Plagiarism is the act of representing another person's words or ideas as your own. The offense may be as small as a sentence copied from a book. Or it may be as extensive as a whole paper copied一or bought——from somebody else.
Intellectual dishonesty is nothing new. The only difference now is that the Internet has made it much simpler to steal other people 's work. Yet the same technology that makes it easy to find information to copy also makes it easier to identify plagiarism.
Teachers can use online services that compare papers to thousands of others to search for copied work. The, teacher gets a report on any passage that is similar enough to suspect plagiarism. These services. are widely used. Turnitin.com, for example, says it is used in more than 100 countries and examines more than 130,000 papers a day.
Professional writers who plagiarize can be taken to civil court and ordered to pay damages. In schools, the punishment for cheating could be a failing grade on the paper or in the course. Some schools expel(驱遂) plagiarists for a term; others, for a full academic year. Some degrees have even been withdrawn after a school later found that a student had plagiarized.
Accidental plagiarism can sometimes result from cultural differences. At Indiana University in Bloomington, 60 percent of students who use the Office of Writing Tutorial Services are non-native English speakers. The director, Joanne Vogt, says some have no idea that copying from published works is considered wrong. She says students from China, for example, may think they are offending readers if they credit other people's works. They believe that educated readers should already know where the information came from.
The more you give. credit, the less you risk charge with plagiarism. Any sentence taken directly from a source should appear inside quotation marks(引号). And even if you put those sentences into your own words, you should still give credit to where you got the information.
24. According to the passage, what is the role of the Internet in Plagiarism
A. The Internet contributes to people copying papers from others easily.
B. The Internet discourages people from choosing proper papers to copy.
C. The Internet enables people to share their papers with others.
D. The Internet helps people get their papers published online.
25. We can infer from the passage that teachers know a paper is copied when they,
A. happen 1o be familiar with the content of the paper
B. make investigations concerning the paper among students
C. search journal and magazines in the library for the original paper
D. compare the paper with many others online to search for the copied ones
26. Which of the following has NOT been mentioned as the
punishment for plagiarism
A. Withdrawal of some degrees
B. Being forced to leave school

Most adults have lower levels of concern about climate change than do young people. Yet it's adults who have the power to affect the policies contributing to climate change. Now a new study shows that adolescents may be able to raise their parents' concerns about climate change. The key: Talk about the issues and share what you've been learning at school.
Young students can understand complex subjects, says Danielle Lawson. As a scientist who studies how people communicate about climate change, Lawson is part of a team that tested the ability of adolescents to teach their parents about climate change.
For a new study, teachers used a new curriculum( 课程) with 10-to- 14-year-old students. It involved more than just lessons about climate change.-The students also took part in projects. “One example was collecting and sampling marine(海洋的) plants," Lawson says. Students wrote blog posts about what they learned and shared those with others. The students also interviewed their parents. Someone might ask her dad, for instance, what changes he'd seen in their hometown's weather over time.
“Parents of girls were more likely to show more concern about climate change after the new program was used. Other studies find that girls in this age group usually have better communication skills than boys," Lawson says. And, she adds that some parents might not have talked much about science with girls before the program. So the new program might have made girls feel more confident about sharing their concerns about climate issues.
Hilary Boudet has done similar research with children and families on lessons covering ways to save energy.“ The idea of young people engaging with their parents is an important, yet underexplored pathway for change," says Boudet. She found the new study's finding of greater impacts of daughters and the ability of kids to change the attitudes of parents interesting. However, she says that more studies would still need to be done in other places. She also wishes the team had asked people about how they might have changed their behaviors after receiving the new lessons.
Lawson is hopeful that kids can boost parents understanding of climate science. “I know how powerful kids can be," Lawson says. And, she notes, you don't need a special curriculum to discuss climate issues at home.“ Talk to your parents about what you see going on,” She says, “Don't be afraid to share your thoughts." “And I don't feel discouraged if you don't change your. parents' minds after one chat", she adds.
28. What is the importance of the new study
A. It teaches students about complex subjects.
B. It reveals the power of youths' knowledge.
C. It raises concerns of global issues at school.
D. It will influence climate change policies.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. How parents responded to kids.
B. Why girls led to better results.
C. How the study was conducted.
D. What the study had found out.
30. How does Hilary Boudet find Lawson's study
A. They covered ways to save energy.
B. There is still room for improvement.
C. It deals with completely new topics.
D. The team should focus more on boys.
31. What is a suitable title for the article
A. Speak out about climate change.
B. New school curriculum for kids.
C. Discuss more with your friends.
D. Climate change worries youths.

