Last week, another report based on thirty-one studies suggested that only a small minority of people have long-term success with dieting. Most dieters regained their lost weight within five years and often they become more overweight. But those who kept the weight off generally were the ones who exercised.

A.A sense of humour is not an inborn ability.
B.A sense of humour can be developed in our life.
C.A sense of humour helps us from several aspects.
D.A sense of humour means more than telling jokes.
E.A sense of humour can be expressed in many ways.
F.A sense of humour helps people to better enjoy life.
1.________ As awareness of the benefits of humour increases, most of us want to get all the laughs we can. It seems that almost every day there is another new discovery about the power of humour to help us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Every system of the body responds to laughter in some important or positive way.
2.________ Many people mistakenly believe that we are born with a sense of humour. They think that when it comes to a sense of humour, “either you've got it or you don't.” This is false. What is true, however, is that the ability to laugh and smile is actually something we are born with. For example, we laugh when we are tickled under the arm, even without thinking about how to react.
3.________ The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth in human infants, but that is not the same thing as having a sense of humour.( After all, when a baby laughs in his small bed we don't rush over and say,“That kid has a great sense of humour.”) Your sense of humour is something you can develop over a lifetime. Don't be nervous before others and try to laugh at yourself—then you will make them laugh too.
4.________ humour includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they do not have a good sense of humour because they are not good joke tellers. More than jokes, a sense of humour requires being willing and able to see the funny side of life's situations as they happen. In fact, one of the best definition of a sense of humour is “the ability to see the nonserious element in a situation.”
5.________ There may be a thousand different ways to express your sense of humour, but joke telling is only one of those ways. As more is discovered about how humour benefits our life, more people will be able to see and enjoy the humour when they are in a difficult situation.Life depends on air, food and water, but it is made easier to live with a good sense of humour.
