One of Britain' s most outstanding scientists says the growth in the use of electronic tablets and
smart phones is causing people to spend so much time indoors that they need to take regular vitamin D
supplements to make up for the lack of sunlight they receive naturally.
Geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow. “I
never thought I would be a person who would take vitamin supplements;I always thought it was
absolute nonsense. But now I take vitamin D every day. Today, because I knew the sun wasn't going to
shine, I took an extra one,” he said.
Exposure to the sun is the major source of vitamin D. However, people are spending less and less
time outdoors in many areas. The problem is particularly serious in Scotland. "The Scots are the whitest
people in the world because their entire body systems are crying out for vitamin D," he said, adding that
life expectancy in Scotland is two years shorter than in England or Wales. Multiple sclerosis (多发性
硬化症), a medical condition which is often seen in northern Europe, is also higher in Scotland than in
England.
Vitamin D helps with the absorption of Ca, which helps keep bones strong. And Jones said the fact
that rickets (佝偻病) was making a comeback in Britain after nearly 50 years was another sign of how
changing behavior patterns were bringing physical harm.
Jones admitted that concerns over the damaging effects on skin of long-time exposure to the sun
were reasonable, but said sunlight was healthy and necessary for the human body, and could help in
lowering blood pressure. "If you lie on the beach for an hour, you will drop your blood pressure by
about 10 points, because it relaxes your blood vessels (血管). So, get out in the sun while we still can,"
he said.
24. How are people affected by the rise of technology according to the text
A. They are more sensitive to sunlight
B. They take more vitamin D supplements.
C. They get less vitamin D than before.
D. They become addicted to electronic games.
25. What’s Jones’ attitude towards taking vitamin D supplements now
A. Skeptical. B. Cautious.
C. Worried. D. Supportive.
26. Why are the Scots the whitest people in the world
A. Because they are in great need of sunlight.
B. Because their blood pressure is very low.
C. Because they enjoy a short period of sunshine.
D. Because they are easy to get multiple sclerosis.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Get out and gain more Vitamin D B. Keep away from tablets and phones
C. Pay attention to the importance of sunlight D. Take vitamin D supplements to keep healthy

What is talent Are you born with it Or does it seem to develop over time Before I start I'd like
to say that one thing everyone agrees on is that the most skilled musicians have worked hard to get there.
While it's true that a few of us had enough “talent” to avoid extra practice to do just as well as
those who did, those who worked hard easily beat us. It is, in fact, very likely that if some of us “talented
ones” had actually been practicing and improving our skill, we would have achieved a whole different
level.
Another aspect of talent seems to be heart and passion. The people I see who are the most talented
musicians are crazy about music. They eat, breathe, and live music and they make an extraordinary
effort to make it part of their lives. As Remus Badea said, desire for the musician-to-be is significant
for them to be successful. This desire is easily found in those considered to be talented. When you want
and love something so bad, it drives you and your entire character can be shaped around it. Such
determined passion seems to produce incredible skill and talent.
The third aspect of talent is having talent around you. When surrounded by talented musicians, it
only seems natural that you start to catch up to their level. Take a look at almost any group of musicians
in history. The more talented people in the group, the more talented the group is as a whole. A great
example of this is the relationship between audio producer and artist. The artist turns up to the studio
with their song, and as they work through recording it, the audio producer will often suggest various
changes to the song to make it better.
28.What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A.Pride goes before a fall. B. It's never too old to learn.
C.Practice contributes to talent. D.Talent determines achievements.
29. What is the key to success according to Remus Badea
A.Passion. B.Character. C.Skill. D.Talent.
30.Why is the example mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To introduce what real talents are. B.To show the benefits of being with talents.
C. To prove talents need team spirit. D.To explain how a song is composed.
31.What might the author probably agree with
A. Music has no limits. B.Musicians are born with talent.
C.Musicians are created, not born. D. Music favors the talented.

