Successful people in international business understand the cultures of other countries and learn to change their practices in different cultures. They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions based on misconceptions—mistaken ideas.
One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism, the belief that one’s own culture’s way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures. It’s ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business. To avoid ethnocentrism, it’s necessary to study the different elements(组成部分) of culture: language, values and attitudes, and customs and manners.
Language
A knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways. First, people can communicate directly. Second, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who speaks their language. Third, an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not said directly. Finally, knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better.
Values and attitudes
Values are people’s basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad. An attitude is a way of thinking or acting. Values and attitudes influence international business. For example, many people in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and they buy a lot of it.
Customs and manners
Customs are common social practices. Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite. For example, in the United States, it is the custom to have salad(色拉) before the main course at dinner, not after. It’s not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table. Failure to understand the customs and manners of other countries will bring difficulty selling their products. Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company in France doesn’t sell well because the French don’t usually drink juice with breakfast.
21. A knowledge of the local language allows international business people
A. to be more open with their customers
B. to communicate without outside help
C. to express their thoughts indirectly
D. to have a better idea of their own culture
22. The act of many people buying chocolate of Switzerland shows the role of
A. manners B. values C attitudes D. customs
23. What would be the best title for the text
A. Misconceptions in Business B. Basic Beliefs in Business
C. International Business Culture D. Successful International Business

Hong Kong (CNN)—Less than two kilometers from the mainland Chinese border, in a quiet shady woods by a local village, sits a rare 200-year-old wild incense(檀香) tree. “No one in this village even knows that this is an incense tree—except me,” says the 54-year old Chan. “I love these trees because I grew up with them.” He wants to ensure his two young sons do as well.
Officially known as Aquilaria sinensis (土沉香), “agar-wood” was once a common commodity, but is now rare because of illegal logging. Chan has been trying to change that. Over the past four years, he has planted 10,000 new trees on Hong Kong’s only incense plantation, part of a family business passed on to him from his father and grandfather. All told, the plantation has some 300,000 incense trees.
While incense tree conservation is one of Chan’s motivations, a lucrative livelihood is another. Chan explains he can sell a young tree for as much as $600. The 10,000 trees he planted could mean millions if he were to sell. But if left to mature at least 10 years, the trees can be an even bigger moneymaker once harvested—supplying incense powder, fragrant wood used in herbal teas as well as traditional Chinese medicines.
The wood itself can command a large sum. Chan says one arms-length carving can command $125,000. He adds his buyers usually come from Taiwan and mainland China after they learn of his business through word of mouth or through his website. But because of its high price and limited supply, the incense tree has also become a victim of its own value.
“Hong” means fragrant in the local Cantonese language. “Kong” means harbor. In the meantime, Chan hopes people will not forget the city’s heritage as he nurtures the city’s last incense plantation to save the “Hong” of Hong Kong. “I hope my incense trees can grow bigger and be everywhere. Even though Hong Kong is urbanizing I think more trees can and should be planted.”
24. According to the passage, old Chan was .
A. one of few villagers who know incense tree in his village
B. the only one who grew up with a wild incense tree
C. one of the villagers who plant wild incense trees
D. the only one who knows incense tree in his village
25. Why is agar-wood one of the most valuable commodity
A. Because incense trees are very hard to plant.
B. Because most incense trees are logging illegally.
C. Because Hong Kong has only one incense plantation.
D. Because Aquilaria sinensis is very hard to produce.
26. The underlined word “lucrative” in the third paragraph means .
A. Profitable B. Available C. Accessible D. Possible
27. How does the buyer learn Chan’s business
A. Through word of mouth or by telephone.
B. Through first-hand investigation or through the Internet.
C. Through word of mouth or through the Internet.
D. Through his website or by visiting his plantation.

Animals do amazing things. Birds migrate immense distances. Whales communicate across vast oceans. Honeybees remember familiar flowers. Crows can turn sticks into tools. Elephants can imitate sounds. Monkeys do simple math. Can animals also warn us if a natural disaster is about to strike A few days before the Asian tsunami(海啸) several months ago, a person watched thousands of ants rush away from the beach into the forest. According to other accounts, elephants screamed and ran to higher ground as many as 10 days before disaster struck. Dogs refused to go outside.
Despite decades of research, scientists don’t know how to predict earthquakes and tsunamis. Maybe animals can do better. Some people say that animals have a special kind of power for sensing the future. They call it a “sixth sense”. The scientific evidence for an animal sixth sense, however, is slim, says John Caprio, a neurobiologist(神经生物学家) at Louisiana State University. If reports about animals escaping danger are actually true, Caprio says, the animals must be responding to real sensations, rather than using some mysterious type of otherworldly perception.
When it comes to sensing earthquakes and tsunamis, feeling the vibrations(震动) they create in the earth is probably key, says Joel Greenspan. “Animals are always in direct contact with the ground,” Greenspan says. “We don’t do that anymore. We have shoes and clothes. We pay attention to other people, sights, and sounds.” That way, if an animal is standing or lying around, it can sense the footsteps of predators(食肉动物) coming its way. Perhaps the animals in Asia mistook the earthquake and tsunami for a monster coming to eat them. In response, they ran in the opposite direction and ended up saving themselves.
Even though scientists are far from knowing everything about why animals behave the way they do, most scientists are sure there must be rational explanations. Further research, however, might help us understand what it feels like to be a fish, a cat, an elephant, or a mouse.
28. This article is mainly about .
A. amazing animals B. amazing world
C. sixth sense D. sense of danger
29. Where may this article appear
A. Science news B. Entertainment

