I have read with interest the opinion of one woman who attended a high school basketball game at Three Oaks and came away thinking the students were disrespectful (不尊敬). I have a very different point of view. Respect does not equal quiet, although a certain generation of people would disagree. Respect is a deep admiration (赞赏) for someone or something because of their abilities or achievements and a regard for the wishes and traditions of others.
In my opinion, the students at Three Oaks High School were the very picture of respect. They brought their team and school spirit to show their admiration for their basketball team. This is something that is desperately (极度地) lacking in many schools — SPIRIT. I am so happy to say it is alive at Three Oaks. They cheered and made noise in a gymnasium, they jumped up and down when their team scored, they groaned (叹息) when they made mistakes, but kept the team’s spirits up by cheering, even when it was evident they were going to lose. They kept the tradition of cheering and respect by showing due regard to a parent who came over and spoke to them about jumping too far onto the court. They listened and followed his instructions. He also happened to be the coach of another team whose fans were doing nothing.
These kids were doing what they were supposed to do, in a place they were supposed to do it. It was not a library, or a mall; it was a sports match. I would ask the lady who wrote the letter to the editor if she has been to any professional sporting events. I remember watching a Super Bowl a few years ago and the quarterback(四分卫) could hardly make his calls heard to the guy standing right in front of him. You know what he said about it later, that it was amazing to have the fans cheering so loud.
I wish both these teams the best of luck. It was an amazing game. Even though we lost, we left with our spirits high, ready for the next time our teams meet. It is going to be another great game of basketball.
14.Why did the woman think the students were disrespectful
A. They made a lot of noise.
B. They were rude to the other team.
C. They showed no respect for traditions.
D. They turned a blind eye to her opinion.
15.How did the students respond to another team’s coach
A. They did nothing. B. They jumped quickly.
C. They did as he asked. D. They cheered for his team.
16.What did the quarterback think of the fans cheering
A. He was angered by it.
B. He thought highly of it.
C. He believed they overdid it (做得太过分了).
D. He thought they should be quiet.
17.What is important in a sports game in the author’s opinion
A. Spirit. B. Winning. C. Luck. D. Preparation.

Grandma Pugh sized up the baby like a pig at the farmers’ market. There was a pause and then she pronounced. “He’s got nice long legs.” She clapped her hands once in approval (赞许). But then she frowned and leaned forward. Everyone waited anxiously. The baby had opened his eyes and was staring up. “But those cross eyes won’t do,” she declared firmly, shaking her head in disappointment.
That had been Freddie Pilcher’s first meeting with Grandma Pugh. Since then, ten years had passed. Much to his grandmother’s satisfaction, she’d been proven right about the boy’s legs. He was a regular beanpole. Grandma Pugh had also been correct about his eyes. Freddie had been wearing glasses to correct his vision since he was two years old. His current pair was thick, and cheap-looking, but at least he could see.
Freddie not only had poor eyesight, but he was also clumsy. He wasn’t good at schoolwork either. But there was one thing that the boy was good at and it was all on account of the length of his legs. He could jump.
Freddie was the best jumper in school. Not only could he leap the furthest but also the highest. At breaktimes, he entertained the little ones by leaping over the school wall into Mrs Hobson’s garden and then rapidly jumping back. She had been up to see the head teacher several times because somebody had been crushing (压伤) her vegetables.
It was badgers (獾), Freddie suggested, when questioned by Miss Harpy — definitely badgers; no doubt about it. His dad had terrible problems with badgers. Only last week he had lost two rows of carrots. Freddie had woken one night and heard them tearing through the garden, a whole herd of them. They rooted up the lawn and dug up the vegetables. Terrible things, badgers. All the other children nodded their heads wisely. There was a moment’s pause in Class Three as everyone thought about the dreadful damage that badgers could do.
18. What do we know about Grandma Pugh from Paragraph 1
A. She was present at the birth of baby Freddie.
B. She was unwilling to listen to the ideas of others.
C. She was a figure of great importance in the family.
D. She valued physical appearance over all other things.
19. Why did Freddie jump over the school wall
A. To make his teacher angry. B. To escape from school.
C. To amuse his schoolmates. D. To damage Mrs Hobson’s vegetables.
20. Which of the following best describes Freddie’s physical appearance
A. B.
C. D.
21. Why does Freddie talk about badgers in the final paragraph
A. To warn the teacher about the danger of the badgers.
B. To remind the class of the damage done by the badgers.
C. To describe what happened to his father’s garden.
D. To make up an excuse for the cause of the damage.

Giving children music lessons won’t just lead them to a world of melody - it could also greatly improve their language skills.
While numerous studies have shown that learning an instrument can impact things like language ability, it wasn’t understood if this was a side effect of a general improvement to cognitive skills, or something that directly affected language processing.
Now, we know more about that, from a study of 74 Chinese kindergarten children, led by neuroscientist Robert Desimone. “The children did show improvements in word discrimination (辨别),particularly for consonants(声母),”explains Desimone.
For the study, Desimone’s team randomly divided the Mandarin-speaking children into three groups. One group received a 45-minute piano lesson three times a week, while another received extra reading instruction classes. The third group acted as controls, taking no extra lessons beyond their usual routine. The classes lasted for six months, after which the children were tested on their ability to discriminate words based on differences in tone, consonants, or vowels.
The test results showed that the children who had taken piano lessons performed significantly better at discriminating between words, compared against the children who took extra reading pared to the control group, both the music learners and the extra reading group did better in discriminating words.
To learn why these differences happen, the researchers studied the children’s brain activity via electroencephalography (EEG) and found the piano group showed greater sensitivity to tonal changes. The thinking goes, having music lessons helped develop this tonal sensitivity, which partly explains better word discrimination.
It’s also worth emphasizing that the musical education helped these children outperform their peers in language tests—even beyond the results of kids who took extra reading classes. “It’s better than extra reading. That means schools could invest (投资) in music,” Desimone says.
22. What did previous studies show
A. Instruments learning helps language ability.
B. Language is a side effect of cognitive skills.
C. Learning an instrument slows down language processing.
D. Extra reading is needed to improve language skills.
23. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Why the study was carried out.
B. How differently the students acted.
C. How the study was carried out.
D. How the groups were divided.
24. According to paragraph 6,why were there differences in word discrimination
A. Because of the limitation of brain activity.
B. Because of electroencephalography.
C. Because of tonal changes between different groups.
D. Because of different levels of tonal sensitivity.
25. What does the underline word “outperform” in paragraph 7 mean
A. Compare with. B. Invest in.
C. Do better than. D. Differ from.

Dear Peter,
I’ve received your letter and I’m sorry that you are under great pressure. You are fully understood because I had this experience before. Just don’t worry.
I still remember struggling to find time for everything I wished to accomplish. I was playing the piano for the singing group with an important competition on its way. I couldn’t miss any practice and meanwhile there was much homework to do! I nearly broke down under pressure. Exactly at this point, however, I discovered it impossible to achieve perfection. I just needed to strike a balance between studies and hobbies. That was how tension was removed finally.
There are many ways to relax, such as doing sports and listening to music. When it comes to my own experience, being realistic and adjusting the goal to suit the situation can definitely reduce stress.
I hope you find this useful. Cheer up and you will be refreshed!
Best wishes!
