Twenty years have passed since one of the world’s worst terrorist attacks (恐怖袭击) took place.u On Sept 11, a memorial (纪念仪式) of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks was held in New York. US President Joe Biden attended the ceremony and called for national unity (团结).
On Sept 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked (劫持) four airplanes. Two flew into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York, and another into the Pentagon (五角大楼, 美国国防部所在地). The fourth one crashed (坠毁) into a field in Pennsylvania.

Twenty years later, the world order is “no better off” and the US is “certainly much poorer off – reputationally and fiscally – (在声誉和财政上)”, said Sourabh Gupta, a senior researcher at the Institute for China-America Studies.

Looking for something new to read Check out the English writer W. Somerset Maugham.
Maugham has lately gotten popular on Chinese social media, reported China Daily. Chinese people like many of his writings. That makes sense. Maugham’s words are easy to relate (联系) to. They are even easier to understand.
For example, “There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”
With the above line, Maugham says nobody knows how to write a novel – not even himself, a famous novelist!
Where did Maugham get this uncommon way of looking at the world He had a lot of uncommon life experiences. He grew up as an orphan (孤儿). He was a doctor until his first novel became a hit (成功). He then became a famous playwright (剧作家). During World War I, he worked as a spy (间谍). Later, he traveled around Southeast Asia. All of these things would appear in his novels.
Maugham’s most famous work is the novel Of Human Bondage. It’s about a young man searching for the meaning of life and finding that the world is cruel (残酷的). Chinese readers have fallen in love with another novel, The Moon and Sixpence. It is based on the life of French painter Paul Gauguin.
Young readers may prefer his many short stories. They show the unpredictability (不可预测性) of human actions. According to Britannica, Maugham believed that people are unpredictable and forever trapped (被困住) with their emotions (情感). By joking about life’s troubles, his stories mix the silly and the serious.

In Chinese culture, the color red stands for many good things, for example, happiness. But writing names and letters with red pens is usually avoided. Why
A
In ancient times, red was the symbol of power. Not everyone could write with red pens – only emperors. They would reply to officials’ memorials (奏折) with red pens. The red ink that emperors used was made of cinnabar (朱砂). So their replies were known as zhupi (朱批).
Writing with red pens was also related to death. In ancient China, the criminals (罪犯) who were sentenced (判刑) to death signed their names with red pens. The records of criminals’ names were all written in red words. Names on the tombstones (墓碑) were red as well. Therefore, it was thought to be unlucky to write names with red pens.
Since red words carry bad meanings, people don’t write letters with red pens. If you write to friends or family members with red pens, it means you want to break up with them.
Nowadays, red pens are used for proof-reading (校对). Teachers mark students’ homework with red pens. So do editors (编辑) who need to correct mistakes in newspapers and magazines. But writing names or letters with red pens is still a bad idea to many people.

Have you ever imagined going inside of a video game That dream may soon become real. It’s called the “metaverse”.
The metaverse is a shared virtual (虚拟的) 3D world, or worlds. The word is a combination (结合) of “meta”, which means beyond, and “verse”, which refers to “universe”. The word first appeared in a 1992 science fiction book called Snow Crash. In this story, people wear virtual reality (VR) headsets to see and join the metaverse.
Now, what happens in the book is becoming a reality. Wearing a VR headset, you can meet other people wherever they are. You can work and play with them. It will feel real because the technology can simulate (模拟) our senses: vision (视觉), hearing, touch, and even smell.
“We’re talking about creating another reality, another world, that’s as rich as the real world,” said Rev Lebaredian, vice president of simulation technology at NVIDIA, a US tech company.
So, what can you do inside of the metaverse Your location (位置) will no longer matter, says VOA News. In the metaverse, “people … would be connected at all times ...” You can meet friends from other countries and go on a virtual beach vacation together. But forget Thailand – you can go to the beach on the moon, or anywhere else you can imagine. Can’t find a friend to play basketball Jump into the metaverse and find some friends to play with or go to a concert!
Cathy Hackl, an expert in metaverse technology, said her son’s first concert was inside of a video game. “Just because it happened in [a video game], it didn’t make it less real for him,” she said.
Perhaps the metaverse will change our idea of what is real.
