Inventions make our life easier and more interesting than before. Let’s take a look at some of the interesting inventions.
Smart mug
It’s hard to keep coffee or tea warm, especially in winter. But this smart mug from US can help us. The mug is made of special materials. There is an app for the mug that allows people to set the mug to a certain temperature between 48℃ and 62℃. Then, the mug keeps your coffee or tea at that temperature for about an hour.
Social robot
Can robots talk to us like humans Jibo, a robot made in US, can talk to you. The robot has a big, round head and a big body with no eyes or mouth. It uses animated icons((动画图标)to show emotions(情感). It just seems like a real human. Right now, Jibo can only do some easy things, like taking photos or reading news to you. But he may learn to do new things in the future.
Fidget spinner
They are small plastic or metal toys with a ball in the middle. The toys can twirl around on your fingertip(指尖). Once they are spinning(旋转), you can put the toy anywhere as long as it is a flat(平的)surface, such as a ruler or even the nose of a pet dog. It’s very popular with young people around the world. Some people say that the little toy helps them relax.

Plastic is one of the biggest polluters in our environment. And Coca-Cola was named the world’s number one plastic polluter in 2020. The Coca-Cola company is finally taking action to deal with this growing problem.
Though plastic is very useful, it is also an “alien” material to Earth, because the soil cannot turn plastic back into CO and water. And this is not the only problem. When plastic finally does degrade(降解), thanks to the sun, it produces greenhouse gas emissions(排放物)and harmful chemicals into the environment, only making the climate(气候)even worse.
The Coca-Cola company is working with a Danish company to create 100% recyclable soda bottles instead of plastic ones.
Creating a paper bottle is challenging. The paper bottle must still follow the same safety standards as the plastic bottles. The carbonated liquid(碳酸液体)in the paper bottle needs to be tested in different environments. Moreover, the paper has to meet the needs of different shapes and sizes for different brands.
The first paper bottle will be tested in Hungary this summer. The bottle is made of a single piece of material instead of separate parts, which would make the bottle weaker. Because paper cannot come into direct contact with the drink, the bottle still includes a(recyclable)plastic inside and cap. However, how to make the paper cap is still unclear yet.
Even if the paper bottles are successful, it will be some time before companies use them instead of plastic that is cheap and easy-to-produce. However, Coca-Cola’s steps are still steps towards a brighter future.

A scientist named Charles had a strange idea. He wanted to invent a new kind of car which could go without a driver. It could also be used as a living room. That means you can go anywhere on your sofa in the car. You might say that it’s impossible. But Charles succeeded in making it in a factory and named it Tridika.
Tridika has no wheels and it starts working when it reaches the magnetic levitation tracks(磁悬浮轨道). It takes its energy from its tracks. And it works in the same ways as a magnetic train. It moves very fast. As everyone knows, cities are developing rapidly. There are more and more cars running on the road. So parking space is limited. Sometimes it’s hard to find a place to park(停车). Tridika can solve this problem easily because it needn’t park on the ground. Actually, it can park on the outside wall of the building with the help of an elevator system(电梯系统). In this way, much parking space can be saved. When Tridika parks itself in front of your apartment, you can get into your room directly. Of course, there must be a side door in the outside wall. Then Tridika becomes another living room. It’s really amazing, isn’t it

Have you ever heard of “a ball of energy” People often use it to describe very active children. But today we tell about invention called the soccket, that is a real soccer ball of energy. Julia Silverman explains that in fact the soccket is a portable generator(便携式发电机).
Julia Silverman and Jesscia Mattews developed the soccket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University.
There are mechanisms (装置) in a soccket. When you kick, hit or throw it, energy can be kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment. Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger(充电器)so that they can get energy from it. For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the soccket can provide enough electricity for an LED lamp for 3 hours, and the ball can serve about 24 hours’ electricity.
The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use, and most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other counties in Asia.
Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a really serious problem in some areas.
There’s an energy crisis in the world. One out of every five people in the world don’t have any electricity. And besides that, there are a lot of health problems because what people use instead of the electricity are harmful choices like kerosene(煤油) lamps, which produce a lot of smoke.
Julia Silverman says the soccket ball is one small solution(解决方法) to a big problem. Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman hope their soccket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world’s most popular sport and get some energy in return.

