“You have two ears and one mouth. Remember to listen more and speak less.” That was the advice I 1 from a
communication expert before, which got me thinking about listening. It’s not 2 that most of us are good at. Even those
of us who write for a living and are supposed to 3 how to do an interview and listen, often get it wrong and miss the
rule: “Don’t interrupt or try to 4 other people’s sentences.” and the rule: “Focus fully on the person speaking
5 focusing on your next comment.”
I found this out recently after following that communication expert’s 6 . I was part of a group lobbying(游说)
politicians about the importance of old buildings and main streets. One gentleman 7 a very large district made up of
small towns complained that the main street was too 8 and there wasn’t enough parking and there was no 9 to
widen the roads, which is exactly what our organization 10 for. We want walkable streets, not parking spaces. Instead
of arguing the point, I just 11 up for a change and let him talk. Before our time was up he was 12 how his son as
a carpenter was restoring a church, and how 13 building preservation was to him and his family. Had I not 14
practiced listening, we might have left his office earlier.
It has taken me a very long time to learn how to 15 . I might have been more 16 had I listened more. Now
that I write and teach, I have 17 often about how important hearing is to our connection with others, and what a(n)
18 my hearing has made in my life. 19 , hearing is different from listening, and, interestingly, there isn’t any
hardware that can help you listen; you just have to sit down, shut up and 20 it.

Every year, families across the U.S. and the U.K. hang up little pickled cucumber ornament(装饰品) to decorate their
Christmas trees. The practice is 1 by many English-speaking families, and is thought to be brought over from 2 .
The tradition involves hiding the pickle ornament among the branches, and 3 the child who finds it with the chance
to open gifts first. It’s also believed that the person will get good 4 for the new year.
The origin of the 5 , however, is a bit confusing. In fact, it doesn’t seem to have actually 6 in Germany at all,
since most Germans don’t practice it. In 2016, a survey conducted among 2,057 Germans found that 91 percent had never
even heard of it.
Another 7 is that the tradition of 8 a pickle didn’t actually start in Germany, but with a German immigrant in
the U.S. The 9 goes that a German man named John Lower 10 to the U.S. and became ill when he was in prison
during the Civil War. He 11 a guard to give him a pickled cucumber as a last meal, but he 12 surviving. After being
13 , he honored that pickle by starting his own 14 tradition of hiding a pickle in his Christmas tree for the kids —
saying 15 found it would have the same good 16 he had.
Of course, that story is also 17 , and could just be a tale coming out from nowhere to explain the pickles lateron.
According to Wide Open Country, the whole pickle game was most 18 a marketing trick to sell German glass ornaments
to Americans.
It was said to be 19 by F. W. Woolworth when the store began importing the ornaments in 1880. Each one would
come with a card telling the story of the tradition.
Whether the tradition is real or manufactured, pickle ornaments have become 20 everywhere.