A. They can feel the vibration in the earth.
B. They mistook tsunami for a monster’s coming.
C. They were using mysterious type of perception.
D. They have sixth sense which humans don’t have.
31. The underlined word “slim” in the second paragraph means .
A. clear B. sufficient C. strange D. little

Depression is a mood disorder accompanied by emotional and physical symptoms that interfere with your daily life. Everyone experiences depression differently. Some people experience significant increases in their depression symptoms at night. Nighttime depression can also create or worsen insomnia, by keeping you awake longer or making it more difficult to fall asleep.
There are a number of causes that can contribute to increased depression at night. One commonly suggested reason for the increase is the lack of distractions (干扰). During the day, it’s a little easier for some people—especially those with mild or moderate depression—to keep themselves busy. Work, school, or social activities act as a distraction during the day. But at night, when you settle down to sleep, there’s nothing but you and your thoughts.
Researchers have looked into other things that could be increasing our nighttime depression symptoms. According to 2013 research on animals, bright lights (especially blue and white) at night can not only keep us awake, but may also increase symptoms of depression. In the study, even having a TV on in a dark room increased the animal’s cortisol levels and created changes in their hippocampus (海马体), both of which can increase depressive symptoms.
It’s also thought that if your circadian rhythm (生理节律) is disrupted, your depression may be triggered or your symptoms could increase in severity. One 2009 study found that increased artificial light can significantly disrupt our circadian rhythm, causing or increasing mood disorders like depression.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can cope with depression that occurs or increases in severity at night. For depression symptoms, regardless of the time of day they show up, you should maintain the treatment plan prescribed by your doctor.
32. What causes worsened depression at night
A. Tiredness from hard work. B. The blank and free brain.
C. Blue and red lights. D. The complete darkness.
33. What may be helpful to reduce nighttime depression symptoms
A. Sleeping in natural light. B. Sleeping with the TV on.
C. Using only red lights. D. Doing special research.
34. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Depression can be controlled in some way. B. One can completely get rid of depression.
C. Only doctors have cures for depression. D. Depression in the day can be ignored.
35. What can be the best title of the passage
A. Sleeping difficulty B. Emotional health
C. Depression at night D. Mood controlling

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia (百科全书), is the largest encyclopedia ever. An encyclopedia is a collection of informative articles about various things. Encyclopedias used to be printed as books. 36
“Wiki” is an Internet term that means “a website that can be edited by the public”. It comes from “wikiwiki”, a Hawaiian word for “quick”. Two Americans, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, created Wikipedia in 2001. 37 It has about 6 million articles in 300 languages and is visited by billions of people each day, who want to find information about anything — science, math, languages, art, culture and company histories. There are articles on sports stars, too, and even long-forgotten soap operas from the 1970s.
38 Except for a small number of pages, anyone can edit articles and registered users can create their own articles. Editing is unpaid, although Wikipedia does employ a small staff. Wikipedia is freely available to anyone with an Internet connection. Its founders hoped that the model would make use of humanity’s collective knowledge.
39 Many Wikipedia pages contain errors, although the organization has a content review system that works to fix this problem. Several studies have concluded that Wikipedia is as accurate as most print encyclopedias. Indeed, a 2005 report in the journal Nature found it to be only slightly less reliable than Encyclopedia Britannica.
Today Wikipedia faces many challenges. It does not rely on advertising. 40 Perhaps more importantly, the number of its volunteer editors is shrinking.
Despite these difficulties, Jimmy Wales says he will still stick to his dream. He has big plans for the future. He wants Wikipedia available in all of the world’s languages.
A. Most of its editors are volunteers.
B. Now, they are mostly found online.
C. Wikipedia employs an open editing model.
D. Instead, all of its funds come from donations.
E. It allows users to get information within seconds.
F. It is now the fifth-most visited website on the Internet.
G. However, some people doubt the accuracy of Wikipedia's content.
