A
There is one thing for sure: It's never too hard to throw garbage in Indonesia(印度尼西亚). What Indonesians commonly do is putting their trashes in their personal garbage area which is usually located at the front of their house. Put it there, and the garbage collectors with their big garbage truck will pick the trashes up. The waste collection bill in Indonesia is expected to be paid personally to the garbage collection agent—no tax added. It's simply a cost for garbage workers' fee and garbage truck transportation fee. Bring their waste to their nearest dumping site and they don't need to pay for anything.
Germany is the country with the world's number one recycling system. The country has quite a detailed way of__sorting__their waste—down to the colour of the glass waste you wish to throw away, the type of paper that can be put inside the paper waste bin, a separate bin for metals, a different bin for plastic, another different bin for broken glass.
South Koreans didn't use to really care about how to sort their waste, but in the year 1995, their government took a different path from most of the other countries: They establish a systematic and strict waste management standard to ensure the stability(稳定) of their future economy(经济). Their government knows for sure that a good waste management system brings lots of good things—money saving, better environment, and more opportunities to grow and expand(扩大). So South Korea has a pretty strict rule and many exceptions about what the items are considered as.
Another thing to keep in mind about South Korea's waste management system is that each district in South Korea has its own official garbage bag. You will have to use the one that is exclusive(专有的) to the place you live in. The garbage bags could be bought at the local supermarket.
( )1.Which fee do the Indonesians need to pay for their waste
A.Garbage workers' fee and garbage truck transportation fee.
B.Garbage workers' fee.
C.Garbage truck transportation fee.
D.No any fee for waste.
( )2.The underlined word “sorting” probably means “________” in Chinese.

C.South Korea. D.North Korea.
( )4.Which of the following ways of dealing with rubbish may be the way of South Korea
A.People put their trash in their personal garbage area near their houses.
B.People don't type their waste before throwing it.
C.People can bring their waste to their nearest dumping site in order to save money.
D.People have their own special garbage bag in each area.
( )5.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true
A.Indonesians put their trash in their personal garbage area.
B.You need to separate your waste before you throw it into bins in Germany.

If you are in Shanghai and want to throw away a cup of milky tea, be careful. You need to follow these steps: First, pour out any leftover(残留物) into a wet waste bin. Second, put the paper wrapper into a recyclable waste bin. Third, throw the single use cup and straw(吸管) into a dry waste bin.
Sound complex(复杂的) You'll have to get used to it. From July 1, 2019 on, people in Shanghai are required(要求) to sort(将……分类) their garbage according to strict rules. Many other cities in China are planning to create similar garbage sorting rules.
Why should we sort our garbage The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year, according to China Economic Net. Most of this waste is buried(填埋) in landfills(垃圾填埋场), which may pollute water and soil. Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.
In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials, while wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and fertiliser(肥料). But in order to recycle efficiently(有效率地), we need to sort our garbage.
Can't garbage processing companies do the sorting job for us They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the troublesome task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milky tea

Mark Twain once said that everyone talks about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it. This was true in his day. But it may not be the case in today’s world. In fact, humans have found many different ways to control the weather.
Cloud seeding(云催化) is a kind of technology that can control rain. It is done by spreading chemicals like dry ice or silver iodide(碘化银) inside of clouds, either by rocket or airplane. This changes the amount of water inside the clouds, which helps to control the amount of rain, the time when it rains and even where it rains.
This technology has helped to solve drought. It has also played a key role during important events. For example, China used cloud seeding in Beijing just before the 2008 Olympic Games in order to stop rain from falling during the event.
However, scientists are still debating how to use this technology. On the one hand, it is believed that it might have side effects. For example, silver iodide may be bad for the environment. On the other hand, no two clouds are the same, so every new experiment introduces new conditions.
Using lasers to change the weather has been tested in a lab, and it has been fairly successful on a small scale. Scientists are still trying to figure out how to use it in the real world, but it could be a new way to stop climate change.
In addition to controlling rain, scientists have also tried to find ways to weaken storms and hurricanes(飓风). Scientists at the US National Hurricane Centre Headquarters think it might be possible to control hurricanes by using lasers. Others believe that burning petroleum in a hurricane’s path could slow the storms down.
( )1.Cloud seeding works by spreading inside of clouds.
A.storms B.drought
C.chemicals D.water
( )2.From Paragraph 2, we learn that cloud seeding .
A.helps produce rain B.uses rockets or spacecraft to work
C.releases chemicals into the air D.can control its side effects well
( )3.The underlined phrase “side effects” means “ ” in Chinese.
A.好作用 B.副作用 C.没作用 D.少作用
( )4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage
A.Humans today can change the weather.
B.New technology can help to solve drought.
C.China has once used cloud seeding in Beijing.
D.Scientists are able to control rain and hurricanes by using lasers.
( )5.What can we learn from the passage
A.Mark Twain liked to talk about the weather.
B.Cloud seeding may not be environmentally friendly.
C.All scientists have welcomed cloud seeding technology.
D.Cloud seeding can be used to control storms.