What is the most important invention of all the time Is it the written word that helps us to record information Is it the telephone that lets us talk to people from all over the world Is it the car that lets us travel at great speeds to meet others Umberto Eco, an Italian writer, thinks it is something quite different. He says the most important invention might be right in front of your eyes. He is talking about a simple pair of glasses.
Modern eye glasses were invented around 1000 years ago. They were more than just a convenient way to read. Before glasses were invented, writers, scientists or teachers who could not see properly had to memorize everything. After about ten years of poor eyesight, they could not remember well enough and could not work. Glasses meant that people could work in their old age. People who wanted to remember some information could write it down and read it. Stories are shared in many ways. They are described in books and magazines. They are read around the campfire at night. They are randomly distributed(随机分发)from stand-alone booths. But what else
To revive(复兴)literature in the end of fast news and smartphone addiction, Short Edition, a French publisher of short-form literature, has set up more than 30 story dispensers in the USA in the past years to deliver fiction at the push of a button at restaurants, universities and government offices.
Francis Ford Coppola, the film director and winemaker, liked the idea so much that he invested in his company and placed a dispenser at his Cafe Zoetrope in San Francisco. Last month public libraries in some other cities announced they would be sitting them up, too .There is one on the campus at Penn State. A few can be found in downtown West Palm Beach, Fla and Sbort Edition plans to announce more, including at the Los Angeles International Airport.
“Everything old is new again,” said Andrew Nurkin, the director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, which is one of the libraries that set up the dispensers. “We want people to be easily exposed to literature. We want to advance literacy among children and inspire their creativity.”
Here’s bow a dispenser works: It has three buttons on top indicating choices for stories that can be read in one minute, three minutes or five minutes. When a button is pushed, a short story is printed. The stories are free. They are chosen from a computer category of more than 100,000 original submissions by writers whose works have been evaluated by Short Edition’s judges, and transmitted over a mobile network. Offerings can be tailored to specific interests, like children’s fiction or romance. Short Edition gets stories for it category by holding writing contests.

Xiaofan went to a shop and bought a tape. Back home, he started to record what he wanted. After that, he took out a tool box and connected his tape player with the new tape to his alarm clock. A special alarm clock was born. At a certain time in the morning, the tape player would play soft music with a low and sweet voice of a young girl, “Wake up, please.” Five minutes later, the tape player would play again, and it might be loud music. At the same time, he could hear a recording of his parent, “Wake up at once, or you’ll be late!”
Several days later, Xiaofan got used to the sound of the recordings. After the recordings, he was still sleepy, and even fall asleep again. That was terrible! So he went to the library and borrowed plenty of books home to deal with his problem of getting up late.
He made it! With the help of what he had learned from the books, he put a mechanical(机械的)arm at the end of the bed. Now if Xiaofan still doesn’t get up at last, the arm in the bed will “beat” him, and even make him out of the bed.

A boy named James Watt sat quietly by the fire, watching the lid of the kettle move up and down. He wanted to find out why the steam in the kettle moved the lid. From that time he went on thinking and thinking. And when he became a man, he improved the steam engine (蒸汽机) so much that it could easily do the work of many horses.
James Ferguson was a poor boy. Once, seeing the inside of a watch, he wondered. “Why should I not make a watch ” But how could he get the materials to make the mainspring (钟表的主发条) He soon found he could make it with whalebone (鲸骨). The pencil is a very simple object. However, it took hundreds of people over centuries to what make it what it’s like today.
The story of the pencil starts with graphite(石墨). People cut it into small sticks and use them to write or draw. Around 1560, an Italian couple named Simonio and Lyndiana Bemacotti added wood holders to the graphite sticks. However, since the graphite is too soft, the pencils were easy to break. In 1795, in France, Nicolas-Jacques Conte worked out a method of mixing graphite powders with clay(黏土). In this way, people made strong pencil core(铅笔芯). To this day, the method is still used in making pencils.
It was Henry David Thoreau who came up with the grading scale(分级量表)for different hardnesses of pencils. It was graded one through four, and grade two is the proper hardness for general use. The softer the pencil is, the more graphite it has in it, and the darker the line is. The harder the pencil is, the more clay it has, and the lighter the line is. Nowadays, pencils marked 2B are usually used in exams to mark answers. Pencils marked HB are usually daily writing. People usually use pencils of different hardness and blackness to draw different parts of a picture.
When pencils were handmade, they were made round. Then an American Joseph Dixon developed machines to make pencils. Later people found out it was easier and less wasteful to make a pencil which has six sides.
There is a pencil for everyone and every pencil has a story. The Blackwing 602 is famous for being used by a lot of writers. And then, you have the Dixon pencil company. It’s what people think of when they think of a pencil and what they most probably will buy when their children are about to write.
In my opinion, there’s nothing that can be done to make the pencil better than it is.

Have you ever heard of the name Jacques Cousteau He was a famous marine(海洋的)scientist. During World War II, he invented the Aqua-Lung(水肺). The invention made it possible for him and his teammates to swim underwater. They were able to study the ocean more carefully than humans had ever done before.
Cousteau passed away in 1997. Now, new marine scientists has come of age. One of them is Cousteau’s grandson Fabien Cousteau. He grew up on his grandfather’s ships. It’s unsurprising that he became interested in the ocean at a young age.
Aquarius, built off the coast of Florida, is now the only underwater lab of the world. A lifelong and larger lab will allow scientists to better understand the ocean. Fabien Cousteau is now planning to build a kind of undersea international space station.
Cousteau’s lab will be named Proteus, after the god of oceans in Greek fairy tale. The lab is going to be set up 18 meters underwater in the Caribbean Sea. Plans for Proteus are for it to cover an area of 370 square meters. That would make it four times the size of any other past underwater lab in history. Proteus would be able to fill 12 people at a time for up to 30 days. There would be enough space for work, exercising and sleeping.
There will be problems with living inside of Proteus. For example, there needs to be UV light(紫外线). Without it, scientists living in Proteus will become ill. They won’t be able to grow food, either. Cousteau believes all problems will finally be solved.
Do you want to become a marine scientist If so, perhaps you will be working in Proteus someday!
