It is infectious.”Time wrote.
Think About Things

Midday approaches in downtown Rochester, and the pigeons(鸽子) are circling high above the crossroad of Clinton Avenue and Division Street. There’re just a few of them at first, then a dozen, and then a dozen more. They keep coming from all over the city until about 100 have seemingly materialized out of thin air.
It’s lunchtime and they know the “Pigeon Man” will be there soon with a bag of seed. That’s what the locals at the corner call Michael Picow, who’s been feeding the pigeons of Rochester almost daily for the better part of 35 years.“They’re like family ,”Picow,76,says as he shakes loose seed from a 20-pound bag.“They're beautiful creatures.”
Feeding the pigeons on Division Street was a daily routine(惯例) for Picow when he had a shop around the corner on Main Street,He scaled back(缩减) his feedings to four days a week after he closed his business in 2014, driving downtown from his home in Greece just to spend a few minutes with the birds.
“I used to go seven days a week, but my wife said,‘No, it’s too much,’” Picow says.“I pull up and they’re on top of my car waiting for their breakfast. They’re on my head, they’re on my shoulder, and they’re on my bag, even.”
Picow recalls childhood friends raising pigeons on top of their apartment buildings in The Bronx. When he moved to Rochester in his forties,he rediscovered his love for the birds. At the crossroad of Clinton and Division,he execrated motorists who took the corner too fast, sometimes hitting the pigeons as they passed. It made him very angry and those motorcycle boys were a little afraid of him.
Over the years,Picow has nursed a dozen or so injured pigeons back to health in a cage he keeps in his living room. If a pigeon dies,he says he buries it.“Every time one of these guys drives like that and kills a pigeon,”Picow says,“a little piece of me dies inside.”
24.Why do pigeons appear at the crossroad of Clinton and Division at noon

Ever wondered if dogs can learn new words Researchers say yes as they have found that talented dogs may have the ability to grasp new words after hearing them only four times.
While previous evidence seems to show that most dogs do not learn words, unless eventually very well trained, a few individuals(个体) have shown some extraordinary abilities, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.
“We wanted to know under which conditions the gifted dogs may learn novel words.” said researcher Claudia Fugazza from the E tv s Loránd University in Hungary. For the study, the team got two gifted dogs, Whisky and Vicky Nina. The team exposed the dogs to the new words in two different conditions.
In the exclusion-based(基于排除的)task, presented with seven known toys and one new toy, the dogs were able to select the new toy when presented with a new name. Researchers say this proves that dogs can choose by exclusion when faced with a new word, they selected the only toy which did not have a known name.
However, this was not the way they would learn the name of the toy. In fact, when they were presented with one more equally new name to test their ability to recognize the toy by its name, the dogs got totally confused and failed.
The other condition, the social one, where the dogs played with their owners who pronounced the name of the toy while playing with the dog, proved to be the successful way to learn the name of the toy, even after hearing it only 4 times. “The rapid learning that we observed seems to equal children’s ability to learn many new words at a fast rate around the age of 18 months,” Fugazza says. “But we do not know whether the learning mechanisms(机制) behind this learning are the same for humans and dogs. ”
To test whether most dogs would learn words this way, 20 other dogs were tested in the same condition, but none of them showed any evidence of learning the toy names, confirming that the ability to learn words rapidly in the absence of formal training is very rare and is only present in a few gifted dogs.
28. What was the purpose of the study published in Scientific Reports
A. To better train dogs’ ability to learn new words.
B. To further confirm previous evidence about dogs.
C. To prove extraordinary memory abilities of gifted dogs.
D. To explore favorable conditions for gifted dogs’ new-word learning.
29. How did the dogs react when exposed to one more new name in the first condition
A. Slow to understand. B. Quick to learn. C. At a loss. D. In a panic.
30. What was found about dogs’ new-word learning in the social condition
A. Learning through playing applied to most dogs.
B. The social condition helped dogs learn new words.
C.Dogs’ new-word learning turned out to be less effective.
