If you’re like me and can speak only English, travelling around Europe makes you feel pretty dumb. I find almost every person there is fluent in at least two languages. I suppose it’s necessary when so many different countries, each with its own language, have to communicate so closely with one another.
But the level of linguistic ability there still amazes me. A shopkeeper in Venice the other day was talking to me in English, while at the same time in French and Italian with two other shoppers. I was curious. “How many languages do you speak ” I asked. She thought a bit, saying “Italian, Japanese, French, Spanish and German. But I don’t speak English well.”
That’s why I feel stupid. Because it seems a bit rich to walk into someone else’s country, offer up a few poor attempts at the local language and from then on expect everyone to speak to you in your mother language. I was in Barcelona, when a Portuguese (葡萄牙的) waiter complained to us about the arrogance of the Spanish who, according to him, wouldn’t bother to learn Portuguese before they came to his country. That doesn’t sound like me at all.
But how annoying is it when you think you’re speaking well and the locals cut you off with their perfect English Ted’s much braver than I am at giving new languages a go. And wherever he fails, he rolls with either Spanish or English with a different accent.
It’s amazing how much you take language for granted until you can’t understand it any more. How can you properly learn about a culture without speaking its language You’re forever left standing in the cold looking into a window of delights just out of your grasp.
24. What can we conclude from the passage
A. Why we need to learn more languages.
B. How we can speak French in a short time.
C. What we should do while travelling abroad.
D. Where we should go if we speak English.
25. The author felt much surprised because ______________.
A. he found so many shoppers in the shop
B. he could talk with others with fluent French
C. the shop owner could speak a few languages
D. the shop owner treated other customers kindly
26. How many languages does the shop owner speak
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
27. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4
A. Ted can speak more than one language. B. Ted tries to speak with a different accent.
C. Ted speaks with a South African accent. D. Ted is good at making fun of others.

An exhibition of Song Buyun’s works is now running at the museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition will run through Feb 27.
These days, a long-awaited snowfall in Beijing easily creates a fanfare (轰动) online. One needn’t go outside to feel people’s excitement at a blanket of snow, as a glimpse of the photos and videos uploaded on social media will be enough.
Seventy years ago, however, while snow was common in Beijing, cameras were seldom to be seen; few were able to record the scenery of this historical city. One of the few was Song Buyun, the late oil painter and water-colorist who walked the streets and recorded the beauty of Beijing’s centuries-old architecture.
Cultural landmarks frozen in time are displayed in Song’s Beijing landscape series, picturing the peaceful atmosphere of the city’s historical spots over the course of a year, such as Tiantan. He documented people visiting the Palace Museum, swimming in lakes and clearing snow off the streets.
Dying in 1992, Song didn’t have a chance to show this body of work during his lifetime. It was eight years later that these paintings were made public for the first time at an exhibition held in his memory.
“Song’s paintings show the harmony between architecture and its surroundings,” says Fan Di’an, dean of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. “The colors are vivid and arranged tastefully to give a refreshing look to these old bining skills of Chinese and Western art, his works preserve the varied landscape of a city, and under his brushwork, Song injected rich emotions, allowing his work to stand the test of time.”
28. What can we know about Song’s works in the exhibition
A. They focus on Beijing’s cultural landmarks.
B. They were made with the help of cameras.
C. They show people’s hard life in Beijing decades ago.
D. They have drawn wide attention and good comments online.
29. When did the public first see the body of Song’s Beijing landscape series
A. In 1951. B. In 1992. C. In 2000. D. In 2020.
30. What makes Song’s works last long
A. The colors Song used were very special.
B. Some architecture and surroundings don’t exist.
C. Song’s skills and emotion make the works valuable.
D. They are the only way to record the historic scenery.
31. What’s the best title of this text
A. Song Buyun: a great colour master who painted architecture
B. Frozen in time: an old Beijing in Song Buyun’s exhibition
C. A symphony of colors: an exhibition giving you a feast of eyes
D. Landmarks in Beijing: the harmony architecture and culture
D
This year researchers expect the world to post 1.35 trillion photographs, or about 3.7 billion per day. All those pixels (像素) take up a lot of room if they are stored on personal computers or s phones, which is one reason why many people store their images in the cloud. But unlike a hard on drive which can be encrypted (加密) to protect its data, cloud storage users have to trust that a tech platform will keep their private pictures safe. Now a team of Columbia University computer scientists has developed a tool to encrypt images stored on many popular cloud services while allowing authorized users to browse and display their photographs as usual.
Malicious (恶意的) attempts to access or leak cloud-based photographs can expose personal information. In November 2019, for example, a bug in the popular photograph storage app Google Photos mistakenly shared some users’ private videos with strangers. Security experts also worry about employees at cloud storage companies on purpose accessing users’ images.
So the Columbia researchers came up with a system called Easy Secure Photos (ESP), which they presented at a recent conference. “We wanted to see if we could make it possible to encrypt data while using existing services,” says computer scientist Jason Nieh, one of the developers of ESP. “Everyone wants to stay with Google Photos and not have to register on a new encrypted-image cloud storage service.”
To overcome this problem, they created a tool that preserves blocks of pixels but moves them around to effectively hide the photograph. First, ESP’s algorithm (算法) divides a photograph into three separate files, each one containing the image’s red, green or blue color data. Then the system hides the pixel blocks around among these three files (allowing a block from the red file, for instance, to hide out in the green or blue ones). But the program does nothing within the pixel blocks, where all the image processing happens. As a result, the files remain unchanged images but end up looking like grainy (粗糙的) black-and-white ones to anyone who accesses them without the decryption (解密) key.
32.What’s probably the main purpose for people to store images in the cloud
A. To save storage room. B. To make photos beautiful.
C. To try a new storage way. D. To keep their privacy safe.
33.Why might employees in cloud storage companies be distrusted by experts
A. They sell users’ passwords. B. They have invented new tools.
C. They often let out personal information. D. They may steal a glance at users’ images.
34.What’s the advantage of ESP
A. It can provide clear images. B. It can decrease the upload time.
C. It can classify images automatically. D. It can encrypt data on the original platform.
35.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. Method of decryption. B. Image-processing technique.
C. Separate files of images. D. Data analysis of colors.
