“What's this ” Mateo said, pointing at a wooden (木制的) box on the sidewalk. The sign on it said Little Free Library.
“I've heard of those,” Mateo's older sister, Luisa, said. “People build them and put books inside. Other people take the books they want and add ones they've already read.”
“I want to make something like that,” said Mateo.
“What if it doesn't work ” Luisa said. “Maybe kids won't notice it, or maybe they won't want to share their books.”
“I'd like to try anyway,” Mateo said.
With the help of his sister, Mateo built a wooden box with a door. Mateo put books inside the box and closed the door.
For the next few days, Mateo ran outside three times each day to check. But each time, his books were the only ones inside.
“I guess you were right, Luisa,” Mateo said. “No kids want to trade (相互交换) books.”
The next two days, Mateo didn't check the box.
“Aren't you going to check your little library, Mateo ” Luisa asked. “Maybe someone decided to trade their books after all. You should look.”
Mateo walked to the box slowly. He opened the door. His books were gone and new books filled the box. “It worked!” Mateo shouted in excitement.
Just then, his next-door neighbour Julianne walked up, carrying two books.
“It's a great idea,” Julianne said. “I didn't know about it until Luisa told my sister to tell me.”

If you want to travel on holiday, the very first question you must ask is, “How much is it going to cost ” With little money, you are not going to get very far. Backpacking (背包旅行) is a very popular way to travel because it doesn't cost much.
From recent newspaper reports, however, it seems that many young people have found a different way to see the world. Most of them come from Western countries. They usually fly to an Asian country from their home, and then try to beg (乞讨) for money once they arrive. In other words, they want others to pay for the rest of their trip. It is so popular that it has been given its own name: begpacking.
It is now quite usual to see begpackers sitting on the streets in some of Asia's popular shopping areas. They carry with them handwritten cards to ask for help. “I am travelling around Asia without money. Please help me.”
Recent reports show that some countries are getting tired of begpackers. A law has been passed in Thailand. The government can now take action against any foreigner begging on the street. Something similar has happened in Indonesia too. There, begpackers are taken by the police to their foreign embassy (大使馆). They are returned to their home.
Begpackers may get lucky and raise enough money to enjoy a comfortable trip. But travelling halfway across the world to beg on the street and see nothing seems to be a strange choice (选择). Will begpacking become more popular or disappear over time What's your opinion (看法)

Firefighting is an important job to keep people safe. It isn't an easy job, but if you like to help people, it could be the job for you!
Firemen have to take physical tests to make sure their bodies are strong enough to do all of the work. They have to be able to carry heavy things, go up a lot of stairs (楼梯), and work for a long time. Firemen also go through lots of training. Not only do they train themselves, but they also talk to other people about fire safety. Some schools have the firemen come in every year to teach kids about how to stay safe around fire. And one of the most important parts of being a fireman is working as a team to stop fires!
Some firemen stay at the fire station for a whole day, including overnight. When there is not a fire going on, firemen make sure all of their equipment (器材) is clean and in working order. After dinner, they are able to use their free time to relax. Firemen never know when a fire or other emergency (突发事件) is going to happen, so they have to be ready at all times. This means that even if they just sat down to eat dinner when the fire alarm (防火警报器) goes off, they can't finish eating. They have to leave all of their food where it is and go to help right away. Even in the middle of the night, firemen have to be able to wake up quickly to get to the emergency.
Firemen wear special equipment to keep them safe. They wear big jackets and pants made of special materials. Helmets are another type of protective equipment to protect their heads. They wear face masks and oxygen tanks to help them breathe (呼吸) even when the air is filled with smoke. Firemen also wear boots to protect their feet from the high temperature.
Firemen don't just put out fires. They also have special tools to help get people out of cars who are stuck, such as tools to lift the car, tools to break the windows, and tools to help get car doors open. In some places, firemen also have to be prepared to help people who are sick or hurt.

I started learning English at the age of 22. It is kind of late to start studying a new language. However, age is never a problem if you really want to learn something.
I was preparing myself to study engineering in the USA. To enter my dream college, I had to get a TOEFL score (托福分数) of 90 or higher. After careful thought, I signed up for (报名参加) a six-month programme to study English.
It was difficult to get 90 in six months for someone who started learning English from the very beginning, but I decided to have a try. In order to join the programme, I moved to a different city and rented (租用) a house with a friend. We were in the same programme. We did not have any distractions (使人分心的事物) in our house, such as televisions, computers or smartphones.
We had classes every day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a lunch break only. After the classes were over, we had something for dinner and started reviewing what we had learned and doing homework. We would study until we became sleepy and usually, we would finish it by midnight.
My friend and I encouraged (鼓励) each other and we did our best. Luckily, we both got perfect TOEFL scores and went to the USA at last.

Dear Anna,
I'm really happy for you! Congratulations! Since I have been in your shoes before, I think my advice can be helpful to you.
First, be polite. A good class monitor should act as a role model for the rest of the students. Remember that if you give respect, you get respect.
Second, be fair. Be fair to everyone in the class. Do not treat your classmates differently. If your classmates are making noise, report them to the teacher as you would report others. This will help your classmates trust you.
Third, improve your communication skills. Good communication skills are important if you want to express yourself clearly. You have to be a patient listener as well. Make sure to listen to all the voices in the classroom.
I'm sure you can make a great class monitor.
Yours,
Yang Da
