In July of last year, I moved to college. Going away to college can be exciting
because it gives you an opportunity to start your life over. I’ve had problems with
body image(the opinion you have about how attractive your body is) and
self-confidence for as long as I can remember, but going to college could change that.
No one knew me there so they also didn’t know how shy I was or how unathletic I
was.
So on the 1st of June, I asked myself, “What can I do to feel more confident ”
Well, I could start by exercising and losing weight. I usually gave up on opportunities
to play in high school because I thought I wasn’t as good as others and I’d only make
a fool out of myself.
On the first day, I found a 30-minute workout video online; however, I gave up
halfway through. I was so discouraged that I didn’t even want to work out the next

day. So, I decided to take a walk because I thought it was an easier alternative to
working out.
I went out with my earphones plugged(塞) in my ears and walked for around 30
minutes. However, I wasn’t feeling discouraged anymore. I walked for 45 minutes
every day for a week. The next week, I wanted to up my game. So I started walking
for 60 minutes every day and it felt good for a couple of days before the monotony
got to me —the same songs, the same route, and the same people every day. So I
decided to take different routes. I started taking my bother with me every once in a
while. But what helped me the most was calling a friend while I was walking. I didn’t
even feel tired after I was done. Another benefit was that I started to strengthen my
relationship with friends I had hardly talked to in months. I felt more confident in my
body. I felt happy and realized I was more energetic, joyful, and curious. It made me a
more well-rounded and developed person in multiple(许多的 ) fields and I had lost
around three kilograms.

There are a number of animals that glow(发光 )in some way. But plants don’t
glow. Now, scientists are working to change that.
Fireflies and other bioluminescent(生物性发光的 )creatures light up thanks to
luciferins(荧光素)inside their bodies. Luciferins cause a chemical reaction that gives
off light. Plants don’t naturally have luciferins, so there are no naturally
bioluminescent plants. But that hasn’t stopped scientists from trying to create them.
第 5 页 共 12 页
In the past, scientists have also created glowing plants by adding Luciferins to
plants. But it’s a tricky operation and only works as long as the chemicals last. Now,
researchers at a Russian company called Planta have come up with a new method of
creating glowing plants which lasts as long as the plant is alive. Though mushrooms
(蘑菇)and plants grow very differently, the scientists focused on an acid(酸)that is
found in both plants and mushrooms. By adding certain parts of the DNA from
glowing mushrooms to ordinary plants, the scientists were able to create plants that
could make their own Luciferins using this acid. The scientists reported that the
greenish light was about 10 times brighter than in earlier glowing plants. The glow
was strong enough to be easily recorded with an ordinary camera, but it didn’t affect
the health of the plants.
Younger parts of the plants glowed more strongly than older parts. The flowers
glowed specially brightly. The researchers sometimes noticed the light moving in the
plants. They think this may show activity in plants that normally can’t be seen. The
glowing also helps show how plants may be affected by things around them. For
example, the plants glowed much more strongly when a ripe(熟的 )banana skin was
nearby.
But the researchers don’t think the plants will just be used for science. They
think many people may want glowing plants for their beauty. The scientist have
already shown that several common flowers can be made to glow. Planta is working
with a company called Light Bio to develop glowing plants to sell.
28. What is the advantage of Planta’s glowing plants
A. They can light up without luciferins.
B. They are healthier and brighter than other plants.
C. They grow faster than earlier glowing plants.
D. They can glow for a long time.
29. Why is the banana skin mentioned in the text
A. To introduce a glowing banana.
B. To prove light moves in the plants.
C. To show some value of glowing plants.
D. To explain how to make plants glow strongly.
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Glowing plants will be used in different ways.
B. Planta is making an effort to create easy-to –grow flowers.
C. Light Bio has made a large amount of money from glowing plants.
D. Scientists are uncertain about creating new kinds of flowers.

31. What would be the best title for the text
A. Benefits of glowing flowers

Couchsurfing, which allows you to explore the world at a very low cost, is
becoming more popular. Couchsurfers can stay on a host’s sofa or in their spare room
for free, and the host will often show them round the city. Various websites exist
which connect surfers and hosts, and all you need to do is sign up.
Try and fill in as much information as possible in your profile(简介) in order to
give a whole picture of you. However, the key things that any host or surfer should
focus on are references or comments(介绍信或评价). Many hosts will not host you if
you have not go any references or if you have got some bad ones, according to
Michele Legge, an experienced host and surfer from Perth, Australia.
So how can a green hand increase their chances of finding a host Michele has
the answer: “My advice to any student thinking of travelling is to get started before
you leave home: join couchsurfers, invite travellers for coffee, show them round your
local area, take them on a night out, go to local meetups and host if you can. This way
you start building networks and get references which always look good.”
Most users of the couchsurfing sites insists the main draw is not the free bed, but
the “couchsurfing spirit” and a great interest in different cultures. So remember people
who host strangers for free like to be included by another culture. And who were the
most unwelcome guests Michele has hosted Two German girls who spoke perfectly
good English, but who would only speak to each other in German.
Michele advises couchsurfers to “take what your host has to offer without
judgement”.This is something I found useful during my couchsurfing experience
when staying in Munich. At first the realisation that Stefan got all his food from bins
was extremely unpleasant, but I soon came round to the eco-friendly movement of
dumpster diving!Similarly, the lack of brakes(车闸) on the bicycle I was lent created a
problem at first, but I soon got used to it.
32. Which often decides whether you will be hosted
A. Your travelling experiences.
B. The references in your profile.
C. Your understanding of couchsurfing.
D. The personal information in your profile.

33. What are new surfers advised to do
A. Spend more time with couchsurfers.
B. Use different couchsurfing websites.
C. Learn more about couchsurfing online.
D. Read the references of other couchsurfers.
34. What happened to Michele when she host the two German girls
A. She was touched by them.
B. She became part of their life.
C. She was left out of their culture.
D. She had a happy conversation with them.
35. What may be the author’s advice for couchsurfers
A.Tell the truth. B. Learn to accept.
C. Act according to changes. D. Think before doing anything.