Humans have favoured red apples for generations, but rising temperatures could mean the end of
a rosy red apple.
The ancestors of the modern apple were wild trees growing in what is now Kazakhstan. Today,
wild apple trees still grow there, perfuming the air with fallen fruit and feeding the bears that move
slowly through the forest, although the wild apples' numbers have become smaller by 90% in the last
50 years due to human development and their future is uncertain.
Apple colour arises from the expression level of certain genes in the skin, scientists have found.
Interestingly, colour also depends on temperature. To get an apple that's fully red, temperatures must
stay cool, David Change, an expert at Plant and Food Research in New Zealand, explains. As
temperatures warm, he suggests, it could become more difficult for apples to turn red.
Colour probably didn't win other features of an apple when growers were evaluating a new tree,
however. Instead, they focused on the taste and use for the apple: some are good for cider, some for
pies, some for sauce, and some for eating. It didn't much matter exactly what the fruit looked like and
whether it looked the same from tree to tree, because farmers were growing fruit for themselves and
for their local market, and function mattered more than looks.
Bunker says that all changed about a hundred years ago. The redder apples might not be better
than the yellower ones—in fact they might be worse---but, "red sells; that's the problem”.
"It happens to every single apple on the market," says Bedford. "That's just the nature of our
desire to have apples the way we want them to look...ever since man has been making choices they've
been making them redder and redder. "
32. What's the main idea of the passage
A. Humans have been preferring red apples.
B. Rising temperatures make apples no longer red.
C. The ancestors of modern apple still exist.
D. Growers pay less attention to change the colour of apples.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A. Scientists have found ways to change the colour of apples.
B. Apples will become red in winter because of the low temperature.
C. Apple colour is greatly influenced by temperature.
D. The higher the temperature is , the redder apples will be.
高一英语 12 月月考第 6 页,共 10 页
34. Which of the following statements will NOT win the favor of growers
A. The colour of the apple. B. The taste of the apple.
C. The use of the apple. D. The function of the apple.
35. What does Bedford's words mean
A. Every single apple on the market looks nice.
B. We humans desire to change the appearance of apples.
C. Humans have been choosing various apples.
D. Humans in fact prefer the apples which look redder.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you. We all need
some normal stress in our lives, after all. 36 So challenge the following limits:
Figure out what you’re scared of and do it continuously.
If you’re a salesman, and you’re scared of talking to people personally or over the phone, now,
instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone
and make a call. 37 But don’t stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eyes
and say, “Go on, I’m not scared!”
38
Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while
performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Apart from helping you
challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.
Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.
39 A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise
can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.
Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.
Don’t just limit yourself to your fellow travelers-try to connect with the service staff. You never
know what kind of people they’re going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book
your class. 40
A. You should do it continuously.
B. Someone may hang up on you.
C. You don’t need to go to the gym.
D. Running in the gym may be a better choice.
E. Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself.
F. Take a class for a hobby you’ve been wanting to develop.
G You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的
词数应为 150 左右。
Algebra (代数) was my last class of the day. After the class, Mrs. Sharpnack asked me to stay to
discuss my midterm math exam, which I had failed. Although I did well in language and many other
subjects, I wouldn’t be on the honor roll (光荣榜) that term if I couldn’t soon make big progress in
math. In just a few weeks, the names of the honor roll students would be read during the class. I was
so sad.
Seeing my sadness, Mrs. Sharpnack said, “Do you want me to spare some time to help with your
math I think you can make big and quick progress.” But I just wanted to go home and never think
about algebra again. “No, thanks,” I said. And I explained, “Unlike other students in my class, I am
just not good at this kind of math. And no amount of studying will change that.”
I almost cried when I talked about it. Mrs. Sharpnack comforted me, saying, “If we work
together, I believe you can change it.” For a moment, I wondered if she would be right. “What time
does your bus come ” she asked. I had 30 minutes left before my bus came, and I told her so. She
asked if I would like to use that time to go over the math problems I had met. Encouraged by her, I
answered. “I guess so.”
We started right then and made a plan to meet each day for two weeks, after which Mrs.
Sharpnack would give me a test to check my progress. After Mrs. Sharpnack helped me go over a few
problems that day, it was time for my bus to come. I waved her goodbye. In the following days, I
continued staying with Mrs. Sharpnack after class. She went over each problem, carefully explaining
the solutions.
Sometimes I still couldn’t understand what she had said. She stayed calm, though, and would
think of a different way to explain the answer. The day to take the test came quickly.

Hello everyone. My favorite sport is swimming and here are my reasons.
First, it's an affordable sport. Even though you have to buy an admission ticket, it isn't pricey though. Second, swimming is beneficial to your heart and lungs. In addition to its physical benefits, swimming is also an effective way to relax. Spending hours in the pool in hot summer is always my favorite pastime.
In conclusion, as a very good workout, swimming can give you peace of mind to continue with your day.
读后续写
Paragraph 1: Mrs. Sharpnack handed out test papers. When I started working, I was nervous. Looking at the test paper, I found the questions were hard and wanted to give up. But then, I remembered how hard we had worked together and how many times Mrs. Sharpnack had said I could make progress. So I kept calm and focused all my attention on the questions, trying to refresh my memory about the examples Mrs. Sharpnack had used. Two hours later, I finished the test and handed the paper back to her.
Paragraph 2: The next morning, Mrs. Sharpnack came in with graded papers. She stood in front of the class and read names on the honor roll. She looked at me with encouragement while reading my name. She smiled with great satisfaction as she looked at me. With surprise on one hand and happiness on the other, tears welled up in my eyes. Things were different after that. I showed an interest in algebra and gradually became quite good at it. I was so thankful to her, who improved not only my study but
also my confidence.
