Then the worst thing happened. The car slipped on the slippery and icy road, and the two front wheels went over the edge. At the very moment, we were seized with panic. I sat upright, my body rigid with fear. I was aware that Jose was trembling. Thankfully, we were very lucky that the rest of the car didn’t go over the edge. We sat in the car for about half an hour, not daring to move and freezing cold. No other cars even passed by, until suddenly a car came round the corner and out jumped three strong men.
Without saying a word, the three men surrounded our car. To our amazement, they lifted the car back on the road. When we got out to thank them, they just repeated “My pleasure” several times, then got back into their car and drove off . We got back into our car and continued down the side of Mt Teide. I have never felt so relieved in my life as I felt when we reached the town — and the petrol station — at the bottom. We were so grateful to those kind people for their help.

M: Oh, they do serve meat too, very good roast meat and fish and for dessert they’ve got cakes that are a bit like Turkish ones.

M: That sounds good.
W: Well, we have two hundreds, hundreds, fifties and twenties. And I recommend you to take some small bills, so you can spend them in Spain very easily.

W: My musical inspiration is the English singer, Leona Lewis. One reason I admire her is that she’s got a great voice. She also inspires me because she is so determined and ambitious. Leona was born in London in 1985. She dreamed of a career in music from an early age. She wrote her first song at the age of twelve and made her first recording when she was only fifteen years old. In 2006, she became the first female winner of the British talent show, The X-Factor and she made her first album, Spirit. Probably her greatest achievement was when she sang at the Olympic closing ceremony in Beijing in 2008 in front of a TV audience of three billion people. Another reason I admire her is that she is not only a talented and successful singer, she is also a very brave person. She always speaks her mind on important issues such as cancer awareness and vegetarianism. To sum up, Leona Lewis is my musical inspiration and an inspiration to all young people because she has already achieved so many great things in her career. She has sold millions of albums; she has won many music awards and she has appeared with artists like Take That and Mariah Carey第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分 50 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 37.5 分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Revolutionary Glasses Make It Safe to Drive at Night
Did you know that more than 40 percent of all deadly car accidents occur at night A recent breakthrough eyeglass technology has made it safe to drive at night. It’s almost like having “X-ray” vision (视力) while driving.
Spend money on your safety and peace of mind behind the wheel with a pair of these cutting-edge night driving glasses. The amount of car accidents that occur at night is mostly the result of poor visibility. Even with 60% less traffic on the road at night, accidents still happen due to blinding light and just overall bad driving visibility.
Imagine being able to clearly see what’s in front of you and what’s approaching, even if it’s very dark and foggy. Once you start wearing ClearView night glasses, you’ll feel much more
confident and safe driving when it’s getting dark. With ClearView you will notice an instant reduction in strong light from oncoming traffic and bright street lights.
This is because the special yellow lens tint (镜片色彩) can block strong blue light, and increase contrast (对比). ClearView passes the global traffic light standard for safer sharper vision at night with flying colors.
You can start using ClearView immediately even if you wear glasses. Simply place ClearView on top of your glasses and be amazed by the difference this technology makes!
Is it worth it Absolutely! Keep a pair in each of your cars to make sure you have your glasses at hand when night comes. If you care about your family’s safety then this is a no-brainer.

