Huang Danian, the well-known Chinese geophysicist, was born in 1958 in Guangxi, China.
As a keen and able student, Huang went to the UK in 1993 to further his studies.
By the time Huang moved back to China in 2008, he had been living and working in the
UK for 15 years. He had a good job and a life there, but he gave it all up to return to home
driven by the idea that he needed to contribute to his country. As one of the world’s leading
experts in deep earth exploration technology, Huang was invited to participate in the “Thousand
Talent” programme. He took up a position at Jilin University, Changchun.
Huang was named lead scientist on China’s deep earth exploration programme, developing
advanced cameras that can see through the Earth’s crust(外壳) so that it can be analysed without
having to dig into it. He set up an advanced lab, sometimes paying for equipment with his own
money. Some described him as a “lunatic” (a “madman”), but this passion and drive enabled
Huang to push forwards China’s deep earth exploration technology into a world-leading
高二 英语 第 4 页 共 12 页
position. Huang’s devotion contributed to China’s lunar probe(月球探测器) Yutu being landed
on the moon in 2013 and the launch of the spacecrafts Shenzhou-11 and Tiangong-2 in 2016.
Huang's health also paid the price for his commitment to his work. He began having
fainting fits(昏厥) in 2012, but paid them little attention, stating he did not have time to go to
see a doctor— his work always came first. In November 2016, Huang fainted and was taken to
hospital, where he was diagnosed with cancer. The disease was so advanced that he had just a
couple of months to live.
Like the true scientist he was, Huang never gave up, but always tried to push forwards.
Even from his hospital bed, he continued his work, writing letters of reference for his colleagues
and replying to questions from his students. Huang died in January 2017, aged just 58. More
than 800 people attended his funeral to celebrate a life that burned so bright, but was so short.
24. Huang returned to China in 2008 because _________.
A. he wasn’t satisfied with the life in the UK
B. Jilin University offered him a top position
C. the “Thousand Talent” program attracted him
D. he desired to devote himself to his motherland
25. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. China’s deep earth exploration technology.
B. Huang’s great contributions to China.
C. Huang’s working attitude and style.
D. China’s aerospace development.
26. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. A large sum of money was paid to treat Huang’s illness.
B. Huang was taken to hospital after he fainted in 2012.
C. Huang worked continuously despite his poor health.
D. The working environment caused Huang’s disease.
27. Which of the following can be used to describe Huang Danian
A. Patriotic and committed. B. Passionate and patient.
C. Modest and courageous. D. Generous and honest.

Agricultural scientists in Switzerland have demonstrated the long-term effect of organic
farming methods. Organic farms use no man-made chemicals to increase crops or control
insects and disease. The study showed that organic fields produced fewer crops, on average,
高二 英语 第 5 页 共 12 页
than other fields. However, the scientists say the organic methods improved the health of the
soil and used half as much energy.
The Swiss scientists compared the effects of organic and traditional farming methods
over a period of more than twenty years. They grew crops on four fields of land in
Switzerland. Two fields were grown using traditional farming methods. The others were
grown using organic farming methods. The crops and soil use were similar in all the fields
studied.
The study found that the organic fields produced about 20% fewer crops than the other
fields. However, the farmers used less fertilizer and energy on the organic fields. They found
the organic fields were healthier.
The scientists say the organic fields had more nutrients in the soil. The soils in the organic
fields also had more biological activity than the other fields. The organic fields had more
helpful organisms and a larger number of different organisms. The organic fields had almost
two times as many insects, including helpful insects. In traditional farming, chemicals
designed to kill harmful insects also kill helpful ones.
The researchers say the findings show that organic crop production rates change little
over time, and that soil fertility increases. They say the finds suggest that organic farmers can
help the environment by increasing soil fertility.
Organic farming is becoming increasingly popular in some countries. Many people
believe that eating organic food is more healthful than eating food grown with chemicals.
Some people are willing to pay more money to buy organic food.
28. What does the study show about the organic methods
A. They have more output than other fields.
B. They use more energy than traditional ones.
C. They benefit the health of the human and the soil.
D. They can control diseases without using any chemicals.
29. In what way do the researchers carry out the experiment
A. Applying different methods. B. Using the latest technology.
C. Selecting the best seeds. D. Planting crops in special soils.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning organic fields
A. Its shortage. B. Its products.
C. Its strengths. D. Its application.
31. What can we infer from the text
高二 英语 第 6 页 共 12 页
A. Organic crop production rate increases rapidly.
B. People can’t afford organic food at present.
C. Organic farming is environment-friendly.
D. No insects exist in organic fields.

