Chinese people are angry. Since March, some Western companies, including H&M and Nike, have come under the spotlight (受到关注). They said they will stop using cotton from Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
They said they are following industry requirements set by the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI,良好棉花发展协会). It is a Switzerland-based cotton organization with 2,100 members worldwide, including famous brands like Nike, Adidas and Burberry. Recently, the BCI said forced labor (强迫劳动) might be used in Xinjiang.
This is a complete lie, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The so-called “Xinjiang Uygur question” is nothing but way for the US to weaken China from the inside, said Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying on March 26.
Many BCI council members are from the US and Europe. Member fees (会员费) are the main financial (财务的) source for BCI, so brand members from these countries have great influence.
In fact, China is protecting human rights in the region, China Daily noted. The government has been organizing job offerings for cotton field owners in Xinjiang, as well as improving local people’s lives. The region’s cotton and textile (纺织) industry has created jobs for more than 600,000 local people. In 2020, the per capita disposable income (人均可支配收入) for residents living in cities and towns of Xinjiang was 34,838 yuan, 2.41 times that of 2010.
China is the world’s second-largest cotton producer and Xinjiang accounts for nearly 90 percent of the country’s cotton output (产量). However, the increases in China’s cotton production and the growing textile industry are making some in the US and the West nervous, Xinhua said. Although the BCI sets the rules for the global cotton industry, its move was driven by pressure from these countries.
“It’s time to end the ‘drama (闹剧)’ from the US side,” Hua noted.

Any parent can tell you that children have an ability to get into mischief (顽皮). But when they get into some supernatural (超自然的) trouble, they’ll need help to get things back to normal. Author Hélène Schweiger tells a story of finding magic in her book The Magic Pond.
The story begins with twins Danielka and Jirik, who sneak out (偷偷溜出) one night to look at the full moon. When they reach a pond, Jirik looks at the reflection of the moon on the water. All of a sudden, Jirik is turned into a frog!
Unsure of how to fix this, the twins turn to their mother, but she’s just as stumped (被难住的) as they are. Fortunately, an elf (精灵) is happy to help them, but they’ll have to work together to succeed.
The Magic Pond takes the reader on a mysterious journey. But even with the magical creatures (生物) that we meet throughout, it is the human family that carries the heart of the story. The twins argue and joke just like any pair of twins would. It’s clear that Danielka and Jirik share a close bond.
When it comes to imagination, the sky’s the limit (没有限制) to what kids can believe. Danielka and Jirik accept the magic they see without any doubt. Openness to new ideas help Jirik change back to his human form.
Hélène Schweiger reminds us that for all the trouble that children can get into, it’s a part of their development as they learn to understand the world around them. Childhood mischief is a necessary part of their childlike wonder, and in the end, their curiosity is a valuable part of what makes children’s imaginations so powerful.

The following were three good officials in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC).
Zichan was the prime minister of the State of Zheng. He was known for making changes to the state in all aspects to make it stronger. While doing this, he listened to the ideas of ordinary people. He later made the law known to the public by carving (刻) them on bronze ding (青铜鼎). Such fair and open methods won the hearts of people.
Zijian, who lived in the State of Lu, was an official in Chanfu, which is in today’s Shandong province. Believing in non-action (无为), he hired people of integrity (贤人) to help him. Though he spent much of his time playing music, people there lived a peaceful life and thought he did a good job of managing the region.
Then there was Ximen Bao in the Wei State. He served Ye County, which is in today’s Hebei province. There, every year a girl had been given to the so-called River God as his bride (新娘). A witch (巫婆) and several dishonest officials said this could stop floods from happening. Ximen Bao stopped them by throwing them into the river. Then he built canals (运河) along the river to stop the flooding for real.

BOOM! That’s a word we often use to describe a loud sound. It’s also part of the term “sonic boom (音爆)”, which is something that happens when air is pushed so strongly and quickly that it creates a loud noise.
On March 20, a rare daytime meteor (流星) created a sonic boom over parts of the UK and France, according to Live Science. The meteor flew through the sky so fast that it could hardly be seen – but it could definitely be heard.
So how exactly are sonic booms made You can think of air as being like water. When something moves through water, you can see ripples (波纹). If the object moves very quickly, the ripples start to run into each other.
The same thing happens in the air, even if it can’t be seen. When the object moves faster than the speed of sound, the air is pushed hard, and it compresses (压缩) like the ripples on water. This will create a sound wave that is very loud, which is a sonic boom.
In fact, lots of things can make sonic booms. When you go to the park and see people play with whips and tops (鞭子和陀螺), you might hear a tiny sonic boom when they crack the whip. Aircraft that travel faster than the speed of sound can also make sonic booms.
A strong sonic boom can cause damage to windows or buildings, although the possibility of this is very low, according to the US Air Force. The loud sound can also disturb (影响) people on the ground and even cause hearing loss. That’s why supersonic aircraft are only allowed in times of war.

3. What do we know from the last paragraph
A. Sonic booms might cause hearing problems.
B. A tiny sonic boom can easily break a window.
C. It is common to hear sonic booms on the street.
D. Sonic booms are used to fight enemies during wartime.
4. How can an aircraft create sonic booms
A. By flying very high in the sky.
B. By flying through a thick cloud.
