Module8 Unit2 He was invited to competitions around the world
Teaching background:
This unit is mainly about Liu Xiang’s sports life. Liu Xiang represents not only the sportsmen like him but also the sportsmanship behind him. The passage aims at reading and writing about people’s favorite athletes with past tense and the past simple passive voice. This lesson plays an important part in the English teaching, it asks the Students to grasp the effective way of reading a biography. If the Students can learn it well, it will be helpful for Students to read the similar articles.
As for students, they have learned the past simple passive voice in the former unit and they also searched some basic information of Liu Xiang on the Internet, so they can understand the meaning of the text easily and be able to give a brief introduction of Liu Xiang. However, they are not good at analyzing the reasons why Liu Xiang succeeded and the meaning of his sports life. It’s also difficult for them to know the real spirit of sports and develop their interest in sports. So, varieties of activities will be held to help them abstract important information and improve their reading skills. By studying of this lesson, they will be able to write about their favorite athletes more profoundly.
After studying the teaching material and analyzing the rule of children’s growing of mind, I think the teaching objectives are the
followings:
Knowledge objectives:
learn the new words and phrases: sportsperson, hurdling, compare, break the record, hang around, take pride in, suffer
continue to learn the past simple passive voice.
know the sports life of Liu Xiang.
Ability objectives:
improve their reading skills of skimming and scanning.
analysis the reason why Liu Xiang succeed.
summarize the spirit of Liu Xiang.
share their favorite athletes.
Moral objectives:
know about the meaning of life.
know what sportsmanship is for teenagers.

At the same time, CAI can provide a real situation with its sound and picture, it can develop the Students creativity in learning English.
Teaching procedures: Step 1 Pre-reading
In this step, I’ll show a picture of Liu Xiang and students can say what
they know about him. When they talk about the achievements of Liu Xiang, a video will be shown to help them enjoy the exciting moments of Liu Xiang’s hurdling race at the Athens Olympics in 2004. After watching, they can try to guess the meaning of new words and phrases, such as, sportsperson, hurdling, compare, break the record, take pride in
Through this activity, I can arouse students’ interest and create scenes to guide the topic. Meanwhile, I can lead students to learn new vocabulary in a real situation and develop their interest in knowing more about Liu Xiang.
Step 2 While-reading
Task 1 Students will get the main idea with the help of the picture, the title and some key words from the passage.
It develops students’ reading skills of skimming for general idea. Task 2 Students will read the introduction of Liu Xiang quickly and answer the following questions:
How do you know Liu Xiang is a sports hero in 2004
Was he a successful sportsman at first
Task 3 the students are required to focus on the whole text carefully to locate particular information and finish the timeline of Liu Xiang’s sports life. The purpose is to train the students’ reading skills of scanning for specific information and to lead them to become aware of the importance of time words and past simple
passive voice in this context which can develop their writing ability of narration in logic and language.
Task 4 Students read Liu Xiang’s sports life again. In order to make the students understand the passage better, they will answer more questions which are based on the understanding of some particular sentences in the passage and their own experiences. Besides, I will show another Asia’s flying man, who they are familiar with by watching a video and help them to summarize more characteristics of a sportsman.
By doing so, they can analysis what can make a person successful and achieve the ability objectives.
Task 5 Further thinking
Students plot the track of Liu Xiang’s career and think about the meaning of life.
It aims to promote the students’ analyzing thinking and implement the basic task of morality education.
Step 4 Post-reading
Task 1 I will lead students to learn how to describe their favorite athletes by reading writing structure and show some information cards of Chinese athletes first, because I can provide students with sense of security by demonstrating which paves the way for the next step. Then, they work in teams of four to write their favorite athletes. The writing requirement and assessment will be provided to help
them to check their writing as well. By doing this part, students will transfer their ability from reading to writing.
Task 2 students enjoy a video and think about more questions:
The sportsmen’s life is changeable, what is not changeable
What is sportsmanship (Why do people like sports )
As Chinese teenagers, what should we practice the Olympic spirit in our life
According to the video and their discussion, they realized that life is changeable, but the internal spirit of a person can make a
difference and they can do better selves to chase their Chinese dream by practicing the Olympic spirit in their lives.
Finally, students can summarize what they have learned today. Homework
At the end of the class, I will tell students to make a poster for their favorite athletes. If they like, they can also make a fitness plan for themselves and keep it as long as they can.
Students can reconstruct the discourse, intake the language and the writing structure they learned and develop their creativity.
The last part: Teaching Reflection:
Although the topic of this passage is the sports life of Liu Xiang, the content of his spirit involved in the text is not enough, how to make the students see the field is what I thought the most, so I collected, organized
and edited video materials for students to have a more intuitive feeling of Chinese Track and Field and know what sportsmanship is. The atmosphere of the whole class is active, and students' learning motivation is always in a positive state, which promotes the ultimate achievement of teaching objectives。