No one will ever know for sure what happened in those minutes before the helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant, his l3-year-old daughter. and seven other people fell into a hillside, killing everyone on board. It will take months for safety investigators to figure out what probably went wrong here. In the meantime, what this horrific crash should do is make safety investigators and national regulators take a step back and look at helicopter safety in general.
One piece of equipment lacking in this otherwise well-equipped helicopter was a terrain(地形) awareness warning system, which gives pilots visual and audible warnings when they are flying near obstacles. After a helicopter carrying eight passengers crashed into the Gulf of Mexico in 2004, the National Transportation Safety Board(NTSB) repeatedly urged the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to require terrain awareness systems on all commercial helicopters. But the FAA has never accepted that recommendation.
The NTSB also called for all emergency medical service helicopters and airplanes to have these safety systems on board. The FAA accepted the safety board's recommendation for air ambulances, noting that emergency missions are often flown in places not well known to the pilots. But an FAA spokesperson says the circumstances are different for non-emergency flights. as commercial helicopter pilots generally fly in populated( 人口密集的) places with numerous paths and landing points. According to the spokesperson, the FAA has cooperated with the industry on improving safety through new technology and policy changes. And the number of fatal accidents has declined dramatically over the last two. decades. That's great, but' it's nevertheless troubling that the NTSB's recommendation has gone largely ignored by the FAA.
After the recent crash renewed talk of terrain awareness systems, there's been massive resistance from old helicopter pilots who believe it to be a dangerous distraction when they are flying low - as helicopters often do - with good visibility. Constant audible warnings of obstacles that the pilots can see and are aware of are nothing but an annoyance, they claim.
Nevertheless, the FAA should reconsider its decision because it would give commercial pilots and their passengers another tool to enhance their safety. In fact, terrain awareness systems have been standard equipment in every Sikorsky S-76 made since 2005. The safety of everyone flying in dated commercial helicopters should be just as important.
32. Why did the author mention Kobe Bryant's case
A. To show the value of safety equipment.
B. To express his sorrows for the incident.
C. To indicate that flights are dangerous.
D. To introduce the readers to helicopters.
33. According to FAA, what makes service and commercial helicopters different
A. They require pilots with varying skills
B. Service helicopters carry more people.
C. They cover different routes and areas.
D. Service helicopters often fly at night.
34. What are old pilots' attitudes towards the terrain awareness system
A. Frightened. . B. Interested C. Optimistic. D. Distrustful.
35. What is the main idea of the article
A. Pilots should be trained for emergencies.
B. We should be concerned about air safety.
C. The terrain awareness system is useful.
D. FAA is to be blamed for plane accidents

The Rude Boy
James Selton was one of the rudest boys in the village where he lived. If a person in the . streel was well dressed, he would cry out, " Dandy(花花公子)!" If a person's clothes were dirty or torn, he would throw stones at him, and annoy him in every way.
One afternoon, just as the school was dismissed, a stranger passed through the village. His dress was plain and somewhat old, but neat and clean. He carried a cane(手杖) in his hand, on the end of which was a bag and he wore a broad-brimmed(宽边的) hat.
No sooner had James seen the stranger than he winked to his playmates, and said, "Now for some fun!" He then silently went toward the stranger from behind, and, knocking off his hat, ran away.
The man turned and saw him, but James was out of hearing before he could speak. The stranger put on his hat, and went on his way. Again did James approach, but this time, the man caught him by the arm, and held him tightly. However, he contented himself with looking at James a moment in the face. and then pushed him from him. In an attempt to mourn the victims of the Nanjing Massacre, our school held an activity on National Memorial Day, which received great attention.
All students and teachers participated, who paid silent tribute to the victims and heroes in the war. We then watched a video about the origin of National Memorial Day, making students impressive with crimes committed by invaders. While delivering speeches, some representatives said that the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country would go down in history.
The activity was thought highly of. Not only can history be passed down correctly, but also we attach more importance to our peaceful lives.
She said while he was coming through the village, some wicked boys threw stones at him.
Hearing this, James immediately realized that it was he that hurt his uncle. Shameful and frightened, he dared not step into the house. At that time, he heard his father calling him to come in. With palms sweating, he had no choice but to obey. Inside the room sat the stranger, or rather his uncle, with his forehead bound up, talking happily with his father. What a sense of shame James now felt! Hanging down his head, he entered the house.
His uncle went up to him, but quickly starting back, he cried out, "Oh! It's you!” But when his uncle saw the puzzled father, he immediately explained that he just met James in the street. In a flash, James learned that his uncle was ready to forgive him. But facing such a kind uncle, he couldn't conceal his guilt. Having confessed what he had done to his uncle, James felt relieved. He never forgot this lesson so long as he lived. It cured him entirely of his low and rude manners.
