warming up and reading
Teaching aims
1) Ability aims: To develop Ss’ 4 basic skills, especially reading skills, such as skimming, scanning, guessing and concluding; detailed reading, study reading and appreciation. Guide them to use these reading skills to collect and deal with information. Meanwhile, encourage them to express their own opinions using the language they learned in the class and cultivate their ability to cooperate with others.
2) Emotional aims: Get the Ss to know more knowledge about theUKand broaden their horizons.
Key points and difficult points
1) The key point is how to enable the students to master the reading skills, such as skimming, scanning, detailed reading and so on.
2) The difficult point is how to help the students to express their thoughts using what they have learnt in the reading.
Teaching methods
To achieve the teaching aims above, I’ll adopt the following teaching methods:
1. Warming up and pre-reading
2. Task-based teaching method
3. Situational approach
4. Multi-media assistance
Teaching procedures
Step1 Leading-in and pre-reading(It includes 3tasks) (music)
1. Show the Ss some pictures about theUnited Kingdomand let them tell the names.
2. Background knowledge.
3. Discuss in groups .(A quiz )
Step2 While-reading (This step includes 3 tasks)
1.Read the title and the map, and guess what the content of the reading passage might be about.
2.Fast reading
Match the main idea of each paragraph
Para 1 Explains howEnglandis divided into three zones.
Para 2 Explains the importance of London as a cultural and political centre in theUK.
Para 3 Explains the differences in the four countries.
Para 4 Introduces the topic to the reader.
Para 5-6 Explains what the term “Great Britain” means and how it came about.
3.Tasks for careful reading
Read para2,4,5,then discuss and fill in the blanks.
Step3 Summary:The students discuss and find out the answers.
