If knowledge is power, then books are fuel and libraries are power stations! Here are four amazing libraries that can get you positively charged.
New York Public Library—New York
Opened in 1911, New York Public Library was the largest marble building in the world. Over the years the library has a collection of 53 million items, including rare first edition books, 300 million pages of historical newspapers and around 40 ,000 restaurant menus dating back to 1850!
Chetham's Library— Manchester
Founded in 1653, Chetham's Library is a free public library with the longest history in the UK. The building itself is even older —built in 1421, it's one of the most well—protected medieval buildings in England!
With 100 ,000 + books lining the shelves, the special atmosphere of the library attracts students and scholars alike to attend guided tours offered throughout the year.
The Library of Congress Washington, D. C.
Located on Capitol Hill, the Library of Congress is considered the national library of the US and the second largest library in the world. The library has around 168 million items, adding 10 ,000 to this number every day.
Need to catch up on the news The Library of Congress, which was founded in 1800, holds the world’s largest newspaper collection, with some dating back as far as 1659!
The British Library—London
The British Library was founded in 1973. With around 170 million items spread across 750 km of shelving, it's the largest library in the world. And this number is continually growing and 8 km of shelving has to be added every year! This is partly because the British Library must receive a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland, by law.
1. Where can you visit the oldest library
A. In New York. B. In London.
C. In Manchester. D. In Washington, D. C.
2. What makes the Library of Congress special
A. Its large area.
B. Its various functions.
C. Its building materials.
D. Its newspaper collection.
3. Which of the following helps enlarge the collection of the British Library
A. The legal rule. B. The public's help.
C. The printing skills. D. The librarians' efforts.

Moving to a foreign country is an amazing, life-changing experience. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, make yourself completely involved in a different culture and possibly learn another language. However, before embarking on such an adventure, there are some practical decisions that need to be made. One such decision is choosing where to live.
For me, choosing to live with a French family was the best choice I made, and here is why.
Firstly, a family can show you around the city or town and help you settle in, stopping you from feeling lonely. When you’re in a new environment with people you don’t know and who are speaking a language you’re still not fluent in, you might feel lost, tired and homesick—I know I did. However, my host family were wonderful and welcoming; they showed me which buses to take to get to work and cooked dinner for me so we could eat together, and took me with them on trips to the beach, the theatre and even a bullfight. These were great opportunities to experience French culture and build relationships, which in turn helped me feel more comfortable and welcome.
Moreover, living with French people has been brilliant for helping me improve my language skills. Being constantly exposed to authentic French conversation has allowed me to learn new phrases, widen my vocabulary and even improve my accent. My host family are happy to answer my questions and correct me when I say things wrong, which makes me a better and more confident French speaker.
Finally, the experience of living abroad is one that you will remember forever, and perhaps the friendships—like the memories—will also last. Your host family might become your friends for life. You might return for their birthdays, weddings, holidays, and much more. I hope to remain in contact with my host family long after I leave France because when I was away from my friends and loved ones, they welcomed me and made me part of their family.
4. What does the underlined phrase “embarking on” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. Remarking on. B. Setting about.
C. Depending on. D. Putting forward.
5. Where did the writer choose to live when moving to a foreign country
A. In a dormitory. B. In his own apartment.
C In a host family. D. In his friend’s house.
6. What is the advantage of living with French people
A. Improving his French skills.
B. Feeling homesick and lonely.
C. Making friends from different countries.
D. Introducing English culture to the French.
7. How does the writer develop the passage
A. By making comparisons. B. By following the order of time.
C. By following the order of importance. D. By listing detailed reasons.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. D

