Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves Although it might sound a little far from you now, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.
Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a “telepresence” system(远程遥控系统)—allowing users to control household appliances(家用电器), take part in video meetings, and receive education, healthcare and government services. Around the city, escalators (自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be in the big system as well.
The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.
About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems.
“Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

On July 23rd, China successfully sent its first Mars probe by Long March-5 Y4 rocket into the scheduled orbit. 2020 is regarded as the year of Mars as three spaceships are on a 505-million-kilometer journey to Mars. China, the US and the UAE(阿联酋)have all sent their probes to the red planet.
Timing is everything. Every 26 months, the window of the opportunity opens. During that time, the Sun, the Earth and the Mars are in line, and the earth stays in the middle. The distance between Mars and the Earth can be the shortest. That means the journey will take six or seven months instead of the usual nine months. The window of opportunity began on July 15, 2020 and ended on August 15, 2020.
To make a soft landing on Mars has never been an easy job. Besides the long travel distance, scientists think one of the biggest challenges is the seven minutes of terror(恐怖七分钟). That is, the probe needs to reduce the speed from 20, 000 kilometers ever hour to zero in seven minutes to land on the Mars. The atmosphere(大气层)of Mars is very thin. It could not provide enough help for the landing. What’s worse, there are a lot of sandstorms on Mars, making the landing much more difficult.
Anyway, scientists are trying hard to solve the mystery of life on Mars: Is there, or was there ever, life on Mars

Have you ever seen a car without a driver It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near panies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there — they just need to see if they’re value for money, work out insurance(保险)issues, and run final tests to check they can run alongside human-driven cars on the road.
So how do they work The cars have sensors all around which can detect other cars and obstacles(障碍物)in the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking, so the car know how far it is from the outside of the road or other parked cars. Road signs are read by cameras and satellite navigation systems are used so the car knows how to get to your destination. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information it receives from the sensors and cameras and processes this to work out when to speed up, brake and go.
Sound like your idea of heaven Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching film or reading a book while ‘driving’ would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn’t have to worry about remembering directions to where you’re going. In addition, computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans. They would also drive more safely than people — they are not influenced by music or friends, they would obey the speed limit and they have quicker reaction times in case of an emergency.
However, there are many disadvantages of driverless puters would have difficulties making ethical(伦理学的)decisions: If a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or change the direction immediately and potentially kill the car’s passengers, which might cause more death. Moreover, I personally find driving fun — I’d miss never being behind the wheel myself. There would also be many legal decisions to be made — should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves Or would there need to be a responsible adult with a driving license in the car at all times
Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, saving money for everyone, many people would be put out of a job when driverless cars appear. Bus, taxi and train drivers as well as driving instructors would be made unnecessary.
I’m not convinced I’d want a driverless car, but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and common on our roads.

Every day, China imports (进口) different goods from countries across the globe. These imports also include solid waste, such as plastics, paper and metals. They mainly come from countries like the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan.
These goods will no longer be imported next year. China has already banned (禁止) all imports of solid waste starting from Jan 1, 2021, said the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE).
Why does China import this waste In 1980, China’s economy (经济) was gradually taking off because of the reform and opening-up policy. The country’s factories didn’t have enough raw materials at that time. Therefore, China began importing solid waste. After being processed(加工), it can be turned into materials that are used to make other products.
For years, China has been the world’s largest importer of solid waste, with about 45 million tons arriving each year. Countries that send this waste to China pay about $25 (163 yuan) to $50 per ton for recycling, China News Agency reported.
Although the waste has helped develop China’s economy, it has brought more risks than benefits. Waste that can’t be used is either burned or buried (填埋). The water used to wash the waste is allowed to flow into nearby rivers. This has polluted the air, soil and water, posing a risk to public health, China Daily reported.
China has made some efforts to ban waste since 2017. From 2017 to 2019, imports of solid waste fell by 68 percent, dropping from 42 million to 13 million tons, Xinhua reported.
What about China’s waste
China can produce enough raw materials to support its economy now. However, it is also producing a rapidly-increasing amount of waste.

