Online rehearsals (排练), dancing all alone, singing and dancing in masks. This is what students from Bemidji High School’s all-girl show choir (合唱团) did this year. Still, the talented voices of the group were not muted (减弱声音) by the pandemic.
The choir La Voce Ballo (LVB) was established in 2004. Every year, it draws in over 250 students to take part. If you walk into the choir room, you’ll surely see an atmosphere (气氛) full of laughter, mask-covered smiles, and girls braiding (编辫子) each other’s hair. “We’re a big sisterhood, like a big family,” said LVB director Emily Paine.
Paine said she feels proud about the resiliency (坚韧) of the choir and the creative ways they found to still enjoy themselves during the pandemic.
For example, they set up a computer in the middle of the choir room to do online rehearsals. Half of the students come in person and the other half join online.
The hardest part of distanced rehearsals was that they couldn’t really practice singing all together. “Once we got back together, it was like, ‘Oh, it’s kind of bad,’ because we were all singing differently,” said choir member Hailie Thompson.
Another major difference is the mask requirement. Paine said performing with masks is “interesting” because “so much of what we do is facial. And so I’m like, ‘use your eyebrows’, ‘use your hands more’,” she said with a laugh.
The group is planning a 20-minute online live show in April. The pandemic will be a theme (主题) running throughout the show. Beginning with Into the Unknown from Disney’s Frozen 2, it will then move into What About Us by Pink and close with Not the End of the World by Katy Perry.

Four hundred million dollars (about 2.6 billion yuan). That’s the value of the goods that flow through the Suez Canal (苏伊士运河) every hour, according to CNBC. The canal is one of the most important parts of the global shipping network that all of us depend on. However, it is also fragile (脆弱的).
The ship Ever Given got stuck in the canal on March 23 due to high winds, according to the ship’s technical manager Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement. It was stuck there for six days until finally being freed on March 29. But during that short time, the ship blocked the canal, leaving at least 422 ships unable to pass. This incident (事故) showed us just how big of a role the canal plays in global trade.
The canal, which first opened in 1869, connects the Mediterranean (地中海) and Red seas. It creates a shorter route between Europe and the Indian and western Pacific oceans. By using the canal, shipping companies can move goods between Europe and Asia without having to navigate (航行) around Africa, reducing sea voyage distances by about 7,000 km, according to Velta, a freight management company. This allows us to move goods faster and cheaper than shipping by air.
All kinds of goods get shipped through the canal every day. About seven percent of the world’s oil is carried through the canal, as well as 30 percent of the world’s total shipping container freight (集装箱货运). Electronics, furniture, clothing, and auto parts (汽车配件) are just a few of the goods that the canal handles. Even basic daily goods like toilet paper and coffee pass through the canal, according to USA Today. If the canal is blocked for a long time, there might be shortages of these goods, which could cause their prices to go up.
1. Which of the following statements describes the Suez Canal correctly
A. It is a 7,000-km-long waterway.
B. It connects the Mediterranean and Red seas.
C. The Egyptians started to build it in 1869.
D. It is the center of our global shipping network.
2. What do we know from Paragraph 2
A. The canal was blocked for six days.
B. The canal closed due to high winds.
C. A ship got stuck in the canal on March 29.
D. Four hundred ships travel through the canal every day.
3. How do shipping companies benefit from using the canal
a. They can move goods with larger ships.
b. They can move goods faster.
c. It shortens the voyage distance between Europe and Asia.
d. It costs them less money to ship goods.
A. abc B. acd C. bcd D. abd
4. This story is written to tell us that the canal is _____.
A. weak B. out of date
C. creative D. important

Every year, 12,000 to 14,000 earthquakes happen around the world, killing tens of thousands of lives. So when it comes to monitoring (监测) earthquakes, every second counts. Recently, a new AI system developed by China is shortening the time it will take to detect (探测) earthquakes.
“This is the first earthquake monitoring AI system in China and the world,” Zhu Huiyu, a researcher at the University of Science and Technology of China, told China News. “It can detect earthquakes in real time.”
After an earthquake happens, most researchers can quickly publish the time, place, magnitude (震级) and depth of the earthquake. However, they often don’t include the focal mechanism parameters (震源机制参数), which can be used to predict the possible distribution (分布) of strong aftershocks (余震). “It takes three to 10 minutes for other countries to publish earthquake focal mechanism parameters, but by this time, the earthquake has fully happened and the damage has been done,” Zhu said. “This new system can provide the focal mechanism parameters within just one second and release the information before the aftershocks reach some areas.”
“If we are able to receive the warning information three seconds earlier after an earthquake occurs, we’ll be able to reduce casualties (伤亡人数) by 14 percent. With 10 seconds earlier, casualties can be reduced by 39 percent,” Zhu said.
This improvement is possible thanks to a deep learning method. The system is trained with millions of earthquake samples (样本). It’s now being tested in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
Answer the questions:
1. According to the first two paragraphs, what can the new earthquake monitoring AI system do
1) _______________________________
2) _______________________________
2. Why are the focal mechanism parameters important
_________________________________
3. How long does it take the new system to provide the focal mechanism parameters
_________________________________
4. What can we infer about the new system from Paragraph 4
_________________________________
5. According to the last paragraph, how was the AI system developed

What is the best soccer club in the world The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has named FC Barcelona the best world club of the decade (2011-2020). The Spanish club also topped the rankings (排名) for this century’s first decade (2001-2010).
The ranking is determined by rating (打分) results from each of a club’s matches. During the past 10 years, Barcelona won 22 trophies, including two Champions Leagues (欧洲冠军杯) and two UEFA Super Cups (欧洲超级杯), earning a score of 2,877 points. Its rival (对手) Real Madrid earned 2,782 points, while FC Bayern München ended up with 2,594 points.
The club obviously won based on its success. But what is it that truly makes a soccer club great
For one thing, the club has its own style, which is also one of the reasons it has been so successful. Instead of relying on physical strength, Barcelona players use more technical skills, especially when it comes to passing. This style works well on the field and is very entertaining (有观赏性的) to watch as well.
This style is used by some of the world’s best players. Many clubs have great players, but “Barcelona is able to bring them together in a way that fans love”, said the sports website Bleacher Report. The club once had superstars like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar, who played together like a “goal-scoring machine”.
Although the club has the spending power to buy big stars, they often prefer to use players from their youth team. These young players are very loyal (忠诚的) to Barcelona. Messi is one player who has risen up through the ranks of the Barcelona academy (青训营).
When Barcelona fans cheer on their team at their home stadium, Camp Nou, they often hold signs saying “Més que un club”, which means “More than a club”. This seems to have been proven true during the past decades.