Faced with a decreasing population and dropping workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robots for help. Over the years, the androids have been employed to perform a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care and companionship for the elderly. The latest addition to the Japanese “workforce” may be Model-T. Designed by Telexistence Inc., this seven-foot-tall robot is currently undergoing trials restocking (补充货源) sandwiches, drinks, and ready meals on shelves at select locations of local convenience store chains Lawson and FamilyMart.
Telexistence has received funding from technology investment company Softbank Group and cell phone service operator KDDI in Japan, with overseas investors including European passenger aircraft maker Airbus Ventures. It named its robot Model-T, a nod to the Ford Motor car that began the age of mass motoring a century ago.
Compared with the warehouse robots being used by companies like Walmart and Amazon, which are only able to accomplish single, repeated tasks, Model-T has a much wider range of movement and can be used to restock objects of various sizes, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores.
“It is able to grasp or pick and place objects of several different shapes and sizes into different locations,” Matt Komatsu, head of business development and operations at Telexistence Inc., told CNN Business. However, Model-T is not self-controlled. Instead, it is operated by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in their hands and guide it to the right shelf. Since the video connection between the robot and the human operator has a mere 50 milliseconds delay, the navigation (导航) process is smooth. Telexistence says the VR-controlled androids are easier to develop and repair. They are also ten times cheaper than self-controlled robots, which require complex programming
Though Model-T appears to have passed the trials, it is not quite ready to enter the labor force. Besides being a lot slower than human labour, it is also only able to lift packaged items, and cannot grasp loose items such as fruits and vegetables. Telexistence hopes to introduce a faster Model-T within the next two years.
8. What is the main reason for the invention of Model-T
A. The shortage of labour force.
B. The demands of senior citizens.
C. The development of technology.
D. The appeal of convenience stores.
9. What’s the hidden message behind the name Model-T
A. It is an updated version of Ford Motor.
B. It may create a new age like Ford Motor.
C. Its design is as fashionable as Ford Motor.
D. Its connection with Ford Motor is inseparable.
10. What can we learn about Model-T according to Paragraph 4
A. It doesn’t need repairs.
B. It performs tasks automatically.
C. It requires complex programming.
D. It depends largely on human’s operation.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly discuss about Model-T
A. Its applications. B. Its advantages.
C. Its limitations. D. Its functions.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Besides being a lot slower than human labour, it is also only able to lift packaged items, and cannot grasp loose items such as fruits and vegetables. Telexistence hopes to introduce a faster Model-T within the next two years.(除了速度比人力慢很多之外,它还只能举起包装好的物品,不能抓取松散的物品,比如水果和蔬菜。Telexistence希望在未来两年内推出一款速度更快的Model-T。)”可知,这一段主要讲述了Model-T还存在的缺陷。故选C。
D
After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges(驱策力)count for much more than ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, "Why Why Why "
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them.
"The great man," said Mencius(孟子), "is he who does not lose his child's heart. " Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn't arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. How she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven't any special ability Most people don't; there are only a few geniuses. You haven't any time That's good, because it's always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom's Cabin while cooking. You're too old Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you'll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
12. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to ________.
A. propose a definition B. make a comparison
C. reach a conclusion D. present an argument
13. What does the example of Galileo tell us
A. Trial and error leads to the finding of truth.
B. Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious.
C. Creativity results from challenging authority.
D. Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.
14. What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent
A. Observe the unknown around you.
B. Develop a questioning mind.
C. Lead a life of adventure.
D. Follow the fashion.
15. What could be the best title of the passage
A. Curious Minds Never Feel Contented
B. Reflections on Human Nature
C. The Keys to Achievement
D. Never Too Late to Learn
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. C

【分析】本文是一篇议论文。文章论述了获得成就的两个关键因素——好奇心和不满足。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.(经过多年对人性的观察,我认为有两个品质决定了成就非凡的人和平庸的人的区别好奇心和不满足。据我所知,任何一个杰出的人都缺乏这两点。我从来没见过一个普通人同时拥有这两种能力。他们俩是天生一对) ”可知,作者经过多年对人性的观察,认为成就非凡的人和平庸的人的区别在于好奇心和不满足,而且两者是相辅相成的。因此,作者写第一段的目的是提出一个论点。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, ‘Why Why Why ’(像伽利略一样,历史上所有的伟人都感到好奇,并不满地问:“为什么?为什么?为什么?”) ”可推断,伽利略的例子告诉我们,伟大来自于持久的探索欲望。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, ‘Why Why Why ’(像伽利略一样,历史上所有的伟人都感到好奇,并不满地问:“为什么?为什么?为什么?”) ”;以及第四段中的“‘The great man,’ said Mencius (孟子), ‘is he who does not lose his child's heart.’ Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd.(孟子认为“不失去孩子的心,就是伟大的人。”然而,我们大多数人确实失去了它。我们不再问问题。我们不再挑战习俗。我们只是随大流) ”可知,你可以通过培养了一个善于提问的头脑,来重新获得好奇心和不满足。故选B。
【15题详解】

Moving to a foreign country is an amazing life-changing experience.

C. In a host family.

Compared with the warehouse robots being used by companies like Walmart and Amazon which are only able to accomplish single, repeated tasks, Model-T has a much wider range of movement and can be used to restock objects of various sizes, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores.