Taking pictures of an empty plate is becoming popular in the canteens (食堂) at Shenzhen University (SZU), a report by Shenzhen Economic Daily showed.
According to the Daily, Tencent is now working with SZU to introduce AI technology to a campaign (运动) on WeChat to promote (促进) “clear your plate”. The campaign is to reduce food waste and encourage students to save food.
After finishing a meal, students can take photos of their plates and send them to the AI system. Once their photos are accepted, students can get a reward (奖励). Tencent’s AI Lab provides technological support for the campaign. It takes only 40 milliseconds (毫秒) for the system to check a photo.
A total of 20,000 students at SZU took part in the second phase (阶段) of the campaign on Monday and Tuesday. And the food waste has dropped greatly after the campaign was started.

Chinese space exploration(探索) made great achievements in 2020, with the most significant event being the Chang’e 5 mission(任务),China Daily reported.
The Chang’e 5 was China’s first sample(样本) return mission. It traveled in space for 23 days and brought back 1.7 kg of lunar(月球的) rock and soil samples to Earth. This was the world’s first lunar return mission since 1976 and made China the third country to complete a lunar return mission after the United States and the former Soviet Union.
The lunar samples have been sent to laboratories for research that will improve understanding of the state, temperature, and material content(物质含量)of the moon. Some of the samples will be put on display to encourage scientific interest. "This will greatly encourage people, especially young people, to study and explore the worlds beyond Earth, " Xiao Long, a planetary scientist said..
China also views the mission as part of mankind's exploration of the moon as a whole.
The Chang’e 5 landing site was very deliberately(审慎地) chosen. The Mons Rumker site, which had never been sampled before, is geologically younger than the sampling areas of the US and Soviet missions. Scientists believe the new samples could help to understand the moon’s volcanic(火山的) activity and evolution(演变).
China has promised to share its samples with scientists from other countries. Some foreign scientists have shown interest. Lunar exploration is for the benefit of international scientific research. Mankind will explore the moon together, as large exploration projects will require international cooperation in the future. China will play a leadership role in the international scientific community, China Daily noted

Named after the “quest for heavenly truth”, Tianwen 1, China’s first Mars probe(探测器), has given us impressive pictures of the red planet. The first high-resolution(高分辨率的)pictures of Mars taken by Tianwen 1 were made public by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) on March 4.
“These are the first close-up pictures of Mars’ surface taken by China,” said Bao Weimin, a scientist of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The pictures were taken at different distances from Mars. The two black-and-white pictures were taken by the high-resolution camera on Tianwen 1 when the probe was about 330-350 kilometers above the Martian surface. As for the color picture, it was taken by Tianwen 1’s medium-resolution(中分辨率的)camera when the probe was about 5,000 kilometers above the red planet. It shows Mars’ North Pole.
The high-resolution camera can take both color and panchromatic(全色的)pictures. Panchromatic pictures, which are black and white, are the clearest, having the largest amount of data for scientific study, said Liu Tongjie. The medium-resolution camera, can only produce lesser clear pictures. Scientists put the panchromatic and color pictures together to form a clear and beautiful color picture, Liu added.
Tianwen 1, the country’s first independent Mars task, was sent up on July 23, kicking off the nation’s planetary exploration program. The probe entered its preset orbit above Mars on Feb 24 and is looking for a landing site on the planet’s largest plain. The probe is expected to land on the red planet sometime between May and June.

You may forget your password or your ID, but you’ll never forget your face. Using your face as your ID is quick and convenient. You could take the subway or board a flight with just your face alone. This is how facial recognition (人脸识别) works. This technology has helped Taylor Swift identify stalkers (识别跟踪者) at her concerts. It has also been used to catch criminals.
In China, facial recognition systems have been used in many areas. In Zhengzhou, people can now get on the subway by using facial recognition technology. They just need to link the online payment system to the subway’s smartphone app. Students at Peking University can also pass through the school gate by scanning their face.
However, there are currently no laws to regulate (规范) the use and collection of facial information. So many people are worried about the collection and use of this information by governments and companies. “I feel uncomfortable with the use of facial information because I don’t know how the company is using my facial details or whether they will be leaked” Said Feng Yi, a tourism company worker. Information leakage is a problem because there is a long history of companies failing to protect users’ information. After all, you can change your bank card or password if your bank information is leaked, but can you change your face when your facial information is stolen
As facial recognition is used more widely in our daily lives-from college campuses and subways to street corners and smartphones, we must ask ourselves whether or not this new technology is worth the risk.