D. Dogs shared similar learning mechanisms with children.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Gifted Dogs can Learn New Words Rapidly
B. Dogs Identify Newly-named Toys by Exclusion
C. Dogs can Acquire Vocabulary Through Training
D. Gifted Dogs Have Similar Learning Abilities to Humans
D
We are what we eat,and what we eat shows something about what we are in return. So it shouldn’t be all that surprising that humans are now apparently eating plastic.
A small trial at the Medical University of Vienna found tiny pieces of it in the digestive(消化的) systems of people from eight different countries, including the UK. The study involved just eight people and doesn’t tell us what,if any, effect eating plastic was having on their bodies, which means more research is needed before we know what any of this really means. We already knew that fish were eating plastic. Did we really think it wouldn’t reach back up to the top of the food chain, and that the consequences of our own actions couldn’t return to affect us
Does it actually matter This study can’t yet answer that question, because all it tells us is that microplastics(微塑料)were found in human faeces(粪便). If they’re just passing through like unwelcome guests before being driven out of the body , then perhaps there’s no damage done. If there were evidence of plastics being absorbed in our internal organs, that could be a dangerous sign. And solving plastic pollution must not be delayed.
Solving plastic pollution is not as simple as some campaigners make it sound. Changing from plastic packaging to other materials would cause other environmental problems, for a start. Bottling liquids in glass rather than plastic makes them heavier, which potentially means more trips to transport them. There is a reason,in short, why we relied so much on plastic in the first place, and even if it were possible to stop using the stuff tomorrow,it would take up to l,000 years for some of what’s being produced right now to disappear completely.
There is something really mad about a society that on the one hand is obsessed with the quality of the food we put in our mouths, but on the other hand happily eats its own garbage. The war on plastic,it seems, just got personal. But just because it’s difficult , it doesn't mean we can do nothing.
32.What do we know about the study mentioned in the text
A. It involved eight people from different regions of the UK.
B.lt revealed that fish eating plastic has bad effects on their bodies.
C. It found small plastic pieces in most parts of people’s internal tissues.
D. It didn't give clear conclusions about the effects of eating plastic.
33.Why is it difficult to replace plastic with other materials
A. Other materials are heavier than plastic.
B. People depend heavily on plastic in their daily life.
C. The plastic being produced needs 1,000 years to break down.
D. Other materials are more difficult to transport.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Nothing can be done to solve the plastic problem.
B. We should eat more safe and healthy food.
C. Our society’s future is hopeless as it is so crazy.
D. Ways can be found to deal with the plastic problem.
35.The passage mainly tells us that .
A. It’s time we solved environmental pollution
B. plastic pollution is too serious to deal with
C. even our own bodies contain plastic waste
D. the earth is highly polluted by plastic

Have you ever gazed at a test question and wondered where on earth it came from You’re just certain the teacher has never covered the information, because it isn’t in your notes. 36 And furthermore, they got the question right.
37 It is a common frustration. Very few people can write fast enough or can concentrate long enough to record everything the teacher says.
As you can imagine, college lectures can be much longer and more detailed than the lectures you receive in high school. For this reason, many college students deal with the potential problem of missing critical information by developing a personalized form of shorthand (速记).
38 You don’t have to learn a squiggly-line (潦草书写的) language. You simply come up with a set of symbols or abbreviations (缩写) for common words that you find in lectures.
Developing shortcuts in your writing is not a new idea, of course. The trick is to develop a good system and to do it well. 39 Try these tips:
★Develop a list of the most commonly used words and make shortcuts for them.
★Practice your course-specific shorthand at the beginning of the term when your text is still new and you’re curious and excited about the information. Find a few interesting passages and practice writing them in shorthand.
★If possible, find a study partner to read the passages to you. 40
★Time yourself for each passage you practice. Pretty soon you’ll start to build up speed.
