How do young people learn best This is something I think about a lot when teaching foreign languages to young people. I often find that traditional teaching methods are neither always effective nor interesting for young brains to learn a foreign language.
After moving to southern Italy I was lucky to have the chance to run a private course teaching English to under 7-year-olds. I was aware that children liked to sing and enjoyed games so I wanted to use these tools to help my students develop English conversation skills. I found some fun and easy songs online, which they loved. I also found the English versions of some nursery rhymes they recognized. All of them were very interesting and helpful but students could still not have a basic conversation in English.
I knew I wanted these guys to be fully immersed in the language I was teaching and I also wanted them to speak it. I was keen to give 90% of my lessons in English but I knew it'd be difficult to get them to speak in a foreign language they had little or zero exposure to outside our lessons, so I had to come up with a simple yet effective plan.
One day I decided to prepare a simple dialogue in English, so that I could get them to sing and chant(有节奏地反复地唱) it, rather than simply getting students to repeat the phrases. I discovered that chanting some conversational sentences was the way to get students to speak in English — it worked!
So when teaching English to young people now, I encourage them to make up their own songs and chants to help them remember expressions or complex sentences.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is America’s fifth largest city. Once a major American colonial city, it is the home of America’s first library, its first hospital, and its first zoo. Now it is also the first US city to be named a World Heritage City. On November 6, 2015, Philadelphia joined more than 260 other cities that have been recognized for their influence on the world. These cities include Paris, France, Florence, Italy, and Cairo, Egypt.
“Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of Philadelphia,” remarked Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter when the announcement was made. “As a World Heritage City, Philadelphia is being officially recognized on the global stage for its wealth of contributions to the world.
To be named a World Heritage City, a city must be home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO World Heritage sites are selected for their universal value and significance. For Philadelphia, the site is Independence Hall.
Independence Hall is where two of the most important documents in US history—the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution—were adopted. The Declaration of Independence, approved on July 4, 1776, united the 13 former British colonies and declared them independent from British rule. The US Constitution, signed in 1787, established the American democratic system of government. A democracy is a system of government in which the people elect their leaders. The Constitution later spelled out the basic freedoms American citizens have.
Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger says the city’s selection as a World Heritage City also reflects its educational, cultural, and economic achievements. The city is home to dozens of colleges and universities, and many museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “Philadelphia has rightfully earned its place as one of the greatest cities in the world.” Greenberger says.

A. is known for many America’s firsts B. has been famous as a World Heritage City

29. In Paragraph 2, Michael Nutter is talking about _________.
A. the World Heritage City B. the significance of the city’s selection
C. the history of Philadelphia D. the contributions of the city
30. What opinion does Alan Greenberger hold
A. It’s easy for the city to win the honor
B. The honor will bring the city a better future
C. It won’t be long before the city takes off
D. The city really deserves the honor
31. What could be the best title for the text
A. Philadelphia Makes a Difference B. Philadelphia Develops a Lot
C. Philadelphia Makes History D. Philadelphia Wins Global Respect
D
Cutting global warming pollution would not only make the planet healthier, it would make people healthier too, new research suggests.
Cutting carbon dioxide emissions could save millions of lives, mostly by reducing preventable deaths from heart and lung diseases, according to studies released Wednesday and published in a special issue of The Lancet British medical journal.
“Relying on fossil fuels leads to unhealthy lifestyles, increasing our chances for getting sick and in some cases takes years from our lives,” US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a telecast (电视广播) briefing from her home state of Kansas. “As greenhouse gas emissions go down, so do deaths from cardiovascular (心血管的) and respiratory diseases (呼吸疾病). This is not a small effect.”
Instead of looking at the health ills caused by future global warming, as past studies have done, this research looks at the immediate benefits of doing something about the problem, said Linda Birnbaum, director of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
Some possible benefits seemed highly speculative (投机的,推测的), the researchers conceded (承认,给予), based on people driving less and walking and cycling more. Other proposals studied were more concrete and achievable, such as reducing cook stoves that burn dung (粪便), charcoal and other polluting fuels in the developing world.
And cutting carbon dioxide emissions also makes the air cleaner, reducing lung damage for millions of people, doctors said.
“Here are ways you can attack major health problems at the same time as dealing with climate change," said lead author Dr. Paul Wilkinson, an environmental epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Wilkinson said the individual studies came up with numbers of premature deaths prevented or extra years of life added for certain places.
For example, switching to low-polluting cars in London and Delhi, India, would save 160 lost years of life in London and nearly 1,700 in Delhi for every million residents, one study found. But if people also drove less and walked or biked more, those extra saved years would soar (高耸,高涨) to more than 7,300 years in London and 12,500 years in Delhi because of less heart disease.
32. What does the passage mainly about
A. How can people live longer
B. Cutting carbon dioxide emissions saves life
C. Global warming threatens people’s lives
D. People should stop relying on fossil fuels
33. The new research differs from past studies in that ________.
A. it focuses on the immediate benefits of cutting carbon dioxide emissions
B. it studies the bad effects arising from future global warming
C. it is believed by most people
D. it mainly targets at developing countries
34. According to Kathleen Sebelius ________.
A.sometimes it takes years to see the bad effects caused by consuming fossil fuels
B.without greenhouse gas emissions, people would not die of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases
C.the main reason why people get sick is that they rely on fossil fuels
D.death from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are closely related to greenhouse gas emissions
35. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. London and Delhi have already benefited from reducing greenhouse gas emissions
B. switching to low-polluting cars would save 160 lives in London every year
C. walking and biking instead of driving will reduce the chance of heart disease
D. attacking health problems and dealing with climate change are contradictory

What are the things that scare you: snakes, spiders or fierce tigers Or maybe you have a fear of heights or visiting the dentist. There are many different complex phobias some people suffer from, such as agoraphobia-caused by being away from home, and iatrophobia-fear of doctors.______39_____Therapy (心理治疗) is one choice, where you gradually get used to whatever it is you fear. Lauren Rosenburg says she likes to work with people to clear their bad memory and help them breathe. Dear David,
I'm happy to hear of you. You ask me in your letter whether you could smoke. To be honestly, I don't think you should try to start to smoke. The reason are as follows. Firstly, smoking is not only bad for themselves, but also does harm to the people around us. Secondly, smoking can cause a lot of diseases, such as coughing and lung cancer, that is deadly. Once you will get addicted to smoking, you will find it difficult to get rid of it. Besides, it will cost you a lot of money. But I hope you will never start it. You can lead positive life through taking exercise, reading, listening to music and so on. I hope my advice is of help to you.
I am looking forward to get your reply soon.
Best wishes!

Li Hua

Living in the city has both advantages and disadvantages. It is often easier to find jobs. There are always many choices of public transport. Besides, there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. You can eat at good restaurants, visit museums, go to cinemas and go to parks whenever you want to relax.
However, living in the city is often very expensive. You must find a well paid job, otherwise, you will not be able to afford the things you will do. What’s more, the city is always crowded, noisy and polluted. It is very difficult to find a good place where people can enjoy peace and fresh air as in the countryside.