MacArthur’s love for sailing dates back to when she was just four years of age, when she first got the opportunity to have a try. “I’ll never forget that feeling as a kid of setting foot on a boat for the first time,” MacArthur said. “It kind of struck me that this boat had everything we needed to take us anywhere in the world. And as a child, that opened up everything,” she explained how it felt like the “greatest sense of freedom”.
This experience lighted a passion (热爱) within MacArthur. She knew then that she wanted to sail around the world. She had no idea how to achieve it — growing up in the countryside, it wasn’t the most obvious career (事业) path — but she knew that was what she wanted to do at some stage. So she acquired knowledge and saved up for years to seek a career in sailing. She would have potato and beans every day for eight years so that she could save up to buy the right equipment. By reaching certain financial goals and asking technical questions about sailing, MacArthur felt as though she was getting closer to her ambitions.
“When you know where you’re going, you can actually get there — even if it seems impossible. The impossible could be possible and aiming high is not necessarily such a crazy thing to do.” And it seems that MacArthur’s drive to become a sailor went beyond her expectations. At the age of 24, she started to receive media attention after participating in the Vendee Globe, a single-handed non-stop yacht (帆船) race that goes around the world. She came in second place.
Some three to four years later, MacArthur chose to sail for 71 days and 14 hours, covering more than 26,000 miles during the course of her journey. This led to MacArthur scoring a new world record in 2005, as the fastest person to sail around the globe single-handedly. While this record has since been surpassed, MacArthur is still considered as Britain’s most successful off shore racer.

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei officially launched the 2.0 version of its self-developed operating system (OS) on Wednesday night, the HarmonyOS. The move paved the way for the Chinese firm to challenge Google’s and Apple’s role in current and future OS ecosystems.
Among the major strong points, the HarmonyOS, with a highly scalable(可扩展的)platform, can be applied to various devices, including smart phones, computers, and other electronic devices, the company said.
Analysts said the OS will do a lot to promote Huawei’s change into being a software service provider. Huawei’s founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the company was focusing on software because future development in the field was basically “out of US control and we will have greater independence and autonomy(自主权)”. Ren called on the company’s staff to “dare to lead the world” in software.
“The success of a software system will always have to rely on hardware(硬件), but nowadays, Huawei doesn’t have enough hardware to support its software ambitions — that’s the most difficult part,” said Jiang Junmu, chief writer at a news website. Once as the world’s largest smart phone maker, Huawei’s national smart phone market share (份额)has continued to drop in recent months. Liang Zhenpeng, an industry analyst, said that as an OS designed for the Internet of Things(IoT) era, the HarmonyOS may need more time and equipment to test than the OS for smart phones, and that will take at least two to three years.
Moreover, Liang noted that an ecosystem will always be the decisive factor for the success of an operating system. “Does the HarmonyOS have enough applications that can attract consumers to update to the OS That’s a question,” Liang said. So far, more than 300 application and service partners, 1000 hardware partners, and 500,000 developers have joined in the set-up of the Harmony ecosystem.
28. What advantage does the HarmonyOS have over other operating systems
A. It provides users with a secure experience.
B. It operates faster than Google system.
C. It works on a wide range of equipment.
D. It has different versions in different countries.
29. What can you infer from Ren Zhengfei’s words
A. Huawei’s change is challenging.
B. Huawei is seeking a new software service provider.
C. The company’s staff need to improve their skills.
D. Huawei will break its dependence on the US.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The difficulties in promoting the HarmonyOS.
B. The success of developing the HarmonyOS.
C. Smartphone sales in the national market.
D. The future software ambition of Huawei.
31. What does Liang expect partners and developers to do
A. Create enough applications.
B. Update the original devices.
C. Cooperate with experts in various fields.
D. Build the HarmonyOS ecosystem.