A. To do that, you have to practice.
B. Find the common terms for the passage.
C. We miss things when we take class notes.
D. Look through the textbooks for each course.
E. That sounds much more complicated than it really is.
F. You can get the real experience of taking notes during a lecture in this way.
G. Then, you discover that some of your classmates did record the information in their notes.

M: I can’t go with you today. I have to finish my homework here. My parents are working overtime, and I didn’t take my house keys.
Text 3
W: Mike, don’t waste water like that. If you leave the water running while you brush your teeth, you’ll waste a lot of water. Besides, water is more expensive than before.
M: Sorry, Mom. I didn’t mean to. I just forgot to turn off the tap.
Text 4
W: Seems like you’re in low spirits. What’s wrong
M: Nothing. I’m just sleepy. I’ve been staying up late watching movies every night this week.
Text 5
W: You will be away for a long time. I can’t help being worried. Do watch the food you take and take care.
M: You know I like Mexican food.
W: Yeah, but it does not like you.
Text 6
W: Sorry about the wait. I’m Doctor Green.
M: How do you do
W: Hi. I see that you’re experiencing some back pain.
M: Yes, I am. My doctor’s away on vacation. He always gives me this to reduce my pain, but I’ve run out of my pills. I wonder if, uh, you might be able to give me some.
W: You really should have a thorough checkup, but you’re the most polite patient I’ve seen all week, so I’ll break the rule for you.
Text 7
M: Hello, is that Annie
W: No, I’m one of her roommates. She’s out, you know, shopping.
M: When will she be back, do you think
W: Oh, I don’t know. Hang on a moment. I mean who wants her
M: I’m a friend of hers. Look, would you be so kind to give her a message
W: Hang on while I get a pen… OK. What’s the message
M: My name is Kris Schuster, Room 688, the Terminal Hotel, Washington. I’ll go to see her next week.
W: Does she know your phone number
M: It’s 4934975. You won’t forget to tell her it’s urgent, will you
W: Don’t worry. I’ll tell her.
M: Thanks. Bye-bye.
Text 8
W: It’s Jane’s birthday today. We are going to the cinema after school. Want to go
M: After school I have got to study for the math test tomorrow.
W: Don’t worry. The test will be easy.
M: Well, I don’t know. When will the film start
W: At 4:45.
M: I think I’ll stay back in school and do some review first, then I will join you.
W: OK. We’ll get the tickets first. You meet us at Kristy’s Corner a quarter earlier before the film starts. We’ll be having some ice-cream there before the film starts.
M: OK. But I still want to go to the bookstore before the film starts. There is a sale and I’d like to get a book.
Text 9
W: Have you finished the report on private schools
M: Not yet. You know, I have two other articles to write and the editor has just sent me out to report on the big fire. I have got to go slow.
W: Yeah. Speaking of the big fire, I’d like to know the exact number of victims.
M: Unfortunately, 5 people died. 28 people are still in hospital. Among the dead, 2 are children.
W: Oh… Poor kids! Didn’t they call the firefighters to help
M: I’m not sure about that. They may have tried to put out the fire, but it was impossible to control it. With the help of the firefighters, the fire was finally brought under control, but had still caused great damage.
W: I’m wondering what caused the fire.
M: It was a cigarette end that burnt the carpet up when a man was sleeping soundly on the sofa. His son was playing with his cigarette end by the table. He threw the cigarette end on the carpet.
W: How could a kid get the cigarette!
M: That is the point. The man was drunk and he died in his dream.
Text 10
W: During the summer you should be even more careful than usual because food goes bad faster in hot weather than in cold weather. When you buy frozen and refrigerated foods, don’t make long stops on your way home because frozen foods could become soft or warm. Using bags helps keep food cold until you can get home. Milk and milk products should be refrigerated immediately. When camping or picnicking or at any time when refrigeration can’t be made use of, use special dry foods. Don’t leave food in a hot car. Picnic favorites like meat, chicken and eggs should be kept in a cooler box. Above all, if the food doesn’t seem to be normal in smell or appearance, throw it away immediately. Don’t taste it.
