Chen Xue, a woman from Liaoning province, listens to her favorite singer’s songs over and over every morning. This helps lift his rankings (排名) on different social media sites. Chen, along with 1,000 other members of a fan club, has also spent lots of money buying the singer’s albums and crowdfunding (众筹) for his billboards (广告牌), Xinhua reported.
What Chen and her club members do mirrors the rise of fan culture, or “fan quan” culture, in China.uFan quan, meaning “fan circles”, are highly organized groups of loyal (忠实的) fans. They use their time and money to make their “idols”, usually pop singers or actors, as popular and influential as possible.
Fan circle members are mostly members of Generation Z (those born between 1995 and 2009). In 2020, about 8 percent of China’s 183 million underage internet users have supported stars in some way, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.
However, fan loyalty can quickly go down a dark path. Some blindly follow their idols. They attack (攻击) or even bully (欺侮) others online. They sometimes spread rumors (谣言) about other celebrities (名人). To buy expensive gifts for their idols, they crowdfund in fan clubs. Some underage fans even steal their parents’ money to do so, Xinhua reported.
In June, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) started a campaign (行动) called “Clear and Bright” to clean up online fan clubs. On Aug 23, after an online “fight” between the fans of two celebrities, Sina Weibo silenced (禁言) 100 accounts (账号) and removed (删除) 3,770 posts.
After this happened, the CAC brought out 10 new guidelines. According to the guidelines, teenagers are not allowed to take leading roles in fan clubs. They should not use money to support celebrities, either.
Choose the answer:
1. “Fan quan” members _____.
A. are usually from rich families
B. support their idols secretly
C. often change their favorite idols
D. are highly organized
2. About _____ teenage internet users joined in supportive activities for stars.
A. 8 million B. 14 million
C. 168 million D. 183 million
3. Paragraph 4 is mainly about _____.
A. the problems caused by “fan quan” culture
B. the downside of the popularity of pop culture
C. what “fan quan” culture means to teenagers
D. why members of Generation Z like to join “fan quan”
4. With the new CAC guidelines, teenagers are no longer allowed to _____.
A. speak for their idols online
B. support their idols’ work

D. join any kind of fan club

Since its publication in 1908, Anne of Green Gables (《绿山墙的安妮》) has been a favorite book of teenagers all over the world. What it teaches us is simple: How to grow up to be a happy and useful person.
Anne is an 11-year-old orphan (孤儿) who arrives in the town of Avonlea, Canada. She helps Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert, a brother and sister, on their farm.
At first, Mathew and Marilla hope to adopt (收养) a boy, not a thin girl. Will she be of any use on the farm It seems unlikely: Anne is very imaginative, talkative and easily distracted (分心的). That’s not what is needed on a farm.
And yet, Anne proves (证明) that she can actually be useful. She works really hard. But she doesn’t lose her powerful sense of fun – and this is why readers love the story. She doesn’t become “a good girl”, if “good girl” means knowing only how to work and live unhappily. We see Anne’s love for life everywhere. She knows how to enjoy herself, whether it’s by eating ice cream or trying on a new dress.v
Many stories for children are written to tell them how to behave (表现) well. Usually, it means doing one’s duty (责任) and not having any fun. But that’s not the kind of story Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery wanted to tell. The book gives readers a helping hand rather than try to scare them into being “good” girls and boys.
Choose the answer:
1. Mathew and Marilla want Anne to be _____.
A. useful B. funny
C. brave D. outgoing
2. What kind of person is Anne
A. She is not a good worker.
B. She knows how to work and live happily.
C. She likes to make fun of others.
D. She loves to work all the time.

D. Why girls are more useful than boys.

Hogwarts from Harry Potter, Autobots (汽车人) from Transformers … Do you want to see your favorite movie scenes become real China’s first Universal Studios theme park – Universal Beijing Resort (UBR) – will open on Sept 20. It’s the biggest Universal Studios theme park in the world.
To attract more visitors, UBR has added Chinese features (特色) and provided new services, according to the park’s managers (管理者).
For example, the park has an area based on the Kung Fu Panda movie series for the first time in its history. It features many elements (元素) from Chinese culture. The area is decorated with lanterns and dragons. “It’s like a night market during the Tang Dynasty,” said Lu Peiyao, 26, who got to visit the park early.
Designers also added new characters to this area, including Master Beaver (海狸大师) and Master Woodpecker (啄木鸟大师). Similarly, a new Autobot character was made for the park’s biggest roller coaster, the Decepticoaster (霸天虎过山车), at the Transformers Metrobase.
Visitors to the park can enjoy a musical based on the How to Train Your Dragon (《驯龙高手》) movie series. You can’t see it at other Universal Studios theme parks. It has stunts (特技), dancing and music, bringing the original story to the stage.
New technologies such as 5G internet, virtual reality (虚拟现实), and 4D movies are being used to give visitors a great experience. A peach tree at the Kung Fu Panda land can change colors thanks to 360-degree projection lighting (投影). Leading tech companies Alibaba and Tencent are offering support to UBR as well, making visits more convenient. For example, visitors can check wait times in each area with an app.

Six hours of walking in space! On August 20, Chinese astronauts Liu Boming and Nie Haisheng did the second spacewalk of the Shenzhou XII mission (任务). They set up equipment (设备) and lifted a camera outside the Tiangong space station.
Spacewalks can be dangerous. There is no air in space, of course. And it’s filled with harmful radiation (辐射). But the spacesuits, although they are bulky (臃肿的), can protect astronauts.
A spacesuit is like a small space station. It has everything astronauts need when they carry out a spacewalk. For example, China’s Feitian (飞天) spacesuits have six layers (层). The innermost (最里面的) layer collects astronauts’ urine (尿液). Then there are four layers that help control the temperature and air pressure inside the suit. Spacesuits are filled with air, so they look like they’re puffed up. The sixth layer is made of special fibers (纤维) that protect astronauts from radiation.
Astronauts are connected to the space station with safety ropes. The suit has headphones and speakers for astronauts to communicate. There is also a mirror on the wrist (手腕). Astronauts can check their suits by looking at it.
The first Feitian suit was made in 2008. Zhai Zhigang wore it to carry out China’s first spacewalk for about 19 minutes. The suits Chinese astronauts wear today are the second generation (代) of Feitian. It can support walks as long as eight hours and can be used more often. The first generation could only be used five times within two years, while the second generation can be used 15 times within three years. Each suit costs around 30 million yuan and it takes four months to make just one!
Spacesuits in different countries
The world’s first spacesuit was made in the former Soviet Union (前苏联). Wearing it, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to step into space. The spacesuits that US astronauts wear these days were mainly made in the 1980s and ’90s. They were designed to be used for 15 years, but now they have already been worn for over 30 years. This could be dangerous, so the US started to design new ones in 2009. In 2019, a new suit came out. Astronauts can use it to walk on the moon! It’s expected to be used for space missions in 2024.
