As we all know, learning a foreign language well is very important for us. Here is some advice to help you learn a foreign language.
◆Spend the time
The more time you spend, the faster you’ll learn the language. This doesn’t mean sitting in class looking out of the window, nor listening to other students who don’t speak well, nor getting explanations in your own language about how the language works. This means spending time on things that are connected to the language you’re learning.
◆Listen and read every day
Listen to read things that you like, things that you can mostly understand, or even partly understand. If you keep listening and reading, you’ll get used to the language. One hour of listening or reading is more effective than many hours of class time.
◆Pay attention to words and phrases
Remember words as many as you can, because you’ll need lots of them. Start to notice words and how they come together as phrases. Learn these words and phrases through your listening and reading. Read online and use online dictionaries. Step by step you’ll be able to use them.
◆Be responsible for your own learning
Don’t wait for someone else to show you the language or to tell you what to do. Discover the language by yourself, like a child growing up.
◆Relax and enjoy yourself
Don’t worry about what you can’t remember, or can’t yet understand, or can’t yet say. The language will become clearer in your brain step by step. So enjoy it.

There are three common questions about how to improve our English.
The first question is about real English. Some students say that they want to learn real English. But they don’t know what to do. Watching English films is a good way. When we are tired after studying for a long time, we can watch an English film to relax. While watching it, we can also learn real English at the same time.
The second question is about speaking. Most students feel too shy to talk with foreigners. “Where are you from ” “What do you think of China ” These are both good questions to start a conversation. Before we begin, take a deep breath and smile! Smiling always helps.
The third question is about vocabulary. We want to remember all the new words. The problem is that we write them down but forget them soon. Write eight or ten words on a piece of paper and put it in our bedroom. Try to remember them. Spell the words whenever we see them, and change them every day. There is another way, when you’re shopping, counting the English words or saying the English names for everything you see as much as possible.

Now think for a minute about it. If you change the word home in the definition(释义)to the word “sea”, would the definition fit SEASICK Does seasick mean SICK FOR SEA It means something quite different. Seasick means SICK BY THE MOVEMENT ON THE SEA.When you are homesick, the only place you want to be is at home. When you are seasick, the last place you want to be is at sea.
Have you ever heard of a person being heartsick Heartsick doesn’t mean that something is wrong with a person’s heart. People are heartsick when they are hurt deep inside and when they feel as if their hearts are broken.

When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do ” as an example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, once at a time, what is your translation(翻译) It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.
Languages do not just have different sounds. They are different in many ways. It’s important to master(掌握)the rules for word order(顺序)in the study of English, too. If the speakers put words in a wrong order, the listener can’t understand the speakers’ sentences easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes when the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.
“She only likes apples.” “Only she likes apples.”
“I’ve seen the film already.” “I have already seen the film.”
When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(精神实质)of the language and use it as the English speakers do.

English is a very interesting language. It has borrowed words from many other languages. Immigrants(移民者)coming into the United States have contributed many words to the language, which have kept their original pronunciation. “Coolie” and “kowtow” were taken from the Chinese language, “shampoo” from India, “blitz” from German.
Many students have studied English for years, some as many as eight. However, some students still have difficulty in speaking fluent English. Some know many words but are unable to discern them when native speakers use them. In our oral English classes we will focus on speaking and listening to native English speakers. For this reason, because we are trying to train your ears to hear English and your mouths to speak intelligible(可理解的)English, we will have a rule that ONLY ENGLISH will be spoken in our English classes. Anyone speaking Chinese in class will be required to pay a fine(罚款) in order to encourage the speaking and understanding of English. If teachers enter a classroom and discover that anyone is speaking Chinese, they will require everyone in the room to pay the fine. It is everyone’s job to follow the English—Only rule. It is for your benefit. It is because we want to accustom your ears to hearing English.
Other subjects may be learned only from books but the only way to learn a foreign language is to speak it! Students are often nervous about speaking in class at first but we hope to make the class fun, so you will forget your nervousness and learn to speak out. Enjoy your classes.

Try to Learn Phrases
Speaking English freely means being able to express your thoughts and feelings. Your aim is to speak English in full sentences, so why not learn it in full sentences You’ll find that English is more useful in your life if you study whole phrases, rather than just simple words.
▲__________
Studying English for an hour once a week isn’t usually enough to make any real progress. The best way to quickly improve your English is to spend at least a few minutes practicing every day.
Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes
Sometimes it can be difficult to put all those rules and words together into a simple sentence. Don’t let the fear of saying something wrong stop you from speaking. Even if you think you’re making a mistake, keep speaking anyway. Most of the time, people will understand what you’re trying to say. The more you speak, the easier it will be.

The spoken language is very important. Master speaking by continuing to practice. Living in a country where the language is spoken makes this easier, but you can use other methods. Join a club where people speak the language. Make friends with people who speak the language.
Speaking, of course, can’t go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. The sounds of the Chinese and English languages are not exactly the same. If you don’t listen carefully, you’ll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.
Well, what about writing Like speaking, it’s to exchange ideas. People generally use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing. The important thing is to make your idea clear in your head and then to write it in clear lively language.
Chinese students read far too slowly. If you read fast, you understand better. If you read too slowly, by the time you have reached the end of a page you have forgotten what the beginning is about. When you meet with new words, don’t look them up in the dictionary. Guess the meaning from the context. You may not guess quite correctly the first time, but as new words come up again and again in different contexts, their meaning will become clearer and clearer. If you look up every word, you’ll never finish a book.
Students of a foreign language need a particular knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they are studying. They should study these subjects in the foreign language, not only in translation. In this way one can kill two birds with one stone: learn a foreign language and get some knowledge of the foreign country at the same time.