The world uses about a thousand million tons of water a day. Water is a human right and everyone should have their share. Yet more than 700 million people around the world have trouble getting clean, safe water.
Treating wastewater is a good way to provide fresh water for us. And it also helps the environment by keeping waste out of rivers and oceans. 80% of wastewater around the world is not treated at all, and it is running into oceans. But now we have got the technology to treat and reuse the wastewater.
Though 75% of our planet is covered with water, only about 2% is fresh water—that comes from rivers, lakes, ice and snow. The rest, 98% of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is too salty to drink. Then desalination businesses come in. More than 19,000 factories have been built around the world, mostly in coastal countries. They process(加工) more than 92 million tons of water every day. But the technology they use requires a lot of energy.
Scientists are working to create a less costly technology. They want to produce 20 times more clean water and make sure everyone has enough. But for now, the world still faces each day without having enough water for everyone.
( )1.Treating wastewater helps the environment by .
A.storing waste in ice and snow
B.letting waste run into oceans
C.keeping waste out of rivers and oceans
D.sending waste to coastal countries
( )2.What does the underlined word “desalination” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.远洋运输 B.潮汐发电 C.食盐销售 D.海水淡化
( )3.At present, the technology to process water .
A.needs much energy B.saves much money
C.satisfies everyone D.causes pollution
( )4.What can we infer(推断出) from the last paragraph
A.Water should be a human right.
B.The water problem is still serious.
C.75% of our planet is covered with fresh water.
D.Everyone has enough clean water.

The end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 have been a hard time. Diseases, earthquakes and forest fires have begun a new year like never before. While those of us in China have been asked to stay at home for a quiet winter, many Australians have been forced to leave theirs during a “hot and fiery” summer.
I’ve spent at least ten summers in Sydney, Australia. Unlike summers in Shanghai, the weather there is quick to change. A really hot day is usually followed by a few cool days and some rain. That’s why the average summer temperature is only 26℃. This year, the average temperature was about 1.5℃ higher.
“1.5℃”—that’s a number we have seen before. In 2018, the United Nations reported that we needed to keep temperature increase below 1.5℃. At the time, many of us didn’t really understand what it meant. “It’s just a number,” we thought. Well, now we know.
The amount of fire and smoke in Australia this year has never been seen before. Over a billion wild animals have been killed. Anybody you talk to would say that these are the worst bushfires(森林火灾) they have ever seen. I was lucky and made it back to Sydney one day before the fires forced the roads to close. Thousands of others were trapped and had to be rescued by emergency services.
Our goal for the past few years has been to limit global(全球的) warming to 1.5℃. We now know what could happen if we didn’t succeed.
( )1.The passage mainly tells us .
A.people in Australia had to leave their homes
B.the weather in Sydney is different from that in Shanghai
C.the bushfires in Australia were the worst people had ever seen
D.the temperature increase is dangerous to the earth
( )2.According to the writer, .
A.people in Australia suffered a lot before the end of 2019
B.lots of wild animals in Australia died in the fire
C.all Chinese were asked to stay at home for a quiet winter
D.the weather in Shanghai changes quickly in summers
( )3.In Paragraph 4, the underlined word “others” refers to .
A.people B.roads C.forest fires D.wild animals
( )4.The writer thought he was lucky because he .
A.had spent at least ten summers in Sydney
B.understood the meaning of “It’s just a number”
C.had been back to Sydney before the roads were closed
D.was rescued by emergency services with others
( )5.The best title of the passage should be .
A.Only 1.5℃ B.Hard 2020 C.World Events D.Global Warming

There are some easy things you can do to protect the environment and the earth. Choose ideas from the list or come up with a few of your own.
Plant flowers, grass or trees.
Whenever you visit a park or a beach, take away what you bring there-keep rubbish in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin.
Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. You can save some water by not letting it run. Also, use a glass cup instead of a paper cup, because this saves paper.
Turn off the lights, TV sets when you leave the room. This saves a lot of electricity.
Keep the doors and windows closed in winter to keep warm instead of using air conditions.
Give your old clothes to poor children you know and give your old books and magazines to library instead of throwing them away.
Use both sides of paper.
Stop pouring dirty water into the river or lakes nearby.
Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth.
You don’t have to wait until Earth Day to do these things. Make every day Earth Day.
If everyone makes a contribution to protecting the environment, the world will become much more beautiful.
( )1. From the above, we know that this is_____.
A. a sigh B. a proposal(倡议书) C. an advertisement D. a notice
( )2. The writer tells us ____.
A. to throw rubbish into a dustbin
B. to pour dirty water into the river
C. to save water by letting it run while we are brushing our teeth

Dear friends,
As we know, Hohhot is working hard to win the title of China’s National Civilised City.
It’s well known that Hohhot is striving for one of the ten civilised cities in China, and now it is a good opportunity for us to make our own contribution.
Firstly, more changes in our daily lives, such as sorting out the rubbish and travelling in a greener way, can be made to protect the city environment. What’s more, to make Hohhot a loving city, we are also supposed to help those in need by doing some voluntary work or raising donations. Last but not least, get along with others in an honest and friendly way. We’d better avoid talking about others’ privacy because we should show our respect.
I strongly believe that we will make Hohhot a more civilised and beautiful city with our joint efforts.
All in all, Hohhot is our home. It’s time to take action.

Now, public bikes are provided for people in many cities in China.
I think it’s a good idea. First, it is extremely convenient to go around the city by bike and you can rent and return it whenever you want. What’s more, as we all know, there is heavy traffic when you go to school or work. If you choose to ride a bike, you will find the street isn’t as crowded as usual and you can save much time. The most important thing is that riding bikes contributes to protecting the environment because it hardly causes pollution.
I hope more and more people can ride bikes and live a low-carbon life.

How to Save
Our government is aiming to build an“economized society”. I think it is every citizen’s duty to work hard to achieve this goal. As students, we can still do something to help.
First, don’t waste things. We’d better go to school on foot or ride a bike instead of taking a car. Turn off the lights as soon as we leave the classroom. Remember to turn off the tap at once after washing our hands. When we go out to eat in a restaurant, ask for smaller dishes and take leftovers home. Before we buy something new, think whether it is necessary.
Next, use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. Don’t use a paper cup or a paper bag. It’s better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.
Finally, collect what can be recycled in your classroom or in your neighborhood and sell them. We should also buy things made from recycled materials.
In a word, I think, one thing we should keep in mind is that no matter what a small effort we make, it does make a difference.