Who is smarter A human being or artificial intelligence(人工智能)
The question swept the world last week when a Google-developed program called AlphaGo
defeated the world top player, South Korean Lee Se-del, 4-1.
So, what comes next
Some people have been arguing that artificial intelligence, or AI in short, will be a bad
thing for humans. In an interview with the BBC in 2014, UK scientist Stephen Hawking
warned that “the development of full artificial intelligence could mean the end of the human
race.”
So are we really about to live in the world shown in the Terminator movies
“Not quite,” answered The Economist. After all, it’s not hard to get a computer program to
remember and produce facts. What is hard is getting computers to use their knowledge in
everyday situations.
“We think that, for the human being, things like sight and balance(视觉平衡), are
natural and ordinary in our life.” Thomas Edison, founder of Motion Figures, a company that
is bringing AI to boys, told the newspaper. “But for a robot, to walk up and down just like
human beings requires various decisions to be made every second, and it’s really difficult to
do.”
As The Economist put it, “We have a long way to go before AI can truly begin to be similar
to the human brain, even though the technology can be great.”
Meanwhile, John Markoff of The New York Times said that researchers should build
artificial intelligence to make people more effective.
“Our fate is in our own hands,” he wrote. “Since technology depends on the values of its
creators, we can make human choices that use technology to improve the world.”
32. What was the result of the match
A. Lee Se-del won AlphaGo 4-1. B. Lee Se-del was defeated.
C. Google program beat AlphaGo. D. Neither side won the match.
33. What does Thomas Edison possibly mean in his remarks
A. AI can make various decisions quickly.
高二 英语 第 7 页 共 12 页
B. AI would take the place of human beings.
C. It’s very hard for AI to beat the human brain.
D. AI does better than humans in sight and balance.
34. Who believes much has to be done to improve AI
A. Stephen Hawking. B. John Markott.
C. The New York Times. D. The Economist.
35. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph imply
A. AI will make our future out of control.
B. AI will improve the world completely.
C. AI may bring disasters to human beings.
D. AI is in the control of human beings.

It has been suggested that body language consists more than 60% of what we communicate.
36 Below are tips to help you learn how to read body language and better understand the
people you interact with.
Study the Eyes
37 When communicating with someone, pay attention to whether he or she makes
direct eye contact or looks away. Inability to make direct eye contact can indicate boredom,
disinterest, or even deceit-especially when someone looks away and to the side. If a person
looks down, on the other hand, it often indicates nervousness or submissiveness. A person' s
blinking rate can also speak volumes about what is going on internally. 38 In some cases,
increased blinking rate indicates lying-especially when accompanied by touching the face
(particularly the mouth and eyes).
Gaze at the Face-Body Language Touching Mouth or Smiling
Although people are more likely to control their facial expression, you can still pick up on
important nonverbal cues if you pay close attention. 39 There are different types of smiles,
including genuine smiles and fake smiles. A genuine smile engages the whole face, whereas a
fake smile only uses the mouth.
Pay attention to proximity
Proximity is the distance between you and the other person. 40 Standing or sitting
in close proximity to someone is perhaps one of the best indicators of rapport(融洽). On the
高二 英语 第 8 页 共 12 页
other hand, if someone backs up or moves away when you move in closer, this could be a sign
that the connection is not mutual.
A. You can tell a lot about the type of relationship two people have just by observing the
proximity between them.
B. Eye contact shows that a person is interested in what you are talking about.
C. So learning to read the nonverbal cues people send is a valuable skill.
D. Blinking rate increases when people are thinking more or are stressed.
E. Everybody will smile when they feel happy at any time.
F. Smiling is an important nonverbal cue to watch for.
G. Eye behavior can be very telling.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw
the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off.
What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique,
which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother's
favorite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together
hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks(裂纹)
that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she
asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a
neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard
he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother
was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for
work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous
eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members. Ben’s mother remained calm. She

realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with
another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go
to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied,
he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing
her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and
gave him one.

My Favorite Chinese Scientist
My favorite Chinese scientist is Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice”.
As one of China’s most famous scientists, Yuan devoted himself to studying
agriculture. His hybrid strains have helped feed not just China, but many other countries
that depend on rice as well. He received numerous awards, but he cared little for
celebrity or money. Instead, he made large donations to support agricultural research.
Yuan’s great contributions to human beings and his noble personality have
impressed me deeply, which motivates me to be excellent.

续写范文
The mother said,“This chocolate is a reward for your imagination -- a window-
opening cat!” Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed, lowered his head and
muttered a thank-you. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed
it into his hand. “This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase.”
She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family
possessions. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins, and
had to duck his head even lower. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward
himself more chocolate for any other merits he had displayed in this event. He did as
was told to, confessing that he was calm when facing the accident.
Now with some chocolate in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. His palm
and forehead sweating, nervousness welled up inside him. After what seemed a long
time, he looked up at his mother, admitted that it was not the cat but he that had
broken the vase accidentally and asked for punishment. “I’m sorry I lied to you, mum.
Please take back the chocolate.” Feeling so ashamed, Ben couldn’t hold back his
tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolate. To his surprise,
however, his mother placed the whole bag of chocolate in his hand, smiling. “Honesty
deserves the best reward, my dear.”
