Travelling alone can be frightening. I have travelled by myself many times but there was
always someone to meet me at the other end of the train or plane journey. This time was different.
Last week I had a holiday from work but none of my friends had the same week off. But I still
booked a train ride to Toronto and a bed in a hotel for one week.
高一 英语 第 5 页 共 12 页
One week by myself! Would I be lonely Quite the opposite! In fact, there were many
benefits. Firstly, I was able to do whatever I wanted. I spent hours in museums that would have
seemed boring to some of my friends. I walked all around the city, which some people may
have found too tiring. Secondly, I discovered my independence and developed map-reading
skills. Finally, being in the safe environment of a hotel with travellers also gave a great chance
to meet new people from all over the world.
However, there were some disadvantages of travelling alone. I missed having someone to
talk to. Eating in a restaurant or cooking in the hotel was less fun on my own. Besides, without
a travel partner, I won’t be able to laugh about and remember my Toronto adventure with friends
in years to come.
I am very proud of myself for travelling alone and I had a fantastic time in Toronto.
However, in the future, I think I will always prefer to travel with another person or in a small
group. Though, maybe it depends on whom I travel with—I would rather be by myself than
with someone who is lazy and difficult!
28.Why did the author travel alone in Toronto

B. Because she was asked to do so.
C. Because she wanted to know something different.

30.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 3
A. She missed her family very much.
B. She had nobody to share the experience with.
C. She couldn’t do whatever she wanted.
D. She didn’t need to cook by herself.
高一 英语 第 6 页 共 12 页
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The author is afraid of travelling alone.
B. The author enjoys travelling with her family.
C. The author prefers to travel with proper partners.
D. The author is interested in travelling in a large group.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel(争吵)with her mother that

of what her mother had said to her. Having wandered in the street for hours, she felt a little
hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had
nothing with her. She stood beside a stand(货摊)for a while, watching the middle-aged seller
busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed(叹气)and had to leave.
The seller noticed the girl and asked, “Hey, girl, do you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh, yes...but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today” said the man. “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating,
Jenny cried quietly.
“What is it ”asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness! ” said Jenny as she wiped her tears,
“Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out
of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so unkind compared to a stranger! ”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled. “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl
of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were
a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your thanks to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb(惊呆)with shock: she remembered her mother’s
familiar face and rough hands. “Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger
made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me. ”

W: Hi, George, what have you been doing lately I haven’t seen you around much.
M: Oh, I was playing the piano for a group of Germans. I just got back.
W: It must be exciting playing the piano and travelling all the time,
M: Well, playing the piano was great, but the travelling was no fun. I have just been to my manager
and he has offered me a job of playing on the coast for the summer.
W: At a seaside town
M: Yes, but I don’t think I am going to take it.
W: Why not Low payment
M: No, the money is good, about two hundred dollars a week. It’s just that we will work in the hotel

W: I wouldn’t mind being a machine for that money.

M: This is the voice message from the volunteer center. In the coming week, we are going to
work in a small and old village. The village is one hundred and four kilometers from the city center.
We need to take a high speed train to the town, and then take a bus to the village. You will live at
the volunteer center with shared rooms. We will offer you three simple Chinese meals a day. You
will have a lot to do this week. On Monday, you can take a language lesson. From Tuesday to Friday,
you will teach art at the primary school. Teaching lasts usually three hours each day. On the weekend,
you can tour around the village. Please go to the train station on time and make sure you bring
everything you need with you.