We often hear about schools cutting back on bus routes to save money, yet plenty of communities (社区) have their buses stopping almost as often as the mail truck. While the presence of sidewalks, and the safety of area roads, play a role in who gets house-to-house pickup or end-of-the-street pickup, Peter Mannella, director at the New York Association for Pupil Transportation says community culture can play an even larger role in the transportation situation.
For example: Several years ago, Bethlehem tried spacing out its stops, says Mannella. The parents were unhappy, expressed as much and, within three days, the routes were back to their original frequency. “You can say ‘We are going to save $100,000 by not stopping at every house,’ but parents don’t want their kids walking,” Mannella says. As you’d expect, this is especially true in bad weather or during winter.
As a student in the 1980s, we walked to our stops. The neighborhood wait-spot was a good quarter mile away. Parents didn’t make a fuss (大惊小怪), and no child was injured. In fact, the walking was good — it woke us up each morning. Not to mention, the sense of community that came with hanging out together each morning waiting for bus No. 23 to roll up and take us all to school.
Thing is, a lot has changed since the 1980s. Too many people are texting and driving, making them as dangerous on the roads as drunken drivers. And, with reduced work forces at many companies, parents often work longer hours, meaning they aren’t around to guard their kids to and from stops like many parents did when we were growing up.
So I’ll give them an understanding pass on not wanting their children to walk a mile each way to get to and from school. I can’t agree with the complaints (抱怨) of having kids walk to a community neighborhood stop, though. If you worry they’re going to be cold, get them a hat. If you fear they may miss the bus, send them out the door five minutes earlier.
32. What do we know about Bethlehem’s plan
A. It ended up in failure. B. It lasted for a long time.
C. It wasn’t put into practice. D. It saved a lot of money
33. What can we learn about students in the 1980s from paragraph 3
A. They woke up early in the morning.
B. They were driven to school by parents.
C. They benefited by walking to a neighborhood stop.
D. They usually hung out with their neighbors.
34. Why are today’s parents unwilling to let their children walk to a neighborhood stop
A. The house-to-house pickup is available. B. The weather conditions are awful in winter.
C. Children might be late for school. D. Drivers do not concentrate on driving.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards children walking to bus stops
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Supportive. D. Critical.

The UK is the second most popular destination for international third-level students after the US. Experts suggest that this popularity is because of the good name UK universities have for their excellent teaching methods and learning facilities (设施). 36 International students graduating from UK universities are more likely to get better jobs and earn higher salaries than those who studied at home.
But the big question for students thinking about studying in the UK is: how much does it all cost The answer, unfortunately, is: a lot! The average cost of study for international students is just under 12,000 in 2016. 37 You also have to add in the cost of living, which is around the same amount again.
The greatest expense is accommodation, with yearly rent at around 5,000. Then there’s food followed by personal items (物品). So it really isn’t hard to see how students find themselves spending approximately 12,000 in total on living costs alone. 38 In major cities, it tends to be much more.
39 This means you are usually paying for three instead of four years’ study — saving one year’s expense.
So, is it worth travelling to the UK for third-level study The short answer is: yes. 40 If you do badly, get poor grades or find life in the UK hard to deal with, your adventure abroad will be a very expensive mistake.
A. It has several advantages.
B. And it doesn’t end there.
C. In fact, this is just the average cost
D..However, it is certainly a big risk.
E. You can enjoy a better quality of life.
F. Another reason is the performance of graduates.
G. On the other hand, most UK degrees are a year shorter than US one

Holidays come and go in our lives. While some of those holidays feel really “special” to us, the others make us feel really “disappointed”. However, today, I would like to talk about one such holiday that I would call the “most frightening” one of my life.
This heart-stopping moment I’ve never experienced happened while I was spending Christmas in Tenerife, the largest of the seven Canary Islands and a great place to travel. My brother Jose was working there and unfortunately, he couldn’t get any time to come home, so I spent the holiday with him.
Of course, I had a lot of fun with my brother. We went to watch movies in the theatre and we ate dinners in many restaurants with specialties. As there were so many wonderful places to visit, we often returned home very late. I didn’t want to miss out on all the fun!
On the last day of my visit, we decided to go up Mt Teide — a volcano in the centre of the island and officially the second largest mountain in Europe. We hired a little car for the day — I couldn’t drive at the time, but my brother could.
We set off in brilliant sunshine, before long it got much colder and by the time we reached there it was snowing. It was freezing outside. What is more, all the restaurants, hotels and petrol stations at the top of the mountain were shut. It was then that we realized that we had almost run out of petrol. That was particularly desperate because I had to catch the plane home that evening, and if not, I would have to pay for a new ticket. So Jose decided to do something extremely dangerous — to switch off the engine of the car and freewheel down the other side of the mountain. He did it for several kilometers, along hairpin bends (急转弯) on dangerous icy roads. I was absolutely scared to death, but for some reason I didn’t tell him to stop.
