1日本研发出新型口罩 遇新冠病毒能在紫外线下发光
Japanese scientists are developing face masks that glow under UV light if the wearer has COVID-19
A team of Japanese scientists has created a prototype(样品) for a mask filter(过滤) that glows under ultraviolet (紫外线)light and reveals traces(踪迹) of the COVID-19 virus if the wearer 1____(infect).
Scientists from the Kyoto Prefectural University(京都府立大学) say that the masks they've made contain 2_____ additional filter within its layers. When removed and sprayed with a fluorescent dye(荧光染料) 3_____(contain) antibodies(抗体), the filter will glow when placed under UV light if traces of the COVID-19 virus are detected.
According 4____ a press release from the university, the team 5_____(develop) this method by first injecting an inactive form of the COVID-19 virus into female ostriches(鸵鸟). From there, they worked to extract antibodies from the eggs of these female ostriches, 6_____(infuse) (注入)these antibodies into the fluorescent spray(荧光喷雾).
Speaking to Japanese news outlet Kyodo News, researcher Yasuhiro Tsukamoto said that he conducted experiments with 32 people 7____(infect) with COVID-19 over a 10-day timeframe. The researchers found that the masks worn by these 32 testers glowed 8_____(bright) and showed traces of the COVID-19 virus after being sprayed with the antibody spray and held under a UV light. Tsukamoto's team also noted that the glow faded over time as the patients recovered and their viral load decreased.
Tsukamoto intends 9_____(trial) the mask on 150 10______(participant) in the team's next round of testing, and hopes to get the green light from the Japanese government to sell the masks in 2022.
2 全球人口将在2064年达到顶峰
World population set to decline for the first time in centuries says study
According to a new study 1_____(publish) in the Lancet journal(《柳叶刀》), the world population 2_____( decline) for the first time in the next century.
The world’s population is currently estimated to be at 7.8 billion people. According to the estimate, the 3_____(globe) population would peak at around 9.7 billion in 2064. Then it will fall to 8.79 billion in 2100.
Due 4_____ low birth rates and aging populations, up to 23 countries, 5_____(include) Japan, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Korea, and others, might see their populations fall by more than 50%.
China is the world’s most populated country. But it will see its population drop from 1.4 billion in 2017 to 732 million in 2100.
The study noted the global trend of population decline. But it also predicted that some sections of the world would witness 6_____ increase in population.
This encompasses North Africa, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. It is likely 7_____(triple)(三倍的) in population from 1.03 billion in 2017 to 3.07 billion in 2100 over the century.
According to the study, the population of India, the world’s second-most populous country, will be 8_____(approximate) 1.09 billion in 2100.
Lead study author and Professor of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), Stein Emil Vollset, told IFLScience, “The last time that global population declined was in the mid 14th century, due to the Black Plague(黑死病). 9_____ our forecast is correct, it will be the first time population decline is driven by fertility(生育) decline, as 10_____(oppose) to events such as a pandemic or famine(饥荒).”
The fertility rate is the average number of children a woman has over her lifetime. The worldwide total fertility rate is likely to steadily drop, from 2.37 in 2017 to 1.66 in 2100. It is significantly below the minimum rate (2.1 live births per woman) necessary to maintain population levels, he added.
3 加州秃鹰“无性繁殖”,是濒危动物的“自救”之路吗?
No sex please, we're condors
Few animals have come closer to 1_____(extinct), and yet survived, than the Californian condor. By 1982, there were only 22 2_____(leave).
These relicts 3_____(round) up and brought into a captive-breeding programme that proved an 4_____(astonish) success. There are now 329 condors flying freely in western North America, and 175 more in the care of various zoos.
As the precision of those numbers suggests, these birds are among the most closely monitored in the world. It therefore came as a shock to Oliver Ryder, a geneticist, when he discovered that two of the females he was scrutinising (观察)had laid eggs unfertilised(未受精) by males, 5_____ then went on to hatch.
Parthenogenesis(孤雌生殖), as this form of male-free reproduction is known, is common in invertebrates(无脊椎动物) and not unheard of in vertebrates. But it has 6_____(rare) been recorded in birds, and when seen it has always been in circumstances 7_____ no males were around and it was therefore the only reproductive option available.
In this instance, neither chick prospered(繁荣). One failed 8_____(thrive) and probably died of starvation at the age of two. The other died of complications(并发症) from a foot injury when it was nearly eight years old.
At the moment, it is hard to know whether Dr Ryder has stumbled on(意外发现) 9_____ interesting and previously unperceived mode of avian(鸟类) reproduction, or an aberration(反常事件) of little wider 10_____(significant). But if condors, and possibly other bird species, are routinely reproducing by parthenogenesis, then some rewriting of the textbooks will definitely be in order.
