Unit 4 Why don’t you talk to your parents
一、阅读理解
A
On a rainy day, it is easy for us to get wet when we use a common umbrella.
A student of Brunei University in London solved this problem. He invented an unbreakable umbrella. He said the umbrella could be upright in bad weather. Even on a windy day, the umbrella will not be out of shape.
Simon Warne said he came up with the idea when he saw people trying their best to keep their umbrellas open on a rainy day. He thought there must be a better solution.
Another invention comes from Natalie King. She invented a special flowerpot. The flowerpot can tell people if there is something wrong with the plant. There is a light under the flowerpot. The light of the pot will be green if all is well. And if the plant is too dry, hot or cold, the light will be red.
25-year-old Natalie said she invented this kind of flowerpot because of her old grandfather. His eyes were not very well. "This kind of flowerpot is very useful to people like him," she said. "When the light turns red, he will know the plant is too dry or too cold, so he has to do something until the light turns green."

Doing sports is one of the most important things in our lives. Although I can’t get any prizes in all of the events, I still enjoy the sports meeting. Last week, our school held a sports meeting in Yuanshen Stadium.
Before the sports meeting, the athletes of our class practiced more and more, but we still couldn’t get any prizes. It was a big shame for us! Especially the relay race, we spent a week practicing it. Although we were all hard-working, we just got the fourth. Though we didn’t get any gold, silver or bronze medals, and everyone was not very happy, we knew that we must practice every day and then we could run faster, and just practicing before the sports meeting was not enough. So we decided to practice every day from then on. We believed we would be the winner in the next sports meeting.
And in fact, everyone will be happy in the sports meeting no matter whether it is success or failure. Because the real meaning of sports is to join in!

Being an artist is so easy, and Lee Hadwin can do it in his sleep. He is good at drawing horses, people and mountains. And he only draws in black and white. Even though there are paints and colored pencils for him, he never uses them.
Ever since he was four years old, he has been waking up to find detailed drawings beside his bed. But he doesn’t remember he finished the drawings, and he doesn’t go to any art lessons either. When he is awake, Hadwin says he can’t draw at all. In fact, he has no interest in art. During the day, he works as a nurse in London.
When he was young, Hadwin liked to cover his walls and tables with his pictures. He also starts leaving paper and pencils out for himself. While he is asleep, he gets out of bed and draws, without ever waking up.
Usually he draws twice a week; sometimes he will go three or four months without drawing.
Researchers at the Edinburgh Sleep Center are trying to understand how and why he can draw in sleep now.
10 As an artist, Lee Hadwin is special because of _____.
A. his workplace and his job

二、任务型阅读
Kevin sat at the desk in his study, with a pencil in his hand. He had to write a story for his English class by Friday." ①我不知道写什么,"he complained to his dog, who was asleep at his feet. Kevin was talkative when speaking to his friends, yet he had trouble finding words when he had to write. By bedtime Kevin had drawn a picture of his smiling dog. He had drawn a tree with its branches (树枝) blowing in a wind. He had also written a note asking his friend to go to the movies on Saturday. But he had not written a single word of his story.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Scott, Kevin’s English teacher, asked the class to hand in the first draft (草稿) of their stories. Kevin had to turn in the only work that he had — the page with his name, the drawings, and the note.
②Kevin wasn’t surprised when his teacher asked him to stay after class the next day. But he was surprised by what she said to him. "Kevin, this is a fantastic story — the dog, the movie, the tree in the wind. I can’t wait to find out how they all fit together. I think you have the idea of a story there. Look at your note and the pictures and try to see if a story comes to you."
That night Kevin sat at his desk, and this was what he wrote: " One Saturday Tom went to meet his friend at the cinema. It looked as if it might rain, so Tom carried his umbrella. Suddenly a big storm blew in. The noise of the wind sounded _____ Tom’s dog Spotty. Spotty really hated storms and barked whenever he wanted to be let inside. Then Tom saw Spotty running after him down the busy street, barking. The sound was full of blame (责备). Tom felt guilty because he had left Spotty outside. He turned and headed home with Spotty. Tom just let Spotty into the room and the rain started to pour down."
Kevin had a story after all. The last thing he did was to write his name proudly at the top of the page.

Is a Training Class or a Private Tutor Necessary
Nowadays more and more middle school students are taking all kinds of training classes or asking a private tutor to help them study at weekends. There are two different views about it.
Some think it is necessary. First,it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves. Second,it can help them to learn what has been taught in class well. Third, they can learn a lot more. Others think it is unnecessary. They think students can easily become dependent on it,and students need time to relax. Besides, the purpose of many training classes and private tutors is to make money.
In my opinion,if you are really very weak in or interested in a certain subject, maybe it’s OK for you. If not,it’s unnecessary.
